18.01.2022 TCDA members recently participated in a trial ‘take all harvest’ of long-spined sea urchin between Marion Bay and Cape Hauy. Read the story from Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies - IMAS below.
17.01.2022 In August 2020, the TCDA were part of a collaborative effort between the Handfish Conservation Project, and Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies - IMAS, working alongside DPIPWE (Fisheries Tasmania) to tackle one of the key issues threatening red handfish populations: habitat loss through urchin overgrazing. A team of TCDA divers removed an incredible 1276 kg (almost 17000 native urchins) across two sites where handfish were subsequently released. Although not all the urchins were of harvest quality, TCDA President Renison Bell commented that contributing to a good cause and helping red handfish populations was worth their effort.
17.01.2022 From Sunday's Mercury: And the good news is that the underwater world is looking really healthy out there right now. Particularly around St Helens, the sea urchins had been having a terrible impact on the kelp forests but divers have been systematically clearing them out for commercial scale and that has made a huge difference.

05.01.2022 The newly elected TCDA Committee held their inaugural meeting today. Thanks to Eastcoaster Tasmania for providing space. We have plenty of ideas for growing and improving the commercial dive industry further.
05.01.2022 Take a look below the surface as we harvest top-quality urchin. If long-spined sea urchin numbers are left unchecked, they threaten our natural Tasmanian marine ecosystem. The Tasmanian Commercial Divers are leading the way in managing the issue, with over 1000T harvested in the last 3 years, providing urchin roe (uni) to customers all over the world.
