25.01.2022 For all of our followers interested in living a more sustainable lifestyle, this is coming up in Sale.....

25.01.2022 Parks Victoria have made the decision that non-essential volunteer activities are to be cancelled for at least 4 weeks. Tarra-Bulga National Park will still be open for visitors to enjoy, but the Visitors Centre will be closed. Also our weeding activity planned for tomorrow has been cancelled.

23.01.2022 Very cool video showing the Balook area this year during peak snow. Well worth checking out for people wanting too see the amazing transformation that happens at Tarra-Bulga when it snows.

21.01.2022 Was going through an old photo album of my Grandparents and was excited to find that they had visited Bulga Park and the Tarra Valley many years ago. #tarrabulganationalpark #suspensionbridge

21.01.2022 This year we are switching to hold most of our on-ground activities on Sundays. The first one is coming up this Sunday morning (March 31st). We will be meeting at the Tarra Valley Carpark at 9.30am and then heading down to our project site a bit further down the road where we will spend a couple of hours hand weeding sycamore maple, ivy and tutsan. BYO, gloves etc but please let us know via [email protected] or phone 0488 035 314 if you intend to come along (in case any plans need to change on the day).

20.01.2022 Probably a sign of what a dry summer we experienced but we have added a new species to our list. The eastern grey kangaroo is not on the official species list for the park (this might be the first photographic record). Dry conditions at lower altitudes most likely resulted in it heading up this way in search of food.

20.01.2022 Found another cool old photo in my Grandma's photo album. Fairly certain this is the Tarra Valley probably late 1940's or early 1950's?

17.01.2022 Remote camera check done today. Delighted to find that this curious apex predator had been doing some investigating down at ground level. #WedgeTailedEagle

15.01.2022 Giant Mountain Ash trees, beautiful fern gullies and ancient myrtle beeches through this area nestled away in dense valleys of South East Gippsland, Australia. ...These mythical myrtle are scattered throughout this area and once stood well before gum trees in Australia. Today they show there presence in a very spooky way. Pentax K1 & 15-30 lens. Kase CPL Filter. Sirui W2004 Tripod.

14.01.2022 Not the sort of deer that you want appearing on Christmas Eve. This is the 2nd time we have located a deer on our remote cameras. The first time at this site. Deer pose a serious threat to our rainforest gullies. Along with the long established foxes and feral cats we have also in recent times detected feral pigs on our cameras. Monitoring these species via remote camera is a great way of highlighting the necessity of putting in control programs for these threats to the ecology of our treasured places.

14.01.2022 Headed up to the Tarra Valley last night. Hoping to photograph a patch of ghost fungi I saw there the weekend before. Alas, the fungi was gone, possibly washed away in last weeks rain. While I was disappointed not to be able to get some cool long exposure shots of some glowing fungi, I did find plenty of stuff to photograph.

14.01.2022 Our photo of some Pixies Parasols is attracting some interest.

13.01.2022 Cyathea falls today. Charged up with some fresh rainfall.

13.01.2022 iNaturalist is a great app/site to log all your fungi sightings. As well as pretty much any other type of living thing you can mention. Anything that is uploaded within the park boundary is automatically added to the Tarra-Bulga National Park project.

13.01.2022 Here is our report on our 2019 Lyrebird Survey. http://friendsoftarrabulga.org.au//2019-lyrebird-survey-r/

12.01.2022 Another interesting observation from our remote camera. This one shows 2 Lyrebirds having an encounter with a Brown Goshawk.

12.01.2022 A bit of fun today after some overnight snow.

11.01.2022 Tarra Valley today looking great after all the rain.

11.01.2022 Thanks to Parks Victoria acknowledging our 25th anniversary this year. Also a very special thanks to anyone who has volunteered with us in the past 25 years.

09.01.2022 After a long shutdown, we are going to re-open the Visitors Centre. Now would be a great time for new people to sign up as volunteers as we have a busy summer holidays fast approaching. For more information and to register your interest please contact us via this page or phone our roster co-ordinator Jane on 5196 6182.

09.01.2022 Wombat Wednesday

08.01.2022 It was either drizzling or raining all day today and only nine visitors came in to the visitors centre. Although it was quiet, rainy days are often the best time to be up in Tarra-Bulga National Park. The lush green colour of the vegetation is more obvious and combines magically with the grey mist.

07.01.2022 Normally at this time of year it would be deserted around here. This is at 3.15pm. Car parking overflowing on to Grand Ridge Rd earlier in the day. Even on weekdays the car park has been almost full.

07.01.2022 Many thanks to Baiba Mellups, a recent vistor to the park for forwarding us this beautiful photo and description. One of the many fungal prettiest from Tarra Bulga National Park, with a Christmas in July feel in late June. Ombrophila sp. (with a touch of red Nectria sp.).... Story and photo courtesy of Baiba Mellups.

07.01.2022 Heading out to this site again tomorrow morning to remove some more wire tree-guards. If anyone is interested in coming along to volunteer the meeting point is at the Visitors Centre Car Park at 9.30am. For more details phone: 0488 035 314 or email [email protected]

06.01.2022 To celebrate our 25th anniversary, the Friends of Tarra-Bulga National Park are planning to hold a special function at the Ship Inn in Yarram, on November the 23rd. We are hoping that lots of current and former volunteers come along. For details about the upcoming anniversary event phone 0488 035 314 or email [email protected]

06.01.2022 It's great to see progress on some of our project sites. We planted out this site in 2015. Today we were back removing some of the tree guards. Progress is looking great...

05.01.2022 Want to know more about the mosses and liverworts that grow in Tarra-Bulga? Check out this fantastically preserved collection from the 1950's.

04.01.2022 Same goes for Tarra-Bulga.

03.01.2022 Very sad news, Vale Pam Pattison, Pam, was a key member of our group for 25 years. She was a lady of action and loved to interact with people. ... As well as being our long term Treasurer, she was the go to person for organising and cooking barbeques; catering for the Lyrebird Survey and many other jobs. For many years she has been responsible for managing our Visitors Centre Roster and making sure there is a volunteer there to keep the doors open for the benefit of the public. In addition to our group, Pam was a passionate member of other community groups in the district. Pam will be sorely missed. She is pictured here being presented with her Gold award for completing over 100 days service in the Visitors Centre.

03.01.2022 Lyrebirds are helping to reduce the amount of leaf litter, which will helps to supress fires. A very important role to keep fire out of our magnificent wet forest and cool temperate rainforest at Tarra-Bulga.

01.01.2022 Thank you to the Latrobe Valley Express for reporting on our recent Lyrebird Survey.
