29.04.2022 Thanks to Catherine Stokes from The College of Law and Sophie Manera of Tang Law and the Migration Institute of Australia , for inviting me to speak about the S...tate Government’s achievements in family violence reform. It’s so important for all of us to challenge the attitudes that allow violence against women to occur in the first place. Thank you to the lawyers and service providers who attended, for their important work in supporting our most vulnerable women in navigating the legal system. We know there’s more work to be done and we continue to improve our justice system responses to ensure we are achieving the best outcomes for victim survivors, and crucially, that perpetrators are held to account. 20.04.2022 On 25 March, we sponsored the event "Support Available to Victims of Domestic Violence", which was well attended by over 40 guests in person and attracted great online audience. Sophie Manera, our Migration Law Partner, commonly sees clients who are not only victims of domestic violence, but also have limited English and support networks. She also finds that often lawyers in private practice are not aware of the support that the government, NFPs, and charities can provide. S...ophie initiated this event to bring together people who assist victims of domestic violence in various capacities, and as an opportunity for lawyers and anyone interested to learn about the community resources available to support their clients and those impacted by DV. This informative session featured presenters from 4 key organisations, delivering insights on different topics including financial literacy, government support, refuges and accommodation, and criminal injuries compensation; all of which play a vital role in the assistance of DV victims. Australian Red Cross, Starick, Your Toolkit, Department of Justice WA We were also honoured to have the Hon Simone McGurk MLA, Minister for Child Protection; Women's Interests; Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence; Community Services attend our event as the keynote speaker.
