25.01.2022 The weather has been most kind since planting a large portion of tomato seedlings late October. Winds are down and night time temps much more conducive to early season Tomato growth compared to 2019. We are due some positives in 2020!! Growth outside is even comparable to those in the hothouse. I only had them covered for late October with Ag fleece. Today I put the string up in the indeterminate/ vining tomato bed and given a prune to leave 2 leaders. All varieties so far do...ing well but I have been particularly impressed by the health and growth of Isis Candy, black truffle and Cherokee red. In the bush Tom bed, flowers galore and legend and Oregon springs proving how robust they are. First year trying super Arctic cherry and the dwarf tomatoes. The dwarves certainly have strong stems. I planted a few more early November when I saw a decent 14 forecast, and usually I get a few late ones in early December but have broken that rule as the forecasts still are solid plus I have more fleece now to cover if a cold snap does hit. Happy growing.

21.01.2022 Perfect spring weather for the tomatoes roll on

19.01.2022 I do spoil my tomatoes. Seeing 70 kph north westerlies forecast is a worry. My property feels the NW winds. So up goes some shade cloth to reduce the potential wind damage.

19.01.2022 Strong winds tomorrow and Wednesday. Batten down the garden hatches

19.01.2022 The start of the garlic harvest.

16.01.2022 The Tassie purple garlic now braided. Just have the creoles and artichoke garlics to do in early Jan.

13.01.2022 Tomatoes need consistent night temperatures between 10C and 23C to set fruit. (A few varieties will set fruit at lower or higher temperatures - lower temps for eg: gold nugget, oregon springs, early Annie, Moskovich, stupice, legend, kotlas, siletz, olomovic and others). Temps of 5deg at night can delay growth by a few days, frost obviously does no favours. Blossom drop may occur in the spring if daytime temperatures are warm but night temps drop below 13 C. In the summer w...hen temperatures soar over 32 C. with nights over 24 C (rare in tas outside); again, the tomato plant will suffer damage to immature fruit or loss of flowers. Additionally, when nights become too warm, the pollen grains of the tomato flower begin to burst, thwarting pollination, hence no fruit set (seen in hothouse more than outside). This is doubly true when the air is saturated with relative humidity. For those growing in hothouse, use a thermometer to understand your temps and humidity over the warmer months. There are many varieties that handle temps better outside these ranges therefore selecting your tomato variety is the key and also growing a number of varieties. In Tassie, selecting cool climate varieties will boost your success.

11.01.2022 The growth of Tomato - Red Colossus over 3 weeks in the hot house. I have not grown this before but will be collecting seed for next season. Said to be better than Roma in cooler climates producing an abundance of Roma like fruits, just a bit smaller. The thing I like about growing in the grow bags in the hothouse is that I can move them outside on really hot days, i can manage the soil moisture easier, and i control the soil full stop. The soil goes on the compost heap or outside beds at seasons end and avoids the potential for nasties to build up in the soil.

10.01.2022 Further to a previous post watching the growth of some summer plants in the hothouse, photos really remind you of the growth over a week!!

09.01.2022 November weather data at my place. Well after a cool October, November warmed up with the average max equivalent to Dec 2019!!. Has been a solid start to the summer crops but the coming wind is not wanted (Typical tassie late spring/early summer). The rain also stopped
