06.06.2022 Great profile here on the work and service of disaster chaplains, which mirrors what we do here at TCC Emergencies Ministry. The scale and scope of disaster chaplaincy in NSW is larger than in Tassie, but whatever and wherever the situation, chaplains care and are highly valued. Well done to Stephen Robinson and the NSW DRCN team!
21.05.2022 Wonderful to see this historic collaboration between our colleagues from VCC Emergencies Ministry and the NSW Disaster Recovery Chaplaincy Network. Aussies supporting Aussies! All jurisdictions have some form of disaster chaplaincy program, which unite under the Australian Volunteer Emergency Chaplaincy Alliance (AVECA). Members of AVECA have discussed interstate deplopyments for some time, and it's brilliant to see it happen for the first time. Congratulations from TCCEM to everyone involved - and sincere thanks to the chaplains who are spending time away from home to bring compassion and hope to those in need. Well done!
12.05.2022 We are deeply saddened by the terrible tragedy at Hillcrest Primary in Devonport last Thursday. Our prayers are with all the precious families that have lost loved ones and those who are still in critical condition in hospital. We grieve with the school community, and the broader community in Devonport and beyond. TCCEM is working in partnership with Devonport Chaplaincy (DC) who have been loving and caring for people since the accident occurred last Thursday. These chaplain...s, some of whom are TCCEM volunteers, have been amazing - and have continued to selflessly be there for others in the most extreme of circumstances. Andrew Hillier, DC's CEO, and I (Gus) are working together over what will be a long recovery for many. Also, TCCEM is providing support to office spaces where affected people work. Thank you to everyone involved in caring - every act of compassion makes a significant positive difference.
10.05.2022 Seven TCCEMers benefitted from the Volunteer Leadership Program over recent days. Organised and fully funded by the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience, this course brought together volunteer leaders from various agencies such as Surf Life Saving Tas, Tas Fire Service, Ambulance Tas, Red Cross and SES. Topics covered included Leadership Styles, Self Care, Diversity and Inclusivity, Tough Conversations, Change Management and Problem Solving. Thanks to our two engaging facilitators, Sal and Dan. It was a beneficial and worthwhile time for us all! PS Details of future courses are at https://www.aidr.org.au/progra/volunteer-leadership-program. PPS And yes, Phil and Gus are standing on the same step. :)
01.05.2022 In July 2000, a small piece of debris on the runway brought down Air France's Concorde with the tragic loss of 113 lives. Even a tiny piece of debris can cause significant damage to an aircraft so runways and taxiways are frequently monitored, and debris removed. Hobart Airport's Coordinating Chaplain, Gordon Gus Yearsley, joined the local Foreign Object Debris or FOD Walk this morning. Just one of the many activities for Airport Safety Week across Australia. And one of the many ways TCC Emergencies Ministry is contributing to life on lutriwita/Tasmania.
28.04.2022 We recently ran our first-ever online refresher training for current volunteers. Thanks to all who participated, as we covered significant ground over 3 hours on Zoom. TCCEM volunteers are required to complete refresher training once every three years and it is wonderful to have this cohort of faith-based chaplains and carers up-to-date in advance of the upcoming fire season. We hope we're not needed, but ready if we are!
25.01.2022 We are privileged to provide support for passengers disembarking the Spirit of Tasmania early each morning. With the days shortening, our volunteers start their shift in the dark and today in the rain too! They are brilliant people and doing a wonderful job. Huge thanks to them and all the other hundreds of volunteers serving in various ways across multiple organisations to care for their fellow Tasmanians. Well done! [Pic cred S. Bryan]
24.01.2022 Some good advice here from Dr Rob Gordon.
24.01.2022 Early each morning, our volunteers greet passengers disembarking the Spirit of Tasmania ferry in Devonport. These are anxious times for many and, with passengers heading into 14-days quarantine, our volunteers spend a few minutes listening to their stories and encouraging them in their journeys. In crises, different charities provide different supports and materials it might be meals, food hampers, a place to live/sleep, warm clothes, household goods, financial support or ...advice, etc. What we supply as TCC Emergencies Ministry is people people with time to listen, people with compassion, people who care. So, a huge shout out to our amazing volunteers who get up very early to love on others. This morning they enjoyed this glorious sunrise but some days it’s bucketing with rain and not so pleasant - especially as most of the conversations happen outside!
24.01.2022 Insightful conference with speaker Naomi Paget.
23.01.2022 Great opportunities to hear from Dr Rob Gordon - very worthwhile if you are in the area.
22.01.2022 Tasmania Fire Service is pleading with the community to avoid sparking new bushfires today as it continues to grapple with blazes at Glenfern and Elderslie, nor...th of Hobart. There is a total fire ban today and Friday in the Brighton, Derwent Valley, Hobart, Sorell, Central Highlands, Glamorgan Spring Bay, Huon Valley, Southern Midlands, Clarence, Glenorchy, Kingborough and Tasman municipalities.
20.01.2022 So good to see many people working together to care for and support their communities.
20.01.2022 Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the current NSW fires including community members, first responders battling these fires and our NSWDRCN chaplain colleagues currently deployed or preparing to be.
20.01.2022 Today, we remember sacrifice. Sacrifice then. Sacrifice now. ... Thank you.
17.01.2022 The Sikh community offers wonderful support in times of disaster in Australia.
13.01.2022 Stay up to date at http://alert.tas.gov.au.
11.01.2022 TFS has declared a total fire ban on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for the eastern half of the state. A total fire ban means it is illegal to light or to cause a... fire in the open. This includes (but is not limited to) incinerators, burn-offs, campfires, fire pots, and wood-fuelled barbecues. The total fire ban applies to municipalities in the north and south: Break O'Day, George Town, Northern Midlands, Dorset, Launceston, West Tamar, Flinders, Meander Valley, Brighton, Derwent Valley, Hobart, Sorell, Central Highlands, Glamorgan Spring Bay, Huon Valley, Southern Midlands, Clarence, Glenorchy, Kingborough, and Tasman. More information on Total Fire Bans and incidents in your area can be found at www.fire.tas.gov.au or by listening to ABC Radio.
10.01.2022 In these turbulent times, many of our volunteers are faithfully serving their local communities offering pastoral care, chaplaincy, personal support, Emotional Spiritual Care and Psychological First Aid. Well done to everyone who has risen to the challenge, knowing they are born for such a time as this.
10.01.2022 For three months, a faithful team of seven TCC Emergencies Ministry volunteers provided Emotional Spiritual Care to passengers disembarking the Spirit of Tasmania and heading to mandatory hotel quarantine. What a privilege to care for these people entering Tasmania and what a sterling effort from our volunteers. It was a 6.15 am start each day for an outdoor shift in the depth of winter. The attached screenshot was sent to me by one of the volunteers on arrival one morning. 'Twas a bit chilly most days but incredibly worthwhile to be there. Great effort, Spirit Team!
06.01.2022 Smoke in the air around Hobart, and houses potentially under threat, remind us of the dangers we face and the need for thousands of Tasmanians to be prepared. Many people work and volunteer in the emergency management and disaster recovery space, including the wonderful volunteers of TCC Emergencies Ministry. In an evacuation centre, these personal support workers and chaplains have time to be present with affected people and journey with them. The Emergencies Ministry progra...m relies on the willingness of the volunteers to care for others, and the generosity of people who contribute financially to enable to program to function. The website at https://www.tccem.org.au has details of how to be involved. If you can contribute financially as we prepare for the fire season (which seems to have started!), please give to BSB 067103, Account 10641483. Donations are tax deductible. Thank you! See more
03.01.2022 Please do all you can to stay safe in tomorrow’s extreme conditions. If you see fire/smoke report it to 000. Report suspicious activity too. Can our volunteers please be ready to deploy in case we are needed. Hopefully, we won’t be!
02.01.2022 Well done to our counterparts in Victoria for the work they are doing supporting people in affected communities.
02.01.2022 Today is a high threat day regarding fires in Tasmania. Please note the TFS advice below. Stay safe everyone.
