22.01.2022 Well, somehow Lucy Allon and the good folk who work for and support delicious. Magazine managed to put together a multi state food competition in this crazy year. We were delighted to get the news that we were State winners and now National Gold Medalists in the From the Sea category. A huge thanks to our farm manager Sam and his wonderful team of Hans and Ash for once again coming up with sensational oysters for us to showcase in such trying conditions. We are so stoked... to be sharing this National accolade with 3 other farms within an hour’s drive of us (@wapengorockwildorganicoysters @mimosarockoysters @appellationoysters) who also were State winners and National Gold Medalists, the only oyster growers to receive this award Australia wide!! What better advertisement for people who love food to visit the Far South Coast of NSW. Big thank you to Corey Costelloe and the folks at Rockpool for the nomination. Still one level of award to be announced, here’s hoping one of the four Sydney Rock Oyster Growers might get the nod! This would effectively be Australia’s Seafood Champ for 2020 @deliciousaus @harveynormanaustralia @harveynormanau @rockpooldininggroup @cafesydney @saintpeterpaddo @mrniland @bennelong_sydney @firedoor_surryhills @ottoristorante @fishattherocks2017 @sydneycoveoysterbar @scob #knowyourproducer #produceawards #makeitdelicious #producetoyou #tathrastrong #tathra #tathraoysters #nelson #nelsonlagoon #goldmedalist #goldmedal #farsouthcoast #sydneyrockoysters @ Tathra Oysters

19.01.2022 Three year old Alex is clearly a lad who likes the finer things in life. Mum Clare assures us he has a gourmet palate and whilst we never want customers to feel oysters are a ‘luxury food’, we thought Alex’s obvious love was too good not to share. A true oyster lover! What a champion! We are still doing our 3 dozen shucked 3 year old Gem Grade ( same age as Alex!) for $25 at our shop in Tathra. At this price you can afford to feed the whole family! . . . ... #oysterlover #sydneyrocks #sydneyrockoysters #gems #tathra #affordablemeals #boosttheimmunesystem #betterthanchocky #zinc See more

15.01.2022 The new Tathra Oysters harvest season is still at least a couple of months away so it was nice to see the oysters are starting to put on some condition. In this one we opened yesterday you can see some fatness starting to build. The lake water, which was clear over the Winter, is starting to get a bit of colour, indicating the availability of food for hungry oysters. Wouldn’t it be nice to have an uneventful season with lots of oysters harvested and lots of customers on hand to enjoy them! #tathraoysters #nelsonlagoon #sydneyrockoysters #sydneyrocks #harvest #seasonality

13.01.2022 This is Roxy. She told us she drove all the way from Sydney so she could try Tathra Oysters....and she got here just in time!! Roxy got the last 3 dozen of the season! Thanks to all our customers, some who have been loyal for over 30 years now and the new ones too, like Roxy. Especially a big thanks to the locals this year who came out in droves to make sure local businesses didn’t fail. Thanks to governments at all levels and of all persuasions who worked hard to keep us sa...fe through all the dramas this season threw our way. We won’t be harvesting now until October or November (more likely November) when the water is warming and Nelson Lake does its magic once again to the mighty Sydney Rock Oysters that call it home. Thanks to all our supporters....you know who you are #tathraoysters #tathra #tathrastrong #nelson #nelsonlagoon #endofseason #sleepingoysters See more

04.01.2022 I think it is a good time to share some scientific research supporting the antiviral properties of oysters. Although we can't say that oysters will treat or pre...vent COVID19 , they have certain properties that may be beneficial in boosting our immunity and or inhibiting viruses. The first is a high Zinc content. Oysters are known to be one of the best sources of natural Zinc. Zinc is currently being used in a clinical trial for coronavirus in a University of Melbourne lead study, and Zinc has previously been shown to inhibit coronavirus (SARS) replication - see te Velthuis et al 2010 Plos Pathogens : https://www.researchgate.net/publication/47794995. The second reason is that oyster hemolymph (blood) contains at least 2 antiviral compounds (Cavortin and Viperin). We identified Cavortin as a major antiviral compound and documented the anti-Herpes Simplex virus activity of a large number of Pacific oyster breeding lines from Australia and all had some activity (Green et al 2014 Antiviral research http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.antiviral.2014.08.010) A subsequent study by Green at al 2015 Journal of General Virology (2015), 96, 35873597 identified Viperin and documented the antiviral activity against Dengue virus. This protein has been shown to inhibit a wide range of viruses including influenza, human cytomeglovirus, HIV and Hep C. Other studies on oyster plasma have reported activity against infectious pancreatic necrosis virus, human adenoviruses and rotoviruses - see out review paper Dang et al 2015 J Virol 89:81148118. doi:10.1128/JVI.00287-15. Some of the viruses mentioned above are single stranded RNA viruses like COVID-19 and some have lipid envelopes like COVID-19. So although we don't know if the oyster anti-viral agents will work against COVID-19 there is a good basis for further research. In the meantime - I suggest oysters are a good "functional food" - i.e. a food that provides heath benefits over and above basic nutrition. So if anyone in the oyster industry wants to promote this to boost local sales I am willing to provide some quotes or interview of media release. PM me. We should also promote the Aust Shellfish quality assurance program to support the industry and prevent over harvesting from local reefs!
