24.01.2022 ** UPDATE COVID-19 SOUTH AUSTRALIA ** THA CEO Steve Old has been chasing answers from the Tasmanian Government over the past 36hrs in relation to the latest COVID-19 situation in South Australia and the impact this potentially has on our state and industry. Can we encourage all industry operators to listen in to Premier Gutwein’s and Mark Veitch’s press conference at 2:15pm today for the latest information on what this means for Tasmania.... 21.01.2022 The Tasmanian Hospitality Association has launched the Stand Up for Hospitality campaign, urging the state Government to ease the unnecessary restrictions on drinking alcohol while standing up. The THA is imploring the Government to ease the restrictions on stand up drinking. THA CEO Steve Old says Public Health need to reconsider the restrictions that are crippling the industry. Even if they said that it’s a recommendation it’s recommended that you sit but if those peopl...e really want to stand then they’re allowed to stand. We can’t see why the government couldn’t implement that. Tasmania has had 84 days since the last case of coronavirus in the state, yet Public Health are still dragging their heels on releasing the restrictions on the sector. Western Australia has now allowed unrestricted stand up drinking for four months yet residents in the safest state in the country are still being forced to sit down. The industry has to take a STAND. Many thanks to The Richmond Arms Hotel General Manager Tom Darke for hosting the launch. 18.01.2022 Fantastic to have Tasmanian Labor backing the 'Stand Up for Hospitality' campaign, urging the State Government to ease the restrictions on seated drinking. Beach Hotel Burnie owner and THA Board Member Ben Carpenter joined Labor Leader Rebecca White on the North West Coast to discuss the issue. White said the Government hadn’t been able to explain the evidence that supported the continued ban on standing to have a drink in hospitality venues. The government’s insistence tha...t people must be seated at all times while drinking alcohol is causing more pain for an industry that’s already been hammered by COVID-19, Ms White said. Many venues are reporting an ongoing loss of businesses as people cancel Christmas functions and make other arrangements so they don’t have to sit down to have a drink. The ban on drinking while standing up is inconsistent with the advice provided by public health experts in other states, making it even harder to justify. 15.01.2022 The hospitality industry is among the hardest hit from the impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic. We applaud Willing Bros owner and THA board member Carl Windsor for opening up about his own mental health struggles and the challenges of the pandemic has presented personally and professionally. We know Carl is not alone, with many industry members struggling as the restrictions on the industry take a toll mentally and financially with some venue owners and operators being forced ...to reconsider their ongoing viability, and essentially their livelihoods. The THA has launched a mental health resource via the website, gathering the most relevant mental health information and resources in one place. We are not the experts, but the resource does provide a platform where experts can be accessed and information can be sourced for anyone who is looking for help, or for anyone concerned about their friends or workmates. The THA will continue to support the entire industry through this extremely challenging time and we are looking at further ways we can develop meaningful resources focused on mental health. 04.01.2022 The THA will continue to lobby all levels of government, on behalf of our members, to ensure the ongoing viability of our industry through these challenging times. The government are preparing to open the borders to COVID-free states but the Health Department are essentially keeping the doors closed on many hospitality venues who accommodate for those visitors. Interstate jurisdictions have relaxed their restrictions to allow patrons to stand while drinking and dancing, priv...ileges that won’t be afforded to those people visiting Tasmania. The THA is working closely with venues to ensure they are meeting the highest health and safety standards and we believe easing restrictions to allow ‘vertical drinking’ will pose no greater risk of infection transmission. We strongly encourage Public Health to reconsider their unrelenting stance on these restrictions. Our once vibrant hospitality venues will be vulnerable as long as the unnecessary constraints are in place.

04.01.2022 Inconsistent state hospitality restrictions confuses visitors Inconsistent state hospitality restrictions confuses visitors Tasmania’s borders are now open to our closest and most frequent visitation state Victoria. Victoria has now been declared COVID-free after 28 days without a new case and no active cases, while New South Wales has also gone 28 days without any mystery community transmission cases.... Tasmania has been COVID-free for over 100 days and had no community transmission for 160 days. We are now welcoming visitors to Tasmania and encouraging them to travel, stimulate the economy and enjoy the state’s ‘premium’ offerings, but hospitality operators cannot fulfil these expectations with the current restraints on the industry. Visitors are increasingly confused with the inconsistent restrictions across each jurisdiction and the reasoning behind Tasmanian venue operators not allowing them to stand up and drink inside after such a lengthy period without cases in the state. The Tasmanian Hospitality Association continues to call for Dr. Mark Veitch to ease restrictions on hospitality venues. We have had two weeks with stand-up drinking allowed in outdoor spaces only and this has been two weeks of confusion for patrons and operators, and a challenging time for staff who are forced to police the requirements. It has also two more weeks that venues without outdoor spaces have continued to question their viability with many patrons driven away by the prospect of being forced to sit down while drinking. The THA has recommended the Book-Eat-SAFE app and the Government is now supporting an alternative contact tracing and venues are willing to comply with mandated contact tracing, through these methods or paper-detail collection. Venues desperately need a roadmap out of these restrictions and guidance on what more they can do to achieve the required ‘safety level’. Venues are losing more and more events every day with so much uncertainty around the restrictions and no roadmap in place. All we ask for is a date as to when restrictions will be eased so patrons and operators can proceed with event bookings with some confidence. Tasmanian operators and patrons have demonstrated their willingness to comply with the restrictions and ensure the safety of themselves and each other. We are urging the Tasmanian Government to reconsider the unnecessary restrictions that continue to hamper the hospitality industries’ viability and leaving operators in a state of uncertainty in what would usually be the busiest time of the year. #standupforhospitality
