For further details visit: https://www.police.tas.gov.au/emergency-services-road-safe/

22.01.2022 During National Volunteer Week we're saying thank you to all TFS volunteers - including the families who volunteer, like these three generations of the Gee fami...ly - Lachlan, Richard and Joan. Lachlan’s brothers Hamish and Harrison are also junior members and Joan’s late husband Tony was a former chair of the State Fire Commission. To our TFS volunteer families - thank you! #NationalVolunteerWeek #NVW2020

16.01.2022 Do you have a plan for what you'll do if there's a bushfire and you need to evacuate your home? If that plan includes staying at an evacuation centre, we'd urge... you think a little differently this year. As the threat of COVID will be with us for some time, we all need to prepare a little differently to stay COVID-safe in the event of other emergencies that may impact us and our communities. Coordinating an evacuation during the pandemic carries extra risks of close physical contact and person-to-person transmission of the virus, not only to those evacuating but also to emergency services personnel and evacuation centre volunteers. Now is the time to review your personal bushfire or emergency plans and identify somewhere safe to go if you need to leave your home and evacuate to a safe place. Ask friends or relatives outside your area if you would be able to stay with them. Think about when to leave and have a plan for when you’ll go and what you’ll take with you, and remember to encourage your neighbours, friends and family to do the same. And don’t forget to pack some masks or face coverings and hand sanitiser in your emergency kit, just in case. #covidsafe

15.01.2022 Great news the new Tasmanian Government Radio Network (TasGRN) is now a major step closer with the signing of a contract between the State Government and Telst...ra today. This project represents the most extensive technological upgrade to multi-agency emergency radio communications in Tasmania’s history. Implementation of the TasGRN provides for the safety of our emergency responders across Tasmania, as well as the whole Tasmanian community. The new network will provide improved radio communications capacity and coverage, allowing our emergency services and government agencies to communicate, to deliver a coordinated and timely response. Construction of the new network will begin in 2021 with user organisations including Tasmania Fire Service, Tasmania Police and Tasmania SES, expected to commence migrating over to the new network in the 2022/2023 financial year.

14.01.2022 Hazard icons across the country have a new consistent look. The new Australian Warning System introduces several changes to the way the community will be notifi...ed about hazards. We're rolling out the first stage of the changes to the Australian Warning System for bushfire in Tassie today. The changes will include the way bushfire warnings are displayed on the TFS website. From today, consistent colours will be used for: Advice (yellow), Watch and Act (orange); and Emergency Warning (red) The icon shapes will also change on maps from diamonds to triangles. While the colours and icons change, the meanings of the levels do not change. The changes are designed to bring consistency to the way warnings are displayed across Australia. Over time more states will use the new colours and icons and they will be used for other hazards like floods and storms. Further changes will occur in Tasmania in 2021, including enhancements to our warning messages. The Australian Warnings System is based on community research and good practice, in terms of what communities recognise and what gets people to take action during an emergency.

12.01.2022 Remote area firefighters are deployed to fight fires in remote areas and in difficult terrain. A range of skills are required that vary greatly to traditional f...irefighting. Volunteers will play a vital role in enhancing our remote area firefighting capability this summer and beyond. The first 20 will be ready to go this week after an intensive period being trained by our skilled and experienced RATs. 10 more will be ready by December, increasing our remote area firefighter numbers to about 130. RATs in training this weekend at Buckland by Matt Davis (TFS)

11.01.2022 It's R U OK? Day, a reminder that every day is a day to start a conversation that could change a life. Today we're calling on Australians to learn what to say a...fter R U OK? so they can keep the conversation going when someone says they're not OK. There's more to say after R U OK? Learn what to say when listening with an open mind Learn what to say when encouraging action Learn what to say when checking in Learn how to continue a conversation that could change a life. When we know what to say next we can help someone open up and find pathways to support long before they're in crisis. Learn what to say next and help us move closer to our vision of a world where we're all connected and are protected from suicide. Head to www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

10.01.2022 Heaters and fire places need their space. Always keep anything flammable at least two metres away from your winter warmer to avoid them catching on fire. Be fire safe this winter.

08.01.2022 On Father’s Day last year we told you about a journey our community was embarking on with a very special TFS family. Firefighters and other TFS staff from acros...s Tassie pledged their backpay to help Eleanor Oakley get to the USA for a life saving clinical trial to treat a relapse of an aggressive and life threatening form of childhood cancer called Neuroblastoma. This sparked a groundswell of fundraising events and initiatives across TFS and beyond. Eleanor is the daughter of Hobart firefighter Rob. This Father’s Day we are pleased to share with you that Eleanor and her family are now back in Tasmania, she has recently turned 4 and is cancer free! It’s amazing what can be achieved with a little help from our friends! Happy Father’s Day to Rob and all the dads out there.

04.01.2022 Ahead of warming conditions forecast over the weekend and with an expected peak on Monday, the TFS is enacting a permit embargo for southern Tasmania from 2am t...omorrow. The developing hot, dry conditions with strengthening winds forecast across the south of the state will increase the potential fire risk for many areas particularly the Upper Derwent, Midlands, Coal Valley, and southern parts of the East Coast which continue to experience below average rainfall and curing of vegetation, particularly grassland. The permit embargo will remain in place until midnight Monday 11 January at this stage. No permits will be issued through this period. Existing permits, or permit fires conducted over the last week are to be checked and fully extinguished where possible. Registration of burning of vegetation under 1 cubic metre will also be discouraged and TFS urges the public to take additional care with fires in the open, or operation of equipment that may cause accidental ignition of vegetation during this period. There are also campfire restrictions in place. For further information on these areas check https://parks.tas.gov.au/explore-/know-before-you-go/alerts TFS is continuing to monitor the daily update reports from the Bureau of Meteorology and we ask people to stay aware and up to date of the situation as there may be other restrictions and notifications over the next two days as the forecast develops. To report a fire, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. Check with your local council for additional burning restrictions. For information visit www.fire.tas.gov.au

The total fire ban is in force in the following municipalities: Brighton Derwent Valley Hobart Sorell Central Highlands Glamorgan Spring Bay Huon Valley Southern Midlands Clarence Glenorchy Kingborough Tasman

03.01.2022 Tasmania’s newest remote area firefighters are being put through their paces learning how to work safely in and around aircraft. The first cohort of 30 volunte...ers that were selected through a recent Expressions of Interest process are now training to enhance the State’s specialist remote area firefighting capability. The training will be completed during the spring months, with the volunteers adding to the existing personnel in the TFS, PWS and Sustainable Timber Tasmania before the summer season. Remote area firefighters access difficult terrain by helicopter or on foot, and use special light weight pumps or hand tools to protect our iconic natural assets or to fight bushfires before they spread and impact our cities, towns and critical infrastructure.
