25.01.2022 "I've always been a great believer that the more things you try, the more those experiences build your personal stock of resilience. You can draw on those experiences and challenges your entire life, and constantly learn from them." Whether advocating for students needing extra support in schools - including rural, Indigenous and refugee students, winning on the sporting field or serving the community, 2020 UNE Alumni Community Award Winner Peter Ireland believes it’s not onl...y important to ‘have a crack’ at everything, but also to give back. "If you're fortunate enough to have done well in life, it's good to send the elevator back down. I think it's incumbent upon us, otherwise we are not leaving or building a legacy." Read Peter's inspiring story below. #UNEAlumni

23.01.2022 As a poet, actor, primary and secondary school teacher, and author of plays and prose, UNE alumnus Ron Vickress’ life and career has been rich and compelling. And that’s before mentioning he'd also been an Australian Navy sailor who witnessed the signing of the peace treaty officially ending WWII, after years of service. "In those days you just shrugged off the painful things that happened; you had to get on with life," Ron says. "Now, little pieces appear in what I write."... After his discharge from the Navy, Ron married and started a family but "drifted" for seven years before enrolling in Sydney Teachers' College and commencing work as a primary and then secondary teacher. "I didn't discover it immediately, but through teaching I found what my forte was - theatre, English writing and drama," he says. Read Ron’s story at the link below.

23.01.2022 There is more than one way of being, thinking and learning about knowledge, and other gifts and talents that schools could be valuing. This is a conclusion of UNE PhD candidate and School of Education lecturer Genevieve Thraves, after looking at a case study of a Northern Territory boarding school, where almost one-third of students are from remote Indigenous communities but not one has been through its gifted and talented program in 10 years. Genevieve enlisted the guidanc...e of Yolngu elders, the school's teachers and educational consultant Miriam Dhurrkay to develop a culturally informed talent identification model that went far beyond the narrow western definition. "For Yolngu people, gifts, talents and talent development are deeply entwined with foundation law (Djalkirri Rom)," Genevieve says. "I realised that what we were determining was appropriate ‘talent development’ wasn't necessarily appropriate for Yolngu students," she says. "We were not leaning into their funds of knowledge and what cultural gifts they were bringing to school." Read more about Genevieve’s research at the link below. #NAIDOC2020 #ResearchUNE

15.01.2022 UNE School of Education’s A/Prof Susan Feez has always been fascinated by language and culture, today using this interest to encourage young adult Ezidi refugees in Armidale to aspire to a university education. There is a lot to love about learning another language and getting to know another culture, including in my case how much learning another language can teach you about your own, Susan says. UNE is one of only a few universities where specialist teacher education i...n EALD education is still offered, continuing a tradition begun at the Armidale College of Adult Education in the 1970s. When my colleagues and I heard that Ezidi refugees were being settled here, and that the young adults were feeling left behind without the opportunity for tertiary education, we said to each other, ‘well, we’re the experts in migrant education, what should we do?’ The program they designed in 2018, sponsored by the UNE Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP), orients young adults and secondary school students to university study, including aspects of campus life, academic English (in collaboration with the English Language Centre), study skills and setting career goals. To date, all participants have emerged from the program aspiring to undertake further education and to build professional careers, like nursing, so they can give back to the community that has been so welcoming, Susan says. 11.01.2022 It is wonderful to see the development of a student from the beginning to the end of their degree. Over a 31 year career at UNE, Sue Haydon has built a reputation for always putting the student first even while navigating the many changes and challenges in technology and systems over time. As a long-term member of UNE School of Education's Office for Professional Learning, Sue has always been known to make sure the experience of professional education placements in scho...ols is as smooth and enjoyable as possible - and has loved to see things come full circle. It has been lovely to see students who attended UNE now teaching in schools and to maintain regular contact. It is also great to hear them say, ‘I went to UNE so now I want to support them by supervising a student teacher on their placement’. She's even managed to "inadvertently play Cupid" for at least two students while placing them in schools! Read more about Sue's story at the link below.

09.01.2022 "Growing up my High School had a total of 180 kids. It's a very tight-knit community, every teacher knows every kid and are involved within the community," Ms Douglas said. "That's the kind of relationships I want to build with my students." With the help of a rural scholarship, Tegan Douglas, fourth year UNE Bachelor of Education in Secondary Mathematics student, is looking forward to finishing her studies and returning to western NSW as a trained educator to help other remote students.

02.01.2022 I remember one time being in a remote community ... and seeing a bunch of kids after school walking down the street putting on different voices, mimicking the language in the text they were studying," says UNE School of Education's Dr Helen Harper. The fact they were doing this for fun was really striking. It’s also exciting to see when kids move from learning to read to being able to write a story where they know what effect they want, and they know how to use words to a...chieve that effect. Alongside University of Adelaide's Dr Bronwyn Parker, Dr Harper has co-written a new teacher resource setting out an approach to literacy teaching for primary students to engage them in storytelling and encourage inclusivity in the classroom. The book, 'Teaching with Intent 2', has now been shortlisted for a 27th Educational Publishing Award. Read more at the link below.
