24.01.2022 The doubling of Newstart at the start of the pandemic came as a huge relief. Were calling on the Federal Government to extend the existing Coronavirus Supplement to prevent income cuts in two weeks and move quickly to legislate a permanent, adequate JobSeeker rate that means people can cover the basics. Dr Cassandra Goldie, CEO, Australian Council of Social Service

24.01.2022 "The reality is that people on JobSeeker are supporting our fragile economy to rebuild by spending on essentials like food, rent, medical care and utility bills. Dr Cassandra Goldie, CEO, Australian Council of Social Service

22.01.2022 TasCOSS CEO Adrienne Picone speaks to Leon Compton ABC (ABC Hobart) about the importance of maintaining the current rate of JobSeeker which has enabled out of work Tasmanians many for the first time to afford the basics and live with dignity. 35,000 Tasmanians who are presently out of work will be forced into poverty by the Federal Governments choice to reduce the rate of JobSeeker at the end of September.

21.01.2022 "There are a lot of things that are not in our control in this pandemic but one thing that the government does have control over is ensuring that everyone has enough to cover the basics of life, including a safe place to live." Dr Cassandra Goldie, CEO, Australian Council of Social Service

19.01.2022 "Maintaining Australias pandemic-boosted welfare payments wont stop job seekers from taking up work during the COVID-19 recession, Deloitte says. Instead, cutting the $550-a-fortnight Coronavirus Supplement would harm the economic recovery and decrease both GDP and employment across Australia, the firm said in a new report."

19.01.2022 3/4 OF PEOPLE ON JOBSEEKER EXTREMELY WORRIED ABOUT $300 A FORTNIGHT CUT Today we released the results of our survey of over 600 people on JobSeeker about how ...they feel about the September 25 JobSeeker cut. People told us that the $300 cut will have a substantial impact on their ability to cover the cost of housing, bills, medicine, food, and other essentials. More than half of people told us that they will definitely have to skip meals, and buy less fresh food when JobSeeker is cut in 2 weeks. People on JobSeeker need a permanent, adequate income, not a huge cut. The Government needs to listen to the evidence, to the people on JobSeeker, and act. Read the full report here: tinyurl.com/y2xmlyhh Contact your local Member of Parliament to tell them here how devastating this cut will be for peoples health and finances: tinyurl.com/y3tr2d6w And tell the Prime Minister and Treasurer what you think of the JobSeeker cut. Call the Prime Ministers office on 02 6277 7700 and the Treasurers office on 02 6277 7340. www.raisetherate.org.au

16.01.2022 "Were hearing firsthand that young people are concerned about their future and lack of secure employment and training opportunities post-COVID-19. "We need to ensure we listen to voices of young people as we rebuild systems... COIVID-19 has shown us, without question, that an economy that relies on casual and precarious positions is not robust. In order to rebuild a stronger and more resilient Tasmania, we must invest in a wide range of industries, particularly those that provide more reliable, secure working arrangements." Simone Zell, Chair, Youth Network of Tasmania

16.01.2022 Im a single dad of two. Ive got a six year old and a two year old. I get a little bit of work and when I dont get enough Im topped up by Centrelink. Its a... bit of a juggle most of the time but I generally have been lucky that at times when Im really struggling Ill suddenly get an influx of work and start catching up, said Stephen, a furniture deliverer in SA. Stephen needs to use his personal phone for work, but has to pay for it himself. A mobile phone isnt a convenience, its a necessity. -- Funded by ACCAN and written by SACOSS in conjunction with Australian Council of Social Service, Tasmanian Council of Social Service Inc and ACTCOSS - ACT Council of Social Service Inc., the Connectivity Costs II reports that over half of waged poor households (those whose main source of household income is wages and salaries but they are living below the poverty line) rate #telecommunications expenses as one of the biggest factors in their household budget. Half of the households with smart phones and 46% with NBN or other home broadband that were surveyed for this report, told us they had trouble paying for the ongoing costs of these necessary utilities. Against a backdrop of increasing usage of telecommunications (both devices and data) and the increased necessity of being online to access information and services to participate in society, the affordability of telecommunications is an ongoing concern.

15.01.2022 The doubling of Newstart [now JobSeeker] at the start of the pandemic came as a huge relief. After 26 years without a real increase to Newstart, people without paid work were finally able to afford the basics. But they now face a deeply uncertain future, with the prospect of these devastating cuts to their already tight budgets." Dr Cassandra Goldie, CEO, Australian Council of Social Service

14.01.2022 What we hear from Tasmanians is that actually for the first time they dont have to make a decision about whether they heat their house or whether they buy food. For the first time they can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, they can eat three meals a day and their kids can take a healthy school lunch." Adrienne Picone, CEO, TasCOSS

06.01.2022 "Providing people without paid work with enough to get by is highly effective economic stimulus, as they have little choice but to spend straight away on essentials. "People on higher incomes have the option of saving, which many are doing right now given the uncertainty of the pandemic. This is why other measures, such as income tax cuts, would not be as effective in getting us out of this recession." Nicki Hutley, Partner, Deloitte

"Solutions include improving access to reliable, affordable transport that can get job seekers to services, training and work; addressing cultural barriers like prejudice, stigma and exclusion; and improving adult and digital literacy levels, dental, physical and mental health." Adrienne Picone, CEO, TasCOSS

04.01.2022 "If people dont have the supplement, they cant consume as much. "That affects demand for all sorts products right across the Australian economy but particularly the services sector and thats where we will see the biggest job losses. "The Federal Government effectively doubled the JobSeeker payment formerly known as Newstart by introducing a $550 Coronavirus Supplement when the pandemic first took hold and forced the mass shutdown of businesses."... Nicki Hutley, Partner, Deloitte

01.01.2022 We have many incredible people in the Tasmanian alcohol and other drug sector, and we got to meet one today. This is Kyle Perry who works at Velocity Transforma...tions in Hobart. Kyles first book The Bluffs has been Number 1 around the country in sales recently. He wrote it in 2016 and one of the characters is based on a client he had worked with on the north west coast. His portrayal of Tasmania was also very relatable. Its a great gripping read with alcohol and other drugs portrayed in a nuanced and clever way interwoven with characters that are recognisable to our sector. Amazing! Congratulations Kyle!
