25.01.2022 Martha is smart! Be like Martha!

25.01.2022 Hands up who loves silkies? heres my beautiful girl Tinsel

25.01.2022 This poor bird was put to sleep this week. His beak was twisted out of shape and his legs bowed so badly that he couldnt run. He has been eking out an existenc...e for the past few years by being fed table scraps, dog food and chicken mince. He had metabolic bone disease. Metabolic bone disease in birds results in painful degenerative changes in the bones that result from nutritional imbalance and deficiencies. Imbalances of calcium, phosphorus, and Vitamin D3 can lead to soft or brittle beaks, claws and keel, bone fractures and enlarged parathyroid glands. If you talk to bird carers, and avian vets they will tell you that this is one of the biggest causes of euthanasia of black and white baby birds that come into care. What makes this so heartbreaking is that in many instances the reason for MBD is entirely preventable because it is due to humans feeding these birds or the birds parents when the bird is still in nest. If you are feeding mince, bread, seed, sausage, chicken or pet food to wild birds you may well be part of the problem. Human food is not natural for magpies and can make them sick. A natural diet for these birds consists of insects and small animals. We often hear I love my local maggies and feed them regularly. If you truly care then dont feed them regularly and dont feed them human foods. **** If you really want to help then a compost heap or worm farm can augment the natural food supply during these dry times and still bring these magnificent birds as visitors to your yard******

14.01.2022 *PSA TIME* I'm sure I've talked about this before, but I really need to talk about it again, because there are a LOT of people that need an education in ecology.... I really hope that what I write here will make people think. It is something I feel extremely passionate about, and I have a science/zoology degree so I am not just talking out my arse, but as someone who has had years of education in this field. INTRODUCED BIRDS I have had a large number of phone calls and enquiries lately regarding chicks that have been found, but not accepted by wildlife rescues such as Bonorong. There's a bloody good reason they won't accept them once they are confirmed to be an introduced species. Introduced species put the lives of native birds at risk. Starlings and kookaburras (yes, kookaburras are introduced in Tasmania) are well-known nest robbers. Both species nest in tree hollows and will kick out the occupants to keep that space for themselves. Both are aggressive, and will attack and kill other birds. Yes, that's right. Starlings will throw chicks and eggs out of nest hollows, and kookaburras do the same (and eat them). Starlings are classified as invasive for this reason, and rainbow lorikeets are also invasive for their aggressive behaviour towards natives. Blackbirds, turtledoves, sparrows, goldfinches and greenfinches are also introduced, but as they make their own nests, their biggest problem is stealing resources from natives such as food and nesting material. It's for these reasons I do not and will not take on introduced birds to raise, rehabilitate and release. I have in the past. But now I just can't bring myself to spend time and resources on a creature that is ultimately going to harm, either directly or not, a native bird's chances. We already have two endangered species of parrot, the Swift and the Orange-Bellied. Why would we risk endangering the entire species? If all lives matter, why do the native birds matter less? So do the right thing. If you have a confirmed introduced species, please TAKE IT TO THE VET. Don't try to raise it yourself, as it is something that requires training and more often than not, people who aren't trained in it end up killing the bird and prolonging its suffering. As a side note, I know that humans are destructive and cause more damage. Which is precisely why we should take responsibility for our fragile ecosystem and do what we can to help it. One of the worst ways we damage our environment is releasing species that don't belong in it. If everyone decided to release a starling or a kookaburra or a rainbow lorikeet, we would have thousands of the wrong birds in our environment, and that spells disaster for our natives, It's not the bird's fault, I know. It sucks. But we HAVE to take off the blinkers and see the bigger picture. It's not about you. It's not about me. It's about our ecosystem.

02.01.2022 Ellies learning to write the letter E and omg her little foot! It was her first time and she worked on this for 40 minutes today! ... Obviously teaching an animal how to write is a weird and slightly uncharted journey At the basis, there are motor skills that must be developed, things like touching the screen, tracing lines and curves, keeping her tongue in the screen, touching targets, tracing things in the right direction.... It reminds me of coaching and of basketball practice when I was a kid. The muscles and skills must be developed, but if we only ran in the same spot, or did thr exact same 1 exercise, wed get bored and the skills wouldnt develop fully. We ran up stairs and in the parking lot. We ran in the field and in the gym. We ran up bleachers. My girls have basic skills to develop, but sticking to the same letters or practices cause Ellie to walk away. Shes been learning (and is pretty good at) n, l, o, c, r, u, and t. But shes not perfect, shes doesnt write 100% on cue. And shes also started walking away from lessons. Shes engaging in more stereotypic behavior. She needs something harder :( Its a bit of a tough balance and a step in faith to say, "You dont have the last bit down, but were gonna keep going. Lets try something really hard." It feels counterintuitive to bring on more challenge when she hasnt perfected the last project. But then it seemed to me that these challenges are more akin to running on the grass, on the pavement, up the stairs, up the bleachers... You dont have to be perfect to run, youve just got to keep moving. Sooooo... I decided to begin teaching her e, which i think is probably the hardest letter! She worked in it for 40 minutes solid today - we practiced lines, circles, writing wizard tracing, and then free tracing. Shes not ready to do it by herself, but she was wagging her little tail feathers and hopping with excitement to have something new and hard! And my gut feeling was right! She was ready for it!

01.01.2022 Did you know some birds should not eat seed? Im often surprised by customers that have brought a bird and then never researched its nutritional requirements and only ask questions when the bird is having health problems or self mutilating. Birds of different species have different nutritional requirements to stay happy and healthy. Here is a great article on Asian parrots by Melbourne Bird Vet Article written by Melbourne Bird Vet - found on their website http://www.melbou...rnebirdvet.com/ Diet for Asian Parrots A common mistake in caring for Asian parrots is to feed too much dry seed. Dry seed alone is very high in fat while being low in protein and many essential vitamins and minerals. An Asian parrot fed entirely on dry seed can end up with multiple problems such as poor feathering, respiratory disease, fatty liver and diabetes. The best diet for an Asian parrot includes pellets, fruit and vegetables and smaller amounts of nuts, seeds and cooked meat. The diet we recommend be fed: High quality parrot pellets o These are low in fat, and high in vitamins and minerals that your bird needs. Pellets should form 50% of the diet. A range of fresh fruit and vegetables o These should always be available and provided fresh daily. o Some ideas peas, corn, broccoli, celery leaves, capsicum, carrot, spinach. Darker coloured vegies are generally more nutritious. o Sprouted seed is a great source of protein and vitamins for your bird sprout it yourself (ask us how!) or buy a sprout mix from your green grocer (crunch combo mix is good). o Any fruit or vegetable that we eat EXCEPT FOR avocado, onion and rhubarb. Fresh grass o Asian parrots appreciate fresh grasses and native plants, especially the seed heads. Milk thistle is also good for birds. o Flowers, branches and leaves from the common natives are safe to give your Asian parrot. They also provide entertainment for your bird. Animal Protein optional to provide small amounts of boiled egg and cooked meat. Fresh water always available and changed daily Treats good for training o These should be provided in small quantities only o Whole grain plain bread or toast, parrot seed mix, nuts, dried fruit, plain whole-grain crackers. Converting to Pellets tips and tricks Mix 50/50 with seed in the normal food bowl. Only provide enough food for 1 day 2-3 tablespoons of each. If seed is provided in excess of daily intake, your bird wont get hungry enough to try the pellets. Gradually reduce the amount of seed once your bird is eating the pellets. Try moistening the pellets and rolling into balls with seed as your bird picks at his favourite seeds some pellets will be eaten and he will get the taste of them. If your bird likes human food, pretend to eat the pellets yourself it may make them more appealing. Patience, patience, patience it may take several weeks before your Asian parrot willingly eats pellets.
