23.01.2022 GUT HEALTH AND IMMUNITY Given our current situation, I thought Id put together some information about how important gut health is for your immunity and mental health. I hope you find it helpful ... WHATS IN MY GUT? Did you know that 80% of your immunity is located in your gut? Your gut is made up of a diverse group of bacteria that live in your gastrointestinal tract known as your gut microbiome. It plays an important role in how we feel physically and mentally and integral in keeping your immune system healthy. As we know the brain and gut are connected, research suggests that an imbalance in your gut microbiome can impact the state of your physical and mental health too. WHAT CAN YOU DO? 3 tips to support your gut health and improve your immunity. 1) PROBIOTICS and PREBIOTICS To support your microbiome and overall health, it is important to add probiotics and prebiotic-rich foods to your diet to maintain a strong balance in favour of beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract. Probiotic foods help add diversity to your gut, while foods high in prebiotics help feed your good gut bacteria. Try adding some of the following foods to your daily diet: PROBIOTIC FOOD yogurt, sauerkraut, cottage cheese, kefir, kimchi miso, kombucha PREBIOTIC FOOD artichokes, leeks and onions, legumes, garlic cabbage, asparagus, oats 2) DIET Eat a diet that includes lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, seeds and nuts. They are packed with vitamins and minerals essential for good gut health. Vitamins A, B, C, and D vitamins are particularly essential to digestive health - Vitamin A - colourful fruits and vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, leafy greens and liver - Vitamin B - fish, poultry, meat also leafy greens - Vitamin C citrus fruits, berries, peppers, broccoli Avoid processed and sugary foods which can cause an imbalance in your gut microbiome, making you susceptible to getting sick. 3) VITAMIN D and EXCERCISE Vitamin D is also essential for good gut health and improving the immune system. The easiest way is through sun exposure. Why not exercise outside? Find a form of exercise that suits you. Go for a walk, run around the block and get some fresh air. During exercise the body produces pain killing chemicals called endorphins and enkephalins. These chemicals can produce a natural high therefore improving your mood and mental health too. These 3 tips will not only help you maintain a healthy gut microbiome which is important for immunity, but they will also contribute to keeping your mental well-being healthy too.

19.01.2022 Western medicine vs Natural medicine.... As a Naturopath I often get asked, do you ever take antibiotics? My answer is although its not my preference, sometimes YES! WHAT! a natural health practitioner taking antibiotics! I am not against western medicine at all. It holds such an important place in our medical system....as does natural medicine. They both have their place. ... I recently developed a bad sinus infection 24hrs before an international fight. I went straight to the doctor to get antibiotics. Why? Because I had a infection that needed immediate treatment and I didnt want it to get worse on the flight or lead to any serious complications. I also needed instant symptomatic relief! You see herbs take more time to take effect. Yes, I also did my steam bath, vaporiser in my room, lemon and honey tea, lots of rest, warm shower...you get my drift. So my point is this. I believe in preventative medicine. Nourishing foods, exercise, taking herbs when I need them, taking care of my mind, body and soul. But when I get sick and need to get well quickly (no one wants to be in pain) I look to western medicine to help me out. Its a quick fix. Natural medicine takes more time because its about finding the root cause and treating that, not just the symptoms. I have my probiotics with me which contain a strain called saccharomyces boulardii. This strain can help restore gut health after a course of antibiotics and can help to prevent travellers diarrhoea. Both forms of medicine should coexist. Thankfully they have in my case and Im feeling much better thanks to both modalities of medicine #westernmedicine #naturalmedicine #naturopathicmedicine #keepingitreal #naturopath #nutritionist

16.01.2022 This months newsletter will feature an article by Tania Gulliver Naturopath and Nutritionist. Sit down with a hot cuppa and settle in for an informative read. H...ere is a snippet to give you an idea. "Your gut is sensitive to emotion such as anger, happiness, stress and sadness. Emotions can trigger gastrointestinal symptoms in your gut which can disturb digestion and alter the gut microbiome. It is important to be in a parasympathetic, or rest and digest, state when you eat, so that you can produce the gastric acids which are essential to properly digest and absorb food. If you eat when you are stressed, you will not be able to absorb the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals which are essential to support a healthy body, brain and gut." I will be popping the complete article into your inbox on Monday the 7th of October. If you haven't joined the club yet, head to the link below. xx http://eepurl.com/dOGjdr
