25.01.2022 Newmarket night in Launceston had a different feel this year with three-time champion I’m Wesley absent from the field. It was the Team Wells-trained Gee Gee Secondover who was crowned the new champ thanks to a terrific ride from Bulent Muhcu. The Newmarket win was part of a double for Muhcu who shared riding honours with Ismail Toker and Siggy Carr who each had two winners, Siggy also preparing two as a trainer. Matt Reid has the review of all eight races as well as an addition to the FORMPLUS Black Book.

24.01.2022 A sustained stretch of racing on the Devonport synthetic finally came to an end on Sunday, with Hobart and Launceston now scheduled to carry the load until December. Two names that generally don’t enjoy as much success in Devonport as they do on the grass tracks are Scott Brunton and David Pires but they each enjoyed a day out on Sunday with three winners respectively. Read the full review of the seven race program from Matt Reid.

24.01.2022 We head back to Hobart for a nine-event card with the discretionary looking the race of the night where Call Me Hector will be looking to bounce back into the winners list but will face stiff opposition from Lid Reader and Sea Double Ugrant who is knocking on the door. Salvator Mundi appears one of the better bets of the night along with One Yankee Ginga in the last. The first leg of the quadrella looks a great clash between impressive last start winner Iden Forest and Donny ...in Paris who has had no luck of late. Jamie Cockshutt's Suggested Bets for the evening: Race 1 - 3 units to win on STEPPING STONES (4) Race 2 - 3 units to win on IFBUTZANDMAYBES (13) and ROCK THE CASBOLT (10) Race 3 - 3 units to win on STAROFREMBERANCE (12) Race 4 - 3 units to win on both EARL JUJON (12) and LORD STARK (9) Race 5 - 5 units to win on IDEN FOREST (3) and 3 units to win on DONNY IN PARIS (6) Race 6 - 3 units to win on SEA DOUBLE UGRANT (7) Race 7 - 4 units to win on GIPSY TREASURE (9) Race 8 - 5 units to win on SALVATOR MUNDI (3) Race 9 - 5 units to win on ONE YANKEE GINGA (6)

23.01.2022 Newhart joined an elite band of gallopers at Ladbrokes All-Weather Spreyton on Wednesday when he powered his way to victory in the $100,000 Ladbrokes Devonport Cup to become the first since champion Brallos to win the race in consecutive seasons. The Leanne Gaffney-trained five-year-old emerged last season as one of the most promising young stayers when he won the Devonport club’s showcase event for the first time, but this latest win was easily a career-best effort. The win ...also gave jockey Craig Newitt his seventh Devonport Cup to give him the record of most wins by a jockey, eclipsing the previous best held by Max Baker. Newhart ($3.40 fav) was superbly ridden by Newitt who allowed the gelded son of Fighting Sun to settle near the rear of the field from the outside gate, while Dark Wanderer ($4.20) assumed the role of pacemaker with the well-backed Gee Gee Fiorente ($5.50) content to sit just off the speed. Galway Girl ($23) also raced near the speed and when she emerged to stake her claim at the top of the straight Newitt called on Newhart for the big effort. But once Newhart caught sight of the leader he knuckled down to his task and drew clear close to home to defeat Galway Girl with outsider White Cliffs ($41) flashing home along the rails to grab third. I love this horse and to win the race again from the outside barrier was a credit to him and to his rider Craig Newitt, Gaffney said. If he comes through this race in good order, he will head to one of the lead-up races to the Hobart Cup but that’s as far ahead as we are planning. He is a real good horse, and we haven’t seen the best of him, Newitt said. Orange Roughie that went into the race on the back of five consecutive wins in graded events, ran on gamely to finish fourth. Newhart’s cup win gave Gaffney four winners for the day in what was clearly her most memorable day at the races. Watch Newhart win his second Ladbrokes Devonport Cup:

23.01.2022 Risdon Vale trainer Robin Stocks plays a strong hand in Thursday night’s fourth race, The Mercury Mixed Fourth and Fifth Grade over the middle distance of 599 metres in Hobart. Three of the seven runners are prepared by Stocks, with two of his kennel representatives last start winners. Rusty The Crow (Box 4) has won two of his last four starts including a win over the 599 metres last week where he used box one to full advantage to lead and was never in doubt to score by 5.5 l...engths in 34.34s. The My Bro Fabio Raven Pearl dog, has had three tries from the blue box in the past for a win and two placings and opened up at $4.20, on the third line of betting. Hi Sky has drawn box two but does have a vacant box to his inside with the scratching of Zebs Ladies. Three of the four wins for the Fernando Bale Merinda Hannah bitch have been from the two inside boxes, including a win in Launceston last Monday week over the 600-metre trip. From box two on that occasion, Hi Sky began well to settle in second position before getting up underneath the leader to take the lead off the back to score by 3.5 lengths over Anndar Winx in 35.27s Sunbound in box seven rounds out Stocks trio of runners. The winner of four races has been placed in five of his last six efforts including his previous two efforts over the middle distance in Launceston and Hobart respectively. The main dangers for Stocks’ trio include Twisted Reality (Box 8) who won the Greg Fahey Mid Distance Championship three starts ago in 34.17s, and Sacred Shadow who was runner-up to Twisted Reality in that race. There are many short price favourites across the card including Devonport Breeders Classic winner Recall who jumps from box one in race one, Lily Lola in race three, Highland Wonder in the fifth race, Monster Harley in race six, Vintage Fame in race seven and Connected in race eight. Thursday night’s meeting is the first with a $266,000 stake money increase for Tasmanian greyhound racing with all races across the state being increased by $400.

23.01.2022 Hall of Fame trainer Gary White doesn’t have a big team of horses these days but he will be well represented on Sunday in Hobart with five horses in action. Peter Staples spoke with White ahead of the eight-race program to record an edition of the From the Stables podcast.

23.01.2022 Thoroughbred action comes thick and fast this week in Tasmania with Launceston hosting an eight-race program on Wednesday night, just four days after the previous meeting. The rail returns to the true position after being out 9m on Saturday which may have the potential to play a bit to the front and inside given the fresh ground. After the track raced as a soft 7 on Saturday, finer conditions leading up to Wednesday night should see a soft 5 or good 4 rated surface.... Matt Reid turned 20 units into 46 with his Staking Strategy on Saturday, take a look at what he has tonight. Race 1 - 1 unit to win on both Elite Diva (5) and Cheeky One (13) Race 2 - 3 units to win on Goodness Gracie (7) and 1 unit to win on Gee Gee Top Tip (12) Race 3 - 2 units to win on Rubyranger (6) Race 4 - 5 units to win on Our Shinkansen (6) Race 5 - 1 unit each-way on Mr Churchill (5) Race 6 - 5 units to win on Assaranca (7) Race 7 - 2 units each-way on Artuso (7) Race 8 - 1 unit to win on Little River Boy (4)

22.01.2022 After a brilliant win second-up from a break, trainer Chris Howlett is confident that Major In Art gelding Iden Forest can make it two wins in a row when he lines up in the Belle Parker @ Homes Pace in Hobart on Sunday night. Iden Forest registered his first win in almost 12-months on Sunday when driven confidently by Matthew Howlett in the middle stages where he left a one-out two-back position to find the spot outside the leader. Matthew knows him inside out, and he does a... good job driving him, he doesn’t get the credit that he should, as he is a great little driver, said trainer Chris Howlett after the 1m 58.6s victory. Iden Forest had 11-months away from the track during 2020 due to injury. He did his check ligament, so he had six-months off, explained the trainer. On Sunday Iden Forest has drawn barrier three in the fifth race, a rating 55 to 59 event and the trainer is happy with how the pacer has come through last week’s effort. He seems ok since his last run and he worked good during the week, said the Broadmarsh based trainer who is expecting a forward showing on Sunday. I think he continues to improve with each run, and if he behaves, I would think he’s hard to beat again, said Howlett. In-form driver Troy McDonald will be out to extend his lead at the top of the state drivers title in the early stages of the season. McDonald drove a treble at Carrick Park on Friday night and has a number of good drives on Sunday’s card including last start winners Guys Bettor Bet (race five) and Tarleton Riley (race eight). Sunday’s nine-race card commences at 17:39 and will be shown on TasracingTV and Sky Racing 1. Trainers, owners and breeders are reminded that nominations for the 2021 Sweepstakes series that are to be held later in the season close with the Tasmanian Trotting Club at this Sunday’s race meeting.

22.01.2022 Lightly raced four-year-old mare Our Shinkansen has the chance to break her maiden status when she takes on a modest maiden field over 1200 metres in Launceston on Wednesday night. The Adam Trinder-trained mare has started only once for an eye-catching fourth in a strong maiden over 1200m in Launceston on 1 April, the night before the industry was shut down for 10 weeks because of the pandemic. Trinder opted to give her a short spell and while she lacks experience, her trial ...form leading up to this assignment is impressive. She stepped out in a trial on her home track in Devonport towards the end of last month and scored an impressive two-length win over Lady Joker and Easy Road over 800 metres, running the trip in 50.48 seconds and ran home her last 600m in 35.15. In her latest trial on 6 October, she defeated Ascot Lad and Easy Road and this time she clocked 48.96 for the 800m. Our Shinkansen (Bullet Train-Hitchhike) is from a Strategic mare and her grand dam Theta is by Octagonal. At her only start she began well from a good gate and settled third and ran to the front in the home straight, only to be run down over the final 100m. Her recent trials suggest she has matured and races more truly and it is on that form punters are sure to invest. Trinder has a big team entered at the meeting with Dothraki Princess (race 5) also ready to show her best. Dothraki Princess has had three starts this time in with her last two efforts producing thirds in Devonport, the latest over 1650m behind Galway Girl. She meets that winner better at the weights on Wednesday night and from a good gate (2) she gets her chance to register her first win since September last year.

22.01.2022 Sunday’s Derwent Park Plumbing Maiden (1390 metres) in Hobart contains many horses that have been trying a long time for a victory. One horse that fits into that category but not for the same reasons as many of his competition is seven-year-old gelding Lygon who will be lining up for his first Australian start. The son of Galileo is a half-brother to 2016 Melbourne Cup winner Almandin and last raced in Ireland way back in October 2016.... The gelding was purchased by prominent owner Lloyd Williams to hopefully follow in the footsteps of his half-brother, but injury curtailed those ambitions and provided an opportunity for his new trainer, Seven Mile Beach-based Joel Flannery. He is coming off a tendon injury and I was able to secure him when I finished up working for Lloyd (Williams), explained Joel Flannery who was based at Mount Macedon with the Williams team in Victoria and secured Lygon for free due to the relationship he had built with Lloyd and his son Nick. I looked after Almandin and because we won the Cup and I was going off training, he was happy to give me the horse and wish me all the best, added Flannery on the seven-start maiden who sustained his injury towards the middle of 2018. With a combined 143 starts for just 19 placings among the opposition, Flannery hopes Sunday’s race provides a winning kick-off point for his gelding who will be better as the distances increase. He’s going there on Sunday and I’m using it as a trial for him, it’s well below his distance. He’s been in work a long time; he was in work from January. COVID hit and I tipped him out for a few weeks, and he’s been back in work ever since, said the trainer who has had nine previous starters, largely with horses that have been long prices in the market. Flannery is reluctant to send his horse to Devonport or Longford for a trial due to the tight nature of those tracks which means the 7YO will no doubt derive benefit from Sunday’s run, but the trainer is confident that he has much better races in store. We’ll see how he goes on Sunday and how he pulls up but there is bigger aims for the horse. As long as he comes through Sunday well, he’ll probably have another run or two and then we’ll give him a little break and get him up for the (Summer) carnival. Flannery has a team of five horses operating out of the Seven Mile Beach stables of Premiership winning trainer Scott Brunton and is eager to expand, enjoying his new life in Tasmania. If I can get horses and owners, I’ll be very happy.

22.01.2022 You can tell the Tasmanian Sires’ Stakes series is ramping up another gear, with nine of last week’s winners being Tasmanian bred. The state’s best two-year-olds were on display in Hobart on Sunday with the Evicus heats and a prelude of the Dandy Patch, the Hobart card following a great meeting in Devonport. This week we have two meetings.... Launceston race in the regular Sunday, while the Tasmanian Trotting Club stage a rare Tuesday night meeting. Catch-up on all the Tasmanian harness racing news in Duncan Dornauf's weekly highlights.

22.01.2022 A really good night of racing takes place in Hobart on Thursday with some very smart pups engaged. The feature of the night is the Ma Morgan St Leger where the market is having trouble splitting Wynburn Sheean and Kintyre at the head of the market. Mike Clarke's Betting Plan for the night:... Race 1 - WYNBURN BURNER (5) 2 units to WIN Race 2 - PAIR’S SIX (1) 2 units to WIN Race 3 - LUCKY JEMMA (2) 1 unit to WIN and 2 units to PLACE Race 4 - GEE WHIZ ARCHIE (2) 2 units to WIN Race 5 - SPLOTCHED (3) 2 units to WIN Race 6 - 2 units to WIN on OUTLAW TEDDY (5) and WYNBURN LETHAL (1) Race 7 - WYNBURN SHEEAN (6) 1 unit to WIN Race 8 - NOAH BOLT (2) 1 unit to WIN and 3 units to PLACE Race 9 - HOOKED ON BRENDA (8) 2 units to WIN Race 10 - CRISIS POINT (9) 1 unit to PLACE

22.01.2022 Galway Girl has the potential to be one of trainer-breeder Graeme McCulloch’s best investments in a long time. McCulloch purchased Galway Girl as a potential broodmare earlier this year with the intent of sending her to an interstate-based stallion this season but after giving her a chance to prove herself on the racetrack prior to retiring to stud she has excelled. Last Sunday in Devonport Galway Girl made it a hat-trick of wins despite stepping up significantly in grade and... distance. She won two in succession over 1350m in low graded events in Devonport but at this most recent outing she delivered enough to suggest she could even head to a Devonport Cup. This mare’s overall times and sectionals have been great, and she is only going to get better as the season progresses, McCulloch said. My first thought was to send her to a stallion this year but that is now on hold until next season. I was fairly confident she would run well over a mile because she’d already won at that distance interstate and that she loves the synthetic I am seriously thinking about heading her towards the Devonport Cup. Galway Girl was ridden by apprentice Brandon Louis who had the five-year-old travelling three-wide without cover to the home turn before releasing the reins. She sped clear and for a moment connections thought the inexperienced rider may have pushed the go button too soon. I was a bit nervous when Brandon let her go early but she was up to the task. Galway Girl ($3.20EF) went on to defeat the in-form Sh’bourne Rebel ($6.50) by almost two lengths with Dothraki Princess ($3.20EF) in third. The mare covered the 1650m in 1m.41.31s and ran home her last 600 metres in 35.93. Galway Girl (I am Invincible-Whistling Dixie) is the daughter of a Group-winning Pins mare that won the Eulogy Stakes over 1600 metres at Ellerslie in New Zealand where she was bred. This mare is exceptionally bred and that’s why I bought her, but she still wants to be a racehorse so we might as well capitalise on it. She is a five-year-old that has had only 14 starts and when you look at her record of four wins and six minor placings, she is clearly talented. McCulloch said he would give the mare a couple of weeks in the paddock and bring her back for a crack at the Devonport Cup in early January.

22.01.2022 It was a busy week of greyhound racing around the state last week and a new one commences with 10 races in Launceston on Monday night. It’s not a program where I could find a special but Roulette in race five looks good value at around $6, as does Ordon Sword to place in race seven. Mike Clarke's Betting Plan for the night:... Race 1 - BLONDE TURTLE (2) 1 unit to WIN Race 2 - GOOD BOY (3) 1 unit to PLACE Race 3 - HIGHGATE BILLIE (2) 1 unit to PLACE Race 4 - MOUNTAIN MISS (8) 1 unit to PLACE Race 5 - ROULETTE (2) 2 units to WIN Race 6 - DEWANA MACCA (3) 1 unit to PLACE Race 7 - ORDON SWORD (5) 2 units to PLACE Race 8 - FERNIE (2) 2 units to PLACE Race 9 - GYPSIES LUCK (3) 2 units to WIN Race 10 - MOLOTOV MISTRESS (6) 1 unit to WIN

22.01.2022 The first Tasmanian meeting of Summer takes place in Devonport on Tuesday with an eight-race card. It’s the third meeting in the last seven days on the North-West Coast which appears to have impacted the depth through the program. It’s a competitive card though with the first race scheduled for 13:06. Mike Clarke's Betting Plan for the afternoon:... Race 1 - HICCUP HERMAN (6) 1 unit to PLACE Race 2 - SHE’S A PRINCESS (7) 1 unit to WIN Race 3 - BUCKLE UP ETHAN (4) 1 unit to WIN Race 4 - WINKLEE FRANKIE (3) 1 unit to WIN Race 5 - WINKLEE MAGIC (6) 1 unit to PLACE Race 6 - WINKLEE CASEY (2) 2 units to WIN Race 7 - LEICA PRAYER (2) 1 unit to WIN Race 8 - MEEHAN NELLY (3) 1 unit to WIN

21.01.2022 There’s no better person to speak to in Tasmanian greyhound racing this week than Brennan Ryan with his team having runners in both features in Hobart on Thursday night and his family breeding Handsome Prince who is a finalist in the TAB Million Dollar Chase. In episode 19 of Tasracing Kennel talk, Brennan gives his thoughts on their chances. In the review of the week’s racing around the state, trainer Anthony Bullock had a night out in Launceston on Monday with five of the f...irst six winners. 21.01.2022 The first two-year-old race of the season will be run and won in Hobart on Sunday and while it is not the feature race on the eight-event card, it is the one that will attract the greatest amount of interest. The race has attracted a capacity field of 10 with three emergencies, all of them having been to the trials at least once. Launceston played host to five two-year-old trials on 29 October and every winner is engaged on Sunday and they are likely to battle it out for favo...uritism. The Rowan Hamer-trained Lacerate (Charge Forward-Maisie Lou) clocked the fastest time of the five trial winners over 800 metres (47.69). Lacerate scored by a neck from the Graeme McCulloch-trained Wheeling that had a touch of shin soreness after the trial, so he has been saved for better races later in the season. The Cameron Thompson-trained Coeur De Lyon (Lionhearted-Guyra Gal) impressed in winning his trial in a time of 48.14 seconds and would only need to take that form into the race to be very competitive. Novice trainer Patrick Dargan prepares Fighting Styx (Fighting Sun-River Styx) impressed in winning her trial in Launceston, scoring by two lengths from Turk Warrior that was not fully extended by rider Ismail Toker. Alpine Blast (Alpine Eagle-Rose of Woorim) suffered a mishap at the start in his trial in Launceston, so trainer John Blacker gave him another chance in a trial at Longford this week that he won impressively. Missing the start in the trial forced us to trial again at Longford, so if he remains in good order he will start on Sunday, Blacker said. Geegee Lucky Jess is one of three Wordsmith youngsters to make it into the field and she may not have run a quick time in winning her Launceston trial, but she was one of the most impressive, being eased down over the final 100 metres to win easily. Her trainer Stuart Gandy said after the trial win that he expected her to be a serious contender in some of the better juvenile races this season. The two other Wordsmith youngsters in the field are Gee Gee Otherwords (Wordsmith-Gee Gee’s La Quita) and Gee Gees Fifth Test (Wordsmith-Gee Gees Firstover) that both finished third in their respective Launceston trials. The 2YO Maiden (900m) is race two on the card. The first race is scheduled to start at 13:25 with the last of eight at 17:30. TasracingTV will live stream the meeting and Matt Reid will host the coverage and the races will also be broadcast on Sky Racing 1.

21.01.2022 The Leeroy Rogue Laurels and the St Leger Ma Morgan headline a top 10-race card in Hobart on Thursday evening, where Dilston trainer Pat Ryan is represented in both races. Ryan puts the polish on Splotched in the Laurels over 461 metres and the Sh Avatar See Blue’s Girl bitch is having her first start for 59 days after running fourth to Ava Wine in Launceston back in late March. She had an injury, so she had to have a break, she has had some rehab to get her ready again, ...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Leading trainer Ben Yole had a day out at Carrick Park on Sunday winning five of the nine races held. He didn’t have to wait long to get on the board when Karalta Dazzler produced his usual brilliant standing start manners to lead in the claimer over 2150 metres to score at double-figure odds on the tote. Driver Gareth Rattray got to work on the pacer a long way from home but was able to hold off his rivals by six metres in 2m 1.1s.... He was coming back to a standing start claiming event, he began well, and Gareth knows the horse well and drove him an absolute treat, said trainer Ben Yole about the win. Lake Eyre at double-figure odds gave Yole an early double when he took out the second race on the card. After settling one-out and three-back, driver Mark Yole elected to lead up the three-wide line over the final 800 metres where he proved too good for his rivals late. He hasn’t had much luck of late but things worked out nicely today, and Mark (Yole) jumped back on, Conor (Crook) had been driving him good but things just went his way, the trainer said. Somedan had been a regular in the Sectional Stars section of Tasracing’s Harness Highlights, and he was able to record his seventh win of the season in a rating 60 to 70 event, sneaking into the field courtesy of the concession claim of driver Taylor Ford. He goes well when he can lead and goes well when a female can drive him, so when Taylor (Ford) was able to lead and dictate he was going to be hard to beat from there, said Yole about the victory of the seven-year-old who recorded the quickest winning mile rate of the day in 2m 0.9s. Tally Operator overcame a second row draw to score in a rating 56 to 59 event where former Kiwi driver Sam Clotworthy headed straight to the fence and never went around another horse after getting a run through along the pegs. The leader Streetside Classic threw the race away when the driver of that pacer simply allowed him to roll off the pegs when having the race won. This horse had been going terrific, but his last couple had been a little bit disappointing, I think we had been a bit easy on him at home, so we stepped up his work and Sam Clotworthy gave him a pearler of a drive, an absolute peach it was, Yole said. Mach Charm (pictured) was the last leg of Yoles five-win haul and completed a diving double for Taylor Ford, who is preparing for an interstate working trip, when leading all the way to score in a 30 to 49 rated event. She has just come back into form, her last start was way better than her previous efforts, and this time of the year she seems to hit her straps so she may win another one pretty quick, said the trainer about the mares win. It was the sixth time in his career that Yole has trained five winners at a race meeting and it was the third time this season after training five winners in Hobart on 8 December and again in Burnie on 20 March.

20.01.2022 Tasmanian thoroughbred racing is back on the grass this Sunday for the first time since July as Hobart host an eight-race program. The draining capabilities of the re-developed StrathAyr track are likely to be tested with significant rainfall forecast across Saturday and Sunday. Unsurprisingly following the stretch of synthetic racing we see a lot of horses resuming and there are some exciting types in action that no doubt have much bigger targets in the coming months. In par...ticular the 4YO and 3YO Handicap’s create plenty of excitement with the likes of Galenus, Gee Gee Josie, First Accused and Apollo Rocket all being first-up for the campaign. Matt Reid's Staking Strategy for the day: Race 1 - 1 unit each-way on Kuroset (3) Race 2 - 2 units to win on Sally Sweetness (6) Race 3 - 5 units to win on First Accused (2) and 1 unit to win on Apollo Rocket (7) Race 4 - 2 units to win on Lygon (5) Race 5 - 3 units to win on Is Don Is Good (2) Race 6 - 5 units to win on Jeremiah (1) Race 7 - 3 units to win on Vallabar (2) and 2 units to win on Gympins (7) Race 8 - 1 unit to win on Gee Gee Queen Bee (2)

20.01.2022 A strong crowd was in attendance to celebrate Devonport Show Day at the combined harness and greyhound race meeting in Devonport, where two of the pacing winners will head to in next month’s Group 3 Golden Apple in Launceston. The Rohan Hillier-trained and driven Lip Reader won a discretionary handicap over 2645 metres while Victoria Pass chalked up his fifth win in a row. Lip Reader settled one-out and two-back before finding the spot outside the leader at the bell and prove...d too good for the leader Black Centurian by 3.1 metres with Perfect Mach a half head away third in a mile rate of 2m 4.1s. He had to be beating that field if he was going to be competitive in a race like the Golden Apple, said Hillier after the race. I had probably been a bit easy on him over the last fortnight, and this race was only a spur of the moment decision to go this week, added the trainer. The heats of the Golden Apple are the next target for Lip Reader with the heats set to be staged in Launceston on 13 December before the $30,000 Final on 19 December. The Devonport Cup in mid-January is also on the cards. He will miss the free-for-all in Hobart next and then go straight into the Golden Apple, said the winning trainer-driver. Some would suspect an issue with who would drive Lip Reader in the Golden Apple given Hillier trains and drives last year’s winner Ryley Major who produced a mammoth effort to win that event off a 30-metre handicap over the 2200 metres. However, Hillier indicated the star pacer might not be there which is devastating to think that the connections of one of the best pacers in the state are happy to stay at home and miss one of the state’s significant races. Conor (Crook) will be offered the drive if Ryley Major is in it, I just know how much the run took out of Ryley Major last year and this year looks like it is going to be a better class of horse off the front mark, said Hillier. Later in the night on the Devonport card the Zeke Slater-trained Victoria Pass made it five wins in a row and the trainer indicated that the Golden Apple is on the raider as is the Devonport Pacing Cup. The greyhound card was dominated by leading trainer Anthony Bullock who won five of the seven races. He won the opening race with White Poison (26.10) followed by Just Mercy (25.86) in race two. Bullock trained the trifecta in race four with I’m A Dominator (25.80) defeating Enchanted Spirit and Ordon Sword. The trainer's other winners where Dewana Macca (25.87) and Definite Signs (25.76) Greyhound racing returns to Devonport on Tuesday for eight races.

20.01.2022 Lightly raced four-year-old mare Our Shinkansen produced an outstanding effort to score a convincing win in Launceston on Wednesday night. The Adam Trinder-trained mare had trialled well prior to being exposed this time in and she took that form into the maiden race over 1200 metres with Ismail Toker aboard. The mare began well and settled midfield, but when Toker asked for an effort she quickly rounded up the leaders and went on to win by two lengths from Run Dance Fly ($6.5...0) and Wardell ($5.50). Trinder was delighted with the win and explained how she needed time to come to terms with racing. The ownership group has been very patient with her because we tried her earlier this year for a debut fourth but then the shutdown came (2 April) and once we realised that would carry on for too long, we put her away, Trinder said. She trialled well, and we were able to bring her to the races and capitalise on that tonight. Our Shinkansen (Bullet Train-Hitchhike) was a late maturer and Trinder was careful not to push her early in her career. She has always been a filly that has been soft in the bone. She’s been shin sore three times and had to be put away and we didn’t want to overexpose her through a synthetic (Devonport) season, so we made a plan to trial her up on the synthetic. But I was keen to get on the grass when it reopened, and it’s all worked out perfectly to get a great result. There are no specific plans for Our Shinkansen other than to graduate her through the grades, but on Wednesday night’s effort she won’t find it difficult picking up at least a couple more wins this time in. While Our Shinkansen was impressive, so too was Trinder’s highly rated four-year-old Easy Road that resumed with a sensational win in a benchmark 66 handicap over 1200m. Easy Road was heavily backed in to start the $4.20 favourite and despite sitting three-wide with no cover to the home turn, the gelded son of Super Easy stretched his lead up the home straight to score by almost four lengths from White Cliffs ($4.80) with Artuso ($4.80) squeezing through a narrow gap close to home to grab third. It was the gelding’s first start since February and Toker was very impressed with the effort. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this horse first-up, but he was explosive, Toker said. A lot of upside to this horse and I am looking forward to seeing what he can do in the future, Toker said, Easy Road produced excellent sectionals, running the last 800m in 46.51 (fastest sectional of the night over 1200m) for an overall time of 1:11.33. Trinder said Easy Road would more than likely have another start over 1200m because he felt the gelding was a bit under done for his first-up assignment and then be stretched out to longer trips up to 1600m. It was Toker’s third win for the night, but he also was placed aboard Assaranca ($2.20 fav) in a class one handicap and Tiltherewarsyou ($4.20) in a 0-60 handicap (race 8) over 1200m.

19.01.2022 Nine races will be decided in Launceston on Sunday night and Duncan Dornauf spoke with trainer-driver Matthew Cooper to discuss the two horses he will be lining up, both appear to be strong winning chances.

18.01.2022 Both Brennan Ryan and Matt Reid were trackside for the Group 2 Ladbrokes Launceston Cup Final on Monday night and in episode 36 of Kennel talk they recap the outstanding win of Wynburn Sheean. The upcoming week sees finals of the Tasbred Bonus Series on Thursday night and the Ladbrokes Classic in Devonport on Tuesday. Brennan gives his thoughts on both of those races, keen on one dog in particular in Hobart. Brennan Ryan’s selections for Hobart, 18 February.... Race 3 3. Blazing Black Race 4 2. Granola Race 8 8. Green Machine Listen to episode 36 of Kennel talk.

18.01.2022 Whitemore trainer Graeme McCulloch has three acceptors for the meeting under lights in Launceston on Wednesday, the headline act being Galway Girl who aims for her fourth straight win. McCulloch spoke with Peter Staples in the From the Stables podcast to discuss his chances.

17.01.2022 The two-year-olds flew around Hobart last week in the finals of the Sweepstakes which were taken out by Rocknovertime and Melnrowley on a night where there were many highlights. The two-year-olds will be back out in force on Sunday week in Hobart with heats of the Sires Stakes Series. This week harness racing heads to Launceston for a nine-race card with the $12,000 Tasmanian Horse Transport Show Cup the feature.... Duncan Dornauf covers all the harness news in weekly highlights.

17.01.2022 Mike Clarke’s FORMPLUS Black Book review last week produced Bucephalus who won in Launceston on Monday at $5. 15.01.2022 The Stuart Gandy-trained Gee Gees Magic Man bounced back to winning form with an emphatic victory in the Steve’s Liquor 0-60 Handicap over 1400 metres in Launceston on Wednesday night. Gee Gees Magic Man ($7) has been racing consistently on the synthetic in Devonport but back on the turf for the first time this season, he relished the outing. Rider Ismail Toker settled the Stuart Gandy-trained gelding just off the speed set by Limerick City that spreadeagled the field to lead... by 12 lengths down the back stretch. But when the leader started to paddle nearing the home turn the field closed in and when Toker called on his charge for an effort he powered to the lead and went on to score easily from Spihro ($13) and Coronation Pia ($4.80). This horse has been up for a long time, but he’s a good doer in the stable and thrives on his work, Gandy said. He dropped back from 1880m to 1400m tonight and we knew that he would be right there at the finish and he’s done that and a bit more. Gee Gees Magic Man prefers firmer going and he found that last night. The horse prefers it on top of the ground, so he relished that tonight and he also loves that strong tempo of racing. The favourite Goodness Gracie ($3.90) was well-placed fifth on the rails and was out in plenty of time to run on, but she failed to flatter over the concluding stages.

15.01.2022 The North West Greyhound Racing Club host a 10 race program in Devonport on Tuesday which starts at 12:09. On paper the Pat Ryan kennel should have a good day with Supreme Shadow ($1.40) and Savage Victor ($1.35) dominant favourites in their respective races. FORMPLUS Black Booker Stylish Ellyse has drawn poorly in race two but represents a good each-way chance with any luck.... Mike Clarke's full Betting Plan for the afternoon: Race 1 - WILMA’S SHADOW (4) 1 unit to WIN Race 2 - STYLISH ELLYSE (5) 1 unit to WIN Race 3 - BUCKLE UP KENZIE (1) 1 unit to WIN Race 4 - LIQUID CRYSTAL (3) 1 unit to WIN Race 5 - GYPSIES LUCK (7) 1 unit to WIN Race 6 - IT’S PHYLLIS (7) 2 units to PLACE Race 7 - OUTLAW TEDDY (3) 2 units to WIN Race 8 - SAVAGE VICTOR (2) 2 units to WIN Race 9 - LEVI (3) 1 unit to WIN Race 10 - ENCHANTED SPIRIT (4) 1 unit to WIN

15.01.2022 Tasmania lost one of its equine heroes when champion sprinter Hellova Street died because of a colic attack that he suffered on the eve of what would have been his 60th start. Hellova Street had been campaigning in Victoria in Listed and Group sprint events with the Paris Lane Stakes at Flemington yesterday hoping to add more silverware to his already full mantelpiece. The 10-year-old gelding was stricken with colic late on Friday and he died in the early hours of Saturday mo...rning. He was trained throughout his career by Scott Brunton, but everyone knew he belonged to his life partner and fellow trainer Tegan Keys who developed a special relationship with the horse. Keys rode him in all his trackwork, and the horse responded to her both on and off the track. Since winning a 3YO maiden in Hobart at his fourth race start seven years ago, Hellova Street went on to win another 19 times as well as notch 25 minor placings for career earnings of $1.291 million. Hellova Street’s imposing record included thirteen stakes wins, highlighted by two Tasmanian Newmarket Handicaps, three weight-for-age Mowbray Stakes, and the Group 3 Chatham Stakes at Flemington in 2017. He also was twice crowned Tasmanian Horse of the Year but what race lovers and punters alike will remember him for most was his incredible will to win. Hellova Street had early brilliance and a high cruising speed, but he also had stamina and that was his secret weapon. In his younger days he would lead in feature races and just when his rivals thought they had him covered, the gutsy son of Helike would find something extra to repel all challengers. Hellova Street took his owners, Larry and Melinda Lamont, Allan and Laurie Virieux, and Steve Saltmarsh on a wonderful journey. His 20 wins were great, but his second to champion mare Mystic Journey in the 2019 weight-for -age Thomas Lyons was one of his most heroic performances. So loved was the gelding by Brunton and Keys that in 2018 they named their training complex at Seven Mile Beach Hellova Stable. Brunton and Keys were so shaken by the horse’s death that they were unable to speak publicly about it yesterday. A tribute is being planned to remember Hellova Street with an announcement on what that entails to be made soon. When Hellova Street was made they broke the mould.

14.01.2022 The third meeting in the space of five days will be run in Devonport on Monday, an additional meeting added to the calendar after the cancelled Tasmanian Guineas program in Hobart. There certainly isn’t the top end quality we’ve seen at the past two feature programs with the highest grade of race a pair of benchmark 66’s but the opening race should be exciting with a new crop of two-year-olds mostly facing the starter for the first time. Reports from Wednesday’s Cup meeting w...ere that the inside was inferior going and the majority of those 10 winners came down the middle of the track so it will be worth monitoring any pattern on Monday. Matt Reid's Staking Strategy for the afternoon: Race 1 - 1 unit to win on both Lacerate (4) and Dawn Eagle (7) Race 2 - 2 units to win on Rosehaven (6) and 1 unit to win on Scots Wha Hae (2) Race 3 - 2 units to win on Gee Gee Silentnite (5) and 1 unit to win on Run Dance Fly (7) Race 4 - 1 unit to win on Barjeel (2) Race 5 - 1 unit to win on Gaius Julius (1) Race 6 - 3 units to win on Gee Gees Punter (3) Race 7 - 3 units each-way on Gold Current (4) Race 8 - 2 units each-way on Rodessa (11)

14.01.2022 The week of greyhound racing concludes in Hobart on Thursday night with another 10-race program featuring heats for the Dennis Collis Memorial. It wasn’t a program where I was able to find a special but the red runner in the first race appears good value. Mike Clarke's Betting Plan for the evening:... Race 1 - NANNY IN TOWN (1) 2 units to WIN Race 2 - ALL ABOUT MONTY (8) 1 unit to WIN Race 3 - RALEIGH (2) 1 unit to WIN Race 4 - ATTITUDE PLUS (2) 1 unit to WIN Race 5 - BUFFET BARON (8) 1 unit to WIN Race 6 - WHITE POISON (2) 2 units to WIN Race 7 - BRIDWOOD MARSHAL (2) 2 units to PLACE Race 8 - JUST MERCY (3) 2 units to PLACE Race 9 - ROCKETTE LEE (6) 1 unit to WIN. 1 unit to PLACE. Race 10 - OUTLAW TEDDY (3) 2 units to WIN

14.01.2022 A year ago, Youngtown trainer Francis Frank Feeney was struggling to walk 200 metres on a walking frame, but his love for racing and his renewed interest in gaining his greyhound trainers license once again has seen his health improve. The trainer is now up and about and was recently in the winner’s circle in Launceston earlier this month when Tintern Abby scored at her second start for the Feeney kennel. The trainer is not only enjoying being back involved in the sport, bu...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Fresh off training five winners in Devonport on Friday, leading trainer Anthony Bullock will be hoping his winning run continues in Launceston on Monday night. The trainer is well represented across the 10-race card that gets underway at 19:35. Bullock puts the polish on Lucky Lynn who is the narrow favourite in the first quaddie leg, the Kennel Talk Podcast with Matt and Brennan Grade 4.... The Fernando Bale Alotta Luck bitch has won two of her last four starts, with the most recent win in Launceston three starts ago where she scored in 16.16s from box five, one box wider than she has on Monday night. The race sees seven of the eight runners $11 or under including kennel mates Roulette who has won three of seven attempts at the track and distance, and Ryan Keeping who won two starts ago. Bullock has four of the eight runners in race six where I’m A Dominator looks hard to beat from box one. The Dyna Double One Dominator Girl dog has had three starts off the red box in Launceston for one win and two-second placings. He was fourth in a Devonport Chase heat three starts back and chased home Savage Victor in Devonport last Tuesday before breaking through for a deserved win on Friday afternoon in 25.80 from box one. His main danger is kennel mate Lily Lola from box eight, and she was placed on the track from box seven last week. Punters also believe Bullock will play a strong hand in race nine with Gypsies Luck and Tah Rosie. Gypsies Luck has drawn box three and will find this easier than the Group 3 Devonport Chase Final that she contested last week. She drops back to a Grade 4 event over 278 metres and is the only runner in the field to have broken 5.00s for her first split. Tah Rosie has drawn the red and has won at her only try off the inside box in Launceston in the past and goes into the race after being runner up behind Negotiator, and It’s Fletch her last two efforts. Bullock has prepared 185 winners this year and has a top three strike rate of 40%.

14.01.2022 In this week’s edition of FORMPLUS Black Bookers, Mike Clarke found a pair of runners from last Thursday’s Hobart meeting that may have not been obvious to most, but on Monday in Launceston a placegetter from the Derby heats picked himself. 13.01.2022 It has been six weeks since the last trotters race in Tasmania, but there are another three trotters that have made their way across Bass Strait for Friday night’s event, which is the last of eight-races in Hobart. Two of the trotters have found their way into the Rodney Ashwood stable including Mascott, who is no stranger to Tasmanian punters, with the Majestic son gelding having three starts in the state last year. But the trotter produced poor manners and broke in all thre...e starts and was sent back to Victoria where he had a further six starts including a win at Bendigo in early May. Friday is his first start back since 11 May. The other addition to the Rodney Ashwood Stable is Truscott Hall, the winner of 14 races, the most recent win was off a 30-metre handicap in a rating 30 or better event at a Saturday night meeting at Globe Derby in mid-September. Lucky Pats Son is the other new trotting arrival in the state and joins the Taylor Ford stable. The winner of five races has been out of the winner’s circle since November last year but did contest a metropolitan event five starts ago. Those three make up three of the seven runners contesting Friday night’s field with three clear at the top of early betting. Bagdad trainer Deborah Williams puts the polish on last start winner Cold Crusher (pictured) who has won five races in the state, four of those being under mobile start conditions. The Fling It gelding is the track record holder for the 2090-metre trip in Hobart, recording 2m 0.7s in December last year. Williams also prepares Sunoflindenny who hasn’t been seen since 23 August and is yet to win in seven attempts in Hobart but has been placed on five occasions. Trainer Marc Butler is represented in the race by Armchair Drive and One Yankee Ginga. Armchair Drive has never missed a top-two finish in six Hobart Starts, while One Yankee Ginga has won five of his 11 starts in the Apple Isle but has never been placed in seven mobile starts in his 55-start career. The additional trotters in the state are a vote of confidence for trots racing going forward. Tasracing will program two trotting races each month under Tasracing’s new program guidelines, with 25% of those being mobile start races worth a minimum $6,800 in prizemoney per race. Friday night’s Sky Racing 2 meeting will be live streamed on TasracingTV from 17:47.

13.01.2022 The interest of all participants in Australian greyhound racing will be focused solely upon Wentworth Park in Sydney on Friday night with the final of the GRNSW Million Dollar Chase over 520 metres. It has taken three years for the industry at large to fully understand the concept of the new feature race. Having regional qualifiers across the country tracks in New South Wales has generated a whole new feel about greyhound racing, with those small towns benefiting from the inc...Continue reading

12.01.2022 When you are the state’s leading rider, a solitary winner across the previous three meetings constitutes somewhat of a lean patch but David Pires appears well-placed to be back in the winner’s list on Sunday on Hobart. Pires went close to a feature win on Wednesday in Launceston aboard Mandela Effect in the Listed Newmarket Handicap, flashing home late to finish second behind Gee Gee Secondover. I got bottled up and I couldn’t get out, but I was really happy with the way he ...ran home, said Pires with the gelding likely to attempt a repeat of his 2019 Conquering Stakes triumph next start. Pires rides in all seven races on Sunday with three of those coming for leading trainer Scott Brunton who appears likely to have several favoured runners across the program. Brunton saddles up three in the opening race of the day, two of which faced each other at their first and only previous start, Hellot and We Deserve This. He’s a really nice up and coming horse, the further he goes the better he will be, David Pires said about Hellot who finished 2.5 lengths behind We Deserve This in a maiden won by another Brunton runner Lady Foxwedge. He’s half a chance with the right run but he’s still very new and could do a little bit wrong which could bring him unstuck, Pires added. In the second two-year-old race of the season Pires retains the ride on Fighting Styx who was a beaten favourite when finishing third a fortnight ago. She got a little bit lost when I put her under pressure. Hopefully she will improve on that and I’ve drawn a nice barrier, said Pires on the Fighting Sun River Styx filly who was sent out a $2 favourite on debut. Pires rates two of his best chances as coming up in Sunday’s quadrella’s legs including Stefanidi for trainer Ian Hay. I’ll probably be worse than midfield, but she seems to run home really well, and she’s won down in Hobart. She obviously handles the track and I think she’s probably one of my better rides of the day, said Pires on the 4YO mare who contested a $50,000 Tasbred race last start. Vallabar is Pires’ final ride in the last race of the day and she will only need to repeat her last start effort where she was a dominant winner. He’s drawn well, hopefully he’ll sit behind them and if he does what he did last start he will just beat them again. Pires has been back in the saddle for just over 12 months following an extended lay-off through injury and is hopeful that his home track will bring a change in fortune from Wednesday night. I was dirty after Wednesday night, I just wanted to get out of there and look ahead. I’ve got some nice rides on paper (Sunday), with a bit of luck I could have a really good day.

12.01.2022 Seven heats of the Ladbrokes Classic headline the meeting in Devonport on Tuesday. It’s a series restricted to grade four and five greyhounds with the heat winners and one fastest second placegetter going through to the final next week. The series had plenty of depth last year with accomplished sprinter, Hello Lenny the eventual winner and this year’s line-up appears no different with many experienced runners competing against some up and coming chasers. Flexing, for trainer ...Eileen Thomas, is one of the young dogs stepping up in grade to take on a handy field in heat five after a very impressive effort on the track last week. The fawn daughter of Zambora Brockie Zipping Spice turned two years old in January and brought up her third win since arriving in the state just a month ago. She faces some tough opposition including Attitude Plus, who is also a recent arrival from Victoria, and has recorded some fast times on the Hobart track. The Gary Johnson-trained sisters, Buckle Up Aryen and Buckle Up Havana are part of the new brigade and both look to have good winning chances in their respective heats after recent wins on the track. They are part of the promising Senor Slamma Miss Myra litter that the Johnson family bred after having success with both the sire and dam during their race careers. Trainer Wayne Williams will be well represented by his experienced chasers It’s Phyllis and Fernie in heats two and three. The four-year-old littermates are in good form after winning on the Devonport track earlier this month. The daughters of Fernando Bale Push It have combined for 154 starts and over $50,000 in prizemoney. It promises to be a great day of racing with the first race to be run at 12:12. Watch all the action on Sky Racing 1 and on the TasracingTV live stream.

11.01.2022 Harness racing heads to Carrick Park on Sunday afternoon for the first of three meetings over the summer months at the popular country venue with nine races on the card and there is plenty to look forward to. Race four is the first of two heats of the Bramich Bulldozing Trainers Incentive, where Bridport based trainers Kate MacLeod and Rohan Hadley play a firm hand. Bandbox heat winner Machbev (Pictured) represents MacLeod in the race for horses with less than $25,000 in priz...emoney earnings that are trained by trainers who have won 10 or fewer races this season. The daughter of Mach Three has won two of her starts and should appreciate a drop back in class after running sixth in the Group 2 Bandbox Final at her last outing. Hadley trains and drives Auntie Connie who has drawn barrier three and is another dropping back from the Bandbox series where she was only 15.3 metres behind Blame It On Me in the $50,000 final, this is her third start for her current preparation. Conor Crook will take the reins on the other Hadley trained runner in the race, Heza Sport, who still hasn’t got out from last start where he sat three back the pegs. In Heat Two, the Leigh Rand Ben Parker combination will be chasing another win when they team up with four-year-old mare Aussie Rock. The pacer is second-up today after a strong second placing in Burnie last time out when coming from back in the field in a race that was suited to those up on the speed. Two starts ago the mare showed good speed to lead from the pole and no doubt Parker will try and position the mare in a forward position. Other highlights on the Carrick Park card included the Rohan Hillier trained two-year-old debutant Tommy Hillfigure in race three. The A Rocknroll Dance gelding is a half-brother to Ryley Major and has won three of his four trials to date, with two of those victories coming on the Carrick Park track. The quaddie starts in race five, a rating 60 to 70 event where Racketeers Boy will be chasing his third win in the state since arriving from New Zealand. Trained and driven by Troy Hillier, the Rocknroll Hanover gelding is on a path to next month’s Golden Apple. His dangers today include recent Hobart trial winner Watchmylips who has built up an impressive record of four wins and three placings from seven starts, while Somedan must be respected from the front row draw. The meeting commences at 15:55, and the first three races will be shown on Sky Racing 2 with the last six on Sky Racing 1.

11.01.2022 Young driver Bronte Miller has only been race driving for a couple of months but already has two wins to her credit and has placed in over a quarter of her 34 starts. Bronte will be at Carrick Park on Sunday with a few good each-way chances to add to her winning tally. Duncan Dornauf spoke with Bronte leading into the meeting to record the From the Stables podcast.

10.01.2022 We head to Hobart for an eight-event program on Friday night for what looks an even card on paper where the best of the night goes around in race seven being Murry who drops a long way down in class. The trot promises to be a competitive affair but I’m happy to back Cold Crusher and hope he brings his A game. Early in the night, Kermadec looks a good gamble along with along with Jakes a Joy in race two.... Jamie Cockshutt's Suggested Bets for the evening: Race 1 - 3 units to win on KERMADEC (3) Race 2 - 3 units to win on JAKES A JOY (2) Race 3 - 3 units to win on DAMITSAM (9) and VICTORIA PASS (10) Race 4 - 3 units to win on REIGN OF PAIN (9) and 1 unit to win on THE SHADY ONE (8) Race 5 - 2 units each-way on SHESTRYINGTACTICS (8) Race 6 - 4 units to win on GIPSY TREASURE (5) Race 7 - 5 units to win on MURRY (7). BEST BET Race 8 - 4 units to win on COLD CRUSHER (5)

09.01.2022 You’re not in it to make money, you’re just in it to go to the races and have a good time with your mates. Richard Robinson, the man affectionately known as ‘Bear’, has been fortunate enough to part own some very talented horses including last season’s joint Ladbrokes Horse of the Year winner The Inevitable, but it’s the mateship of owning horses that keeps him coming back for more. Racing has been part of Tasmanian life for well over 150 years.... We’re proud of our racing history, and what racing means for our future. 09.01.2022 There is always a lot of questions that get answered in the Tasmanian Horse Transport Show Cup, and some will be answered in this year’s running on Sunday night in Launceston. Many horses are having their first try behind the tapes in the 2200-metre standing start event, while some others are very early into their spring campaign and punters are still working out where those horses are at. One horse who is having his first standing start race is progressive talent The Shallow...s, who had his first start in open class racing on 20 September when running an impressive second behind Call Me Hector in track-record time in Launceston, and trainer-driver Heath Woods was happy with the four-year-old gelding’s effort. You are never really sure how they will go till they get to that company, but I was wrapped with his time, he travelled well in the run and he ran his usual honest race, he proved he is up to that level, said Woods about the effort. Woods is pleased how the pacer has come through that run and is confident the gelding has good standing start manners after qualifying for standing start races in a Hobart trial back in February. He is good at home and in the trial, he was safe, he didn’t ping away, but I didn’t want to rev him up, he is a good pacer and I expect him to be alright, explained the trainer-driver. One of his main dangers is Lip Reader who will start from the front mark. The Rohan Hillier-trained and driven pacer is also having his first standing start race and goes into the event after finishing third behind Call Me Hector and The Shallows last start, where he recorded the fastest individual last half mile on the Tasracing Calculated sectionals since they were recorded in December 2015. Scooterwillrev won in Hobart last start and the handicapper has allocated him 10 metres and he shares that mark with 2018 Show Cup winner Full Speed Ahead and last year’s Tasmania Cup winner Shelby Bromac. Izaha is first-up since early February and hasn’t been seen in any recent trials. Lachlan Dakin will drive the pacer for Longford trainer Todd Rattray. The five-year-old entires last win was from a 30-metre handicap in Devonport three starts ago and he will start from a 20-metre handicap in Sunday’s race inside multiple track record holder Call Me Hector. The sole 30-metre handicapped runner is multiple Group 1 winner Ignatius who is having his second start back in Tasmania after a last start fourth. The Show Cup is race five on a nine-race card and is set down to be run at 19:33, with the opening race at 17:36.

09.01.2022 The greyhounds have the honour of commencing proceedings at the Devonport Showgrounds on Friday afternoon for the dual code meeting, the first race at 15:40. Perennial placegetter Adabelle lines up in race three and looks a good bet to run top three with around $1.60 on offer. Mike Clarke's Betting Plan for the afternoon:... Race 1 - MOSAIC CHARM (5) 1 unit to WIN Race 2 - LYNCAR BLUE BOY (3) 1 unit to WIN Race 3 - ADABELLE (7) 3 units to PLACE Race 4 - I'M A DOMINATOR (1) 1 unit to WIN Race 5 - WINKLEE MAGIC (2) 1 unit to PLACE Race 6 - DEFINITE SIGNS (3) 1 unit to WIN Race 7 - SHIFFRIN (7) 1 unit to WIN

09.01.2022 Toorak Affair took all before her last season, but her trainer Michael Trinder says the mare has returned to racing better than ever. And who could argue with the 71-year-old veteran mentor after Toorak Affair made it successive weight-for-age victories when she outgunned archrival Mandela Effect in the $100,000 Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Stakes over 1600m in Launceston on Friday. The veteran trainer believes his stable star has returned to racing better than ever and can win su...ccessive Ladbrokes Hobart cups. Toorak Affair won last season’s Hobart Cup at the end of a brilliant run of victories leading to the Group 3 event. I was just hoping she would come back with similar form to last season but, believe it or not, she is better, Trinder said. I still ride the mare in trackwork, so I know how well she is going. I had her first-up in the Newmarket Handicap and thought she could win, and she went very close and then she came out and won the Conquering Stakes at weight-for-age over 1400m. Today she was probably a bit dour, but still had what it took to run down Mandela Effect and that’s no mean feat because he is a very good horse. Mandela Effect was third-up from a spell and was backed into favouritism as he was the winner if the race last season and he was third-up at his pet distance of 1600m. Mandela Effect forged to the lead in the home straight and looked set to win but he was unable to withstand Toorak Affair’s powerful finish with Anthony Darmanin aboard. The mare will now go to the Summer Cup that is a weight-for-age race over 2200m in Hobart in a fortnight and that should have her spot-on for the Hobart Cup two weeks later. Trinder also saddled up Liffeybeau to win the Winzenberg Trophy over 1100m. Liffeybeau settled fifth in the field of six, but one-off with cover, while Gee Gee Lanett set the speed with the favourite Street Tough on her outside to the home turn. But when rider Troy Baker asked Liffeybeau for an effort, Trinder’s seven-year-old quickly gathered in the leaders and shot three lengths clear and staved off the fast-finishing Blaze Forth to win by over a length with Balearic edging the favourite Street Tough out of third place.

09.01.2022 Talented weight-for-age galloper Blaze Forth delivered an outstanding performance at the trials in Longford on Tuesday morning to suggest he could again be competitive in all the weight-for-age events during this season’s Ladbrokes Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival. Blaze Forth scampered over the 700-metre trial leading throughout and hit the line almost two lengths clear of Gee Gee Caughtya with White Cliffs powering home a half-length astern. The John Blacker-trained gelding... won the Listed Conquering Stakes (1400m) last season and was very competitive in most of the other sprint and 1600-metre races he contested. I could not be happier with how this horse has come on this time in and we are really looking forward to seeing what he can do this season, Blacker said after the trial. The horse is really good in himself and he was on his toes today and looking forward to getting amongst it and that’s a real good sign. Blaze Forth is likely to ignite his campaign in the Goodwood Handicap in Hobart on Melbourne Cup day. The Newmarket Handicap will be run in Launceston at the end of November and it is likely to boast most of the state’s best sprinters including last season’s outstanding three-year-old Deroche that also is expected to make her first appearance in the Goodwood.

09.01.2022 The first of two harness meetings this weekend in Tasmania is held in Hobart on Friday night with eight races scheduled. Trainer/driver Samantha Gangell is in the top 10 on the drivers Premiership table and has a hand in several runners through the night. Gangell discussed her chances with Duncan Dornauf in an edition of From the Stables.

08.01.2022 The Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale will be held for the first time at Quercus Park at Carrick on Monday and the draft assembled could set new records. For those unfamiliar with Quercus Park, it is the venue for Agfest, considered one of the best agricultural four-day shows in the Southern hemisphere. The Tasmanian sale has continued to produce star sprinters and stayers and this season is no exception.... Glenn Stevenson’s Turk Warrior has dominated two-year-old ranks as he is unbeaten from three starts including the $100,000 Elwick Stakes and $150,000 Gold Sovereign, while three-year-old Swoop Dog from the John Blacker stable won two $100,000 stakes races before finishing a gallant third in the Tasmanian Derby. Ever since The Cleaner, a $10,000 purchase at the 2009 Tasmanian Magic Millions sale, took his trainer, the late Mick Burles, on a ride of a lifetime that led to two appearances in the Cox Plate, the Tasmanian sale has been a must attend for locals and interstate trainers and owners alike. Inaugural $5 million All-Star Mile winner Mystic Journey, from the Adam Trinder stable, sold for only $11,000 at the 2017 sale and she has gone on to amass just under $4 million in prizemoney. And Still a Star, purchased for only $13,000 at the 2018 sale, has so far won about $370,000 in stakes from her seven wins and five placings from only a dozen starts and she could be Tasmania’s next entrant in the All-Star Mile. The move from the Inveresk sale yards to Quercus Park has been intense but organisers say the venue is ready and waiting and that it will further enhance the image of the sale. One youngster sure to attract plenty of interest Lot 106, a half-brother to this season’s star two-year-old Turk Warrior (main picture). The son of Zululand-Ehor was the centre of attention at a recent open day at Grenville Stud and spirited bidding is expected for this striking bay colt. Armidale Stud has another top draft with a filly (Lot 89) by Alpine Eagle from Burnished that is expected to easily reach her reserve and a colt (Lot 104 by Impending from Dream Food) also is expected to attract strong bidding. Yearlings can be inspected from Friday at noon and each day leading up to the sale on Monday, 22 February.

08.01.2022 Turk Warrior may have set the benchmark for the state’s two-year-olds when he scored an emphatic win on debut in the Tony Carrick 2YO Vase over 1000 metres in Hobart on Sunday. The Glenn Stevenson-trained gelding joined the race leader Neutralize on the home turn and when rider Ismail Toker asked for an effort, he quickly collared the leader and went on to score comfortably from Neutralize ($3.20) with the Cameron Thompson-trained Coeur De Lyon ($31) a distant third. Turk War...rior ($3.90) had two trials before making his debut and Stevenson was expecting the son of Outreach to win. There is an air of expectancy with two-year-olds that show ability from day one, but a bit of uncertainty also creeps into the equation because race pressure can make horses act differently, Stevenson said. I am absolutely rapt with this horse and to travel all the way to Hobart from Wesley Vale for his first look at the Hobart track and do what he did, makes me think we might have something a bit special. The rider also was full of praise for the gelding that is owned by his uncle Sayit Basol. I was very proud of him today because he had to travel a big way and race on a track that he had never seen but he handled it like a real professional, Toker said. When he was chasing the leader, he felt great and always in control, but when he hit the front, he got a bit lost. It was a very good win for his first start, and I think he has a very good future. The runner-up was game in defeat and will benefit from the outing, while Coeur De Lyon and fourth-placed Champagne Cinders ($5) also will take benefit from the experience. Stevenson said Turk Warrior would be sent for a short spell and return for the better feature two-year-old races in January-February.

06.01.2022 Tanya Hanson forms part of a training partnership with her father Ken based in Longford in the north of the state. Hanson will bring a pair of last start winners down to Hobart today and discussed their chances with Peter Staples in an edition of From the Stables.

06.01.2022 Team Wells will take five to the Hobart meeting on Saturday with Dean or Trent to travel three down from Spreyton while the patriarch of the team, Leon, will float two from the Brighton yard. Leon will saddle up Gee Gee Cloudy Bay in the opening race on the seven-event card, a maiden over 1200m and Gee Gees Doubleyou in the class one handicap (1100m) for what will be her first start since injuring her hip in a race in Hobart almost two years ago. I think Gee Gee Cloudy Bay c...ould sneak a place in the opening race, but the jury is still out on that mare, Leon Wells said. I am looking forward to seeing Doubleyou back racing because she possesses good ability but has been off the scene for a long time and will no doubt need the run. She is very talented, and it wouldn’t surprise me if she ran a bottler, but she had to start somewhere and this race looked as good as any. Gee Gees Doubleyou only had three starts before she was injured in a race in Hobart, the start after she won her maiden impressively in Launceston two years ago to the day. The Spreyton stable tenants are Miss Enthusiasm in a Tasbred Bonus race over 1100m, Gee Gees Saint Nik in the 1600-metre benchmark 60 and Gee Gee Pureblonde in the class 3 handicap over 1400m. Trent Wells says all three from his and Dean’s yard are expected to perform well. Miss Enthusiasm is in her right race and her last-start third was good enough to suggest she is ready to win, Trent Wells said. Our apprentice Peter Lui will be instructed to ride her forward as that will give her the best chance of winning. He rides the other two, but he has instructions to make up his own mind in those races as to how they are ridden. Saint Nik has been consistent at the back end of his campaign and he deserves another win and gets into a winnable race. Pureblonde is a horse that can be ridden on the speed or from back in the field with the latter my preference, but there is no natural speed in the race, so we will leave it up to Pete (Lui). It is the last race of the day so if there is any bias shown from the track we can adjust to suit.

05.01.2022 The third thoroughbred program in the space of eight days will be run in Hobart on Sunday where seven races are scheduled. There are some nice types engaged headlined by 3YO First Accused who takes on the older horses in a benchmark 66. We will learn a bit more about the redeveloped Hobart track on Sunday with the rail in the +15m position for the first time.... Matt Reid's Staking Strategy for the day: Race 1 - 1 unit to win and 2 units to place on Reddisun (2) Race 2 - 1 unit to win on Turk Warrior (2) Race 3 - 1 unit to win on both Stowport Road (10) and Innocent Pegg (6) Race 4 - 2 units to win on Sardegna Deel (5) Race 5 - 2 units to win on both Hot Wired (1) and Stefanidi (7) Race 6 - 5 units to win on First Accused (3) and 2 units to win on Little River Boy (4) Race 7 - 1 unit each-way on Born Magic (1)

04.01.2022 We head up to Devonport for a seven-event card on Friday night. It looks a tough night for punters with Lip Reader the best of the night despite going back to the 10m mark. Victoria Pass is aiming to make five wins in a row and there is no reason why he can’t.... Altana Blue looks one of the better value plays of the night along with My Ultimate Romeo. Jamie Cockshutt's Suggested Bets for the evening: Race 1 - 3 units to win on NAVUA PIXIE (7) Race 2 - 3 units to win on RAINING ON RINGO (10) and 2 units to win on HESNOPRINCE (8) Race 3 - 6 units to win on LIP READER (7) Race 4 - 2 units to win on both ALTANA BLUE (7) and WANDARY MUSCAT (2) Race 5 - 2 units to win on both SHESTRYINGTACTICS (7) and MY ULTIMATE ROMEO (8) Race 6 - 4 units to win on VICTORIA PASS (9) Race 7 - 3 units to win on AUNTY BESSY (4) and 1 unit to win on MOSTLY SPIRIT (7)

04.01.2022 Greyhound racing continues in Hobart on Thursday night for a 10-race program that sees the evening start with last week’s Devonport Breeders Classic winner, Recall. The best bet of the night comes up in race 8 with Connected appearing very well placed from the inside and dropping back in grade. Mike Clarke's Betting Plan for the night:... Race 1 - RECALL (1) 2 units to WIN Race 2 - ALL ON ME (5) 1 unit to WIN Race 3 - LILY LOLA (4) 2 units to WIN Race 4 - RUSTY THE CROW (4) 1 unit to WIN Race 5 - BOORALITE (2) 2 units to PLACE Race 6 - RIVERGUM CHIEF (2) 2 units to PLACE Race 7 - VINTAGE FAME (2) 2 units to WIN Race 8 - CONNECTED (2) 4 units to WIN Race 9 - HE’S A MINSTREL (8) 1 unit to WIN Race 10 - FAWN MISTAKE (1) 1 unit to WIN

04.01.2022 Mike Clarke’s FORMPLUS Black Book team have started 2021 with a bang. Three winners on Monday night with Family Spark paying $5.50 on her Launceston debut after he suggested the track would suit following some nice Hobart efforts. Mike backed up in Devonport with just the one runner engaged, Leica Bomber, who got the job done in race 7. Mike has a big team of Black Bookers running in Launceston on Monday, so make sure you sign-up to FORMPLUS Alerts and don’t miss a race - https://buff.ly/3hQRUXT

04.01.2022 It was a good night for the Betting Plan on Monday night in Launceston, recording a profit of around 10 units including the Cup winner Wynburn Sheean. Attention quickly turns to Devonport on Tuesday where we have another 10-race card with seven heats of the Ladbrokes Classic highlighting the program. The first race of the afternoon is scheduled for 12:12.... Mike Clarke's Betting Plan: Race 1 - THIRD DAY (3) 1 unit to WIN Race 2 - NITRO SPRINGS (5) 2 units to PLACE Race 3 - LUCKY JEMMA (7) 1 unit to PLACE. TERRAIN (6) 1 unit to PLACE Race 4 - BUCKLE UP KENZIE (2) 1 unit to WIN Race 5 - DOUBLE BREEZE (6) 2 units to PLACE Race 6 - BUCKLE UP HAVANA (6) 2 units to WIN Race 7 - LEVI (2) 1 unit to PLACE Race 8 - CHARLIE SPARKLES (7) 2 units to PLACE Race 9 - STYLISH HUGH (8) 2 units to PLACE Race 10 - IT’S FLETCH (6) 1 unit to WIN

04.01.2022 The build up to the Greyhound Data Tasmanian Derby and Sires on Ice Tasmanian Oaks starts in Launceston on Monday night, with two heats for the Derby. The Oaks will go straight into a Final next week but the Derby is certainly not lacking in quality with some excellent performers engaged. The two Derby heats are races four and five on a program that gets underway at 19:31. Mike Clarke's betting plan for the night:... Race 1 - HIGHLAND CHIEF (5) 2 units to WIN Race 2 - WHITE POISON (4) 2 units to WIN Race 3 - MY BOY WINLOCK (1) 1 unit to WIN Race 4 - KINTYRE (6) 2 units to WIN Race 5 - HIGHLAND FAME (2) 1 unit to WIN Race 6 - LILY LOLA (5) to WIN with DEWANA MACCA (1)/I’M A DOMINATOR (2) to finish second and third. Race 7 - BOUND FOR BLUE (7) 2 units to WIN Race 8 - AMY CORA (5) 1 unit to WIN Race 9 - BUCKLE UP NOLA (3) 1 unit to WIN Race 10 - CALL ME IAN (1) 1 unit to WIN

04.01.2022 The Glenn Stevenson-trained Red Roger looms as one of the best bets on the eight-event card in Devonport on Monday with the lightly raced four-year-old coming off an impressive maiden win at Longford on New Year’s Day. Red Roger progresses to a maiden-class one over 1650m. Red Roger impressed in winning at Longford on New Year’s Day, after which his trainer suggested the gelded son of Mawingo was capable of collecting a few wins quickly and that he would be even better over m...ore ground. The gelding showed speed to lead at Longford from an inside gate and despite being taken on for much of the race he found when placed under extreme pressure in the home straight to win comfortably. I am a big rap for Red Roger and expected to put the shades (blinkers) on him when we stepped him up in distance, but I’ve opted to keep them off for this run but will more than likely apply them in the future, Stevenson said. Stevenson also saddles up Lesnar that is backing up from a second on the synthetic on Devonport Cup day (6 January). Lesnar is tough and he will have no trouble backing up from last Wednesday. He has finished second at his past two, but I reckon he gets his chance to win on Monday because he pulled up really well and he gets some weight relief with Codi (Jordan) taking three kilograms off. Stevenson also has Rhyme Writer engaged in the benchmark 60 handicap over 1150m and he expects an improved effort from the four-year-old. Rhyme Writer had issues during the winter, but he’s been well this time in and should be suited if there is a hot pace and that’s what I expect with Kohima and Little River Boy in the race. Stevenson says Lesnar and Red Roger are his two best winning chances.

03.01.2022 Star Western Australian greyhound Tommy Shelby has arrived in Tasmania ahead of this month’s Hobart Thousand, the only Group 1 race staged across the three codes in Tasmania. The Steve Withers-trained chaser has been campaigning on the eastern states of Australia in recent months and has been amongst the placegetters in many Group 1 races. Tommy Shelby was third behind the Tasmanian bred Handsome Prince in the Million Dollar Chase at Wentworth Park in October and was third in... Friday night’s Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park behind Hard Style Rico. Part-owner Kira Withers announced the chaser had arrived in Tasmania when speaking on Western Australia’s TAB Radio on Monday. Hobart was never on our radar, but Kel Greenough suggested it to Steve as they were getting in the car (to go to the Melbourne Cup) and the flights were booked before he went around in the Cup, said Kira. Steve (Withers) has gone down with him, if he came home (to Western Australia) he would have to quarantine for 14-days, added the part-owner. Tommy Shelby and Steve Withers are staying with Tasmanian trainer Shane Whitney. The Fernando Bale Serena Fly High dog is named after a character from Netflix series Peaky Blinders and his owners have been donating 10 percent of the greyhounds’ prize money to different charities every month. The W.A star has won 21 of his 32 starts with $236,905 in prizemoney. This year’s Hobart Thousand is building up to be a bumper series and those wishing to attend the final night are reminded that the race night is a ticketed only event, and they can be purchased at goracingtasmania.com.au. You can follow Tommy Shelby during his Tasmanian stay on social media. His Twitter handle is @Thepeoplesdog while on Facebook you can give the Tommy Shelby page a like. Closer to home, Greyhound racing returns to Devonport on Tuesday for an eight-race card. Track specialist Leica Prayer has drawn box two in race seven the ladbrokes.com.au Invitation over 452 metres. The Jill Stamford-trained chaser has won 14 of her 25 starts on the Devonport track, and her most recent win was five starts ago on 25 July. Tuesdays eight-race card commences at 13.06.

02.01.2022 21 weeks ago a spectacular three-horse fall took place in Launceston and two of the horses involved have found the winners circle nine days apart. On Sunday Major Davvin (pictured) scored his first win since the accident when he led all the way at Carrick Park. Major Davvin was rushed to the Longford Equine Clinic straight after the fall on 5 July.... He knocked an artery up between his back legs, the vet on course couldn’t stem the bleeding, so he was rushed off course to the Longford Equine Clinic to be operated on, said the pacers trainer Steven Davis. He had 26 stitches up there to sew him back up and he had another six stitches in a wound down his hamstring, and he also had an open puncture wound on his flank that was probably a couple of inches deep where one of the broken sulkies dug into him explained the trainer who also took the reins in Sunday’s win. His first run back from the fall they got a bit tight on him near the 400 metres, and he wanted to get back out of it. At Burnie his next start he was a bit better so the run at Carrick, even though he was out on his own it will add to his confidence, said Davis. Driver Adrian Duggan was replacing Steven Davis in the sulky on the night of the fall in Launceston, as Davis had to care for another horse on his property. Duggan is still recovering from the fall and can now commence shadow walking with his crutches. I saw the surgeon on Monday and he said that I can start putting a little bit of weight on it (fractured ankle) over the next fortnight and start to build up the pressure gradually, said Duggan. Duggan made the trip to Hobart on Monday evening to watch his 15-year-old son Jacob have his first trial drive. Rockandahardplace who was also involved in the fall bounced back into the winner’s list in Burnie on 20 November. It was probably a good four weeks after the fall until he was right to go again, said Rockandahardplace’s trainer Kent Rattray. He took a chunk out of his shoulder about the size of a tennis ball, and we just had to keep that clean. More than anything it rattled him about and John Walters said when he drove him his first few starts back that he could feel him a little bit nervy with the horses around him and that he was looking at everything, it has taken a good three months from him to be back near where he was, explained the trainer. Rockandahardplace was driven to his Burnie victory by Kent son’s Wade, with connections taking home the second half of their $10,000 Tasbred Bonus. The fall on 5 July occurred after Canbe Doc broke stride and fell soon after the start. Connections retired Canbe Doc from racing after the incident and the former pacer found a new home through Tasracing’s Off the Track Program.

02.01.2022 Feature racing action in Tasmania returns to Ladbrokes Park Hobart this Thursday night with six heats of the prestigious Dennis Collis Memorial Classic series highlighting the 10-event program. Now in its fifth year running, a Grade 5 restricted series held over the 461 metres, the memorial feature honours one of Hobart Greyhound Racing Club’s most liked characters and long serving employees, Dennis Collis. Dennis held the position of HGRC judge and served the role for over 3...3-years going over countless photo finishes. His involvement with Hobart began firstly through a workmate at CIG in Vic Derrick, who happened to be the Assistant Judge at the T.C.A. to Ted Freeman who was judge at the club from 1947 to 1981. Dennis started sharing the role as Assistant before taking it over himself when Ted retired in 1982. Dennis was a remarkable and very accurate judge because he had a great knowledge of his position and knew what was expected of him and his team at each and every greyhound meeting. Social Distance, trained by Blake Pursell at Brighton, appears as one of the leading chances jumping from box eight in heat two on the strength of recent performances in its last three career outings. The son of Black Magic Opal Belt Up Tubsy produced two big efforts starting in Devonport when beating Willies Falls by almost seven lengths and then went on to score his first victory on the Hobart track at his fourth career run. A repeat of recent efforts and with a clear run from the wide draw should see the chaser figure prominently. Dilston trainer Patrick Ryan has only one runner engaged on the program in Supreme Shadow who will most likely start at shorts odds, jumping from box four in the fifth qualifier of the Dennis Collis Memorial Classic heats. The son of Sh Avatar and See Blue’s Girl has won six of his 12 career starts and is currently racing well. Supreme Shadow hasn’t won at Hobart since February last year, but despite an interrupted campaign due to a dropped back muscle injury, he has bounced back to win three races from his last seven race starts. He was a worthy last start winner in Launceston in December running 30.29s jumping from box three. A personal best time of 26.08s for the 461m trip gives him the class edge and he should run a very good race. The six heat winners including the two fastest second placegetters will progress through to next week’s final. Thursday night’s Hobart greyhound program commences at 19.37, with all races live streamed on TasracingTV.

02.01.2022 We head up to Launceston for a good nine event card with the feature being the Tasmanian Horse Transport Show Cup which brings together a quality field of proven stars and some up and coming pacers. Ignatius will need to put up a huge performance if he is to get back into the winner’s circle coming off the back mark of 30m. The Shallows and Lip Reader have been racing through the classes and get the front line, but the query is the first time from behind the tapes. Then you a...dd Call Me Hector, Scooterwillrev and another rising star Izaha into the mix so it promises to be a must watch race. The Conor Crook-trained Loch Ness Franco looks one of the better bets on the card after an impressive first-up win in the state. Jamie Cockshutt's Suggested Bets for the evening: Race 1 - 5 units to win on MELODY BEACH (1) Race 2 - 2 units to win on BOLD CENTURIAN (8) and 1 unit each-way on JIMMY MISCHIEF (4) Race 3 - 2 units to win on MIA FROM MEMPHIS (11) and 1 unit each-way on THE FLOYD (9) Race 4 - 3 units to win on KOHANAH (9) and 1 unit to win on KIAVINO STRIDE (6) Race 5 - 2 units to win on THE SHALLOWS (3) and SCOOTERWILLREV (9) Race 6 - 4 units to win on SOMEDAN (2) Race 7 - 3 units to win on KADAR (4) and 2 units to win on SEMOWILLREV (4) Race 8 - 8 units to win on LOCH NESS FRANCO (12) Race 9 - 2 units to win on ONEFORTHELADS (6) and BLACK EIGHT (11)

02.01.2022 A few months back there were six-figure offers on the table for Tasmanian galloper Galenus while he was campaigning interstate, but when the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, the prospective buyers couldn’t commit. The Mandy Gunn-bred gelding has had three successive wins following a debut third in Launceston as a two-year-old but while at Patrick Payne’s stable for his Victorian campaign he impressed everyone who crossed his path. He had one start in Victoria for an effortless win ...in a benchmark 64 handicap over 1200 metres at Cranbourne with Billy Egan aboard, carrying 60.5 kilograms. Galenus is back home at Scott Brunton’s Seven Mile Beach stables and on Sunday he makes his return to racing in a Tasbred Bonus race over 1100 metres in Hobart. David Pires jumps aboard and from gate two in a small field of six, there probably won’t be any fancy odds bet about the son of Magnus, but he will go around at odds that will be better than bank interest. Brunton says Galenus is fit and well and gearing up for what he hopes will be a great summer. We have always had a good opinion of Galenus and his record exposes his ability but he has yet to be tested against the best we have in the state and hopefully he can measure up when we give him that opportunity, Brunton said. This will be a good test for him on Sunday because even though it’s a small field there is a lot of good form in the race. Galenus finished third to Deroche and Still a Star on debut in the $50,000 2YO Classic in May last year and at his subsequent start in a maiden in Launceston in October last year he almost dislodged rider Noel Callow when he sprawled after jumping awkwardly from the barriers. When Callow returned to the unsaddling enclosure after winning the race, he made one comment This horse could be a freak. Take the Sit (Brendon McCoull) defeats Runaway Girl (Siggy Carr) in the final race on 13 September. Galenus went on to win the 3YO Classic over 1200m on Launceston Cup day after which he was dispatched to Melbourne. On Sunday he comes up against Bill Ryan’s in-form pair in Red Letter Lady and Take the Sit, both of which have won two times from three starts this preparation. Take the Sit has won her past two in Devonport and horses she defeated in both races have since gone on to win (Gold Current and Runaway Girl). Red Letter Lady won first-up in Devonport defeating Lucky Roo in a maiden and she then went on to defeat Loki Patera in a class 1, with Loki Patera going on to win in Devonport last week. Add to the mix the Angela Brakey-trained White Cliffs that won three in succession last season before embarking on an unsuccessful interstate campaign. White Cliffs trialled well at Longford on Tuesday finishing an eye-catching third to Blaze Forth over 730 metres with Kyle Maskiell aboard but if it looks like being a rain-affected track he might not make the trip south.

01.01.2022 16 year old reinswoman Bronte Miller opened her winning account when she registered her first driving win at her ninth race drive in Hobart on Sunday night aboard the Ben Yole-trained Jakes A Joy. Settling well back in the field the pacer flew home out wide over the concluding stages to score by 10.1 metres over the stablemate One Of The Lads and Miller was pleased to notch up her first driving win. It was a very good feeling and I enjoyed it a lot, said Bronte about the wi...n. It was great the owners allowed me to drive Jakes A Joy even though there was no advantage of using a claim in the race and I’m glad I could reward them with a win, added the winning driver. Miller obtained her trial license earlier this year and only had her first race drive in Devonport earlier this month. Her interest in horses started at an early age. I was involved in the pony trots for a while, but I have been involved in Pony Club since I was four years old and I’m still doing it, she said. Her parents Clayton and Claire Miller have been involved in the industry training a few pacers and Bronte has always been around the horses, but it was while on school holidays last year that her interest and development in racing grew. During the school holidays this time last year I started working for Ben Yole during the weekends and holidays, and I have had his support along with his team, and without that, I don’t think I would be where I am now with my driving, explained Bronte. The year 10 student plans to continue with her education for years 11 and 12, with her current career aspirations already being considered. I’m thinking about teaching, but I hope to be involved with racing as a hobby, Bronte said. Bronte has had a total of 10 drives for one win and three placings and given the strength of female drivers across the driving ranks throughout Australia at present, who knows maybe more members of Pony Club associations will follow her into harness racing.

01.01.2022 Racing returns to Hobart on Sunday for the first time since 19 July. Check out the relevant track information ahead of the meeting.
