The University of South Australia and the SIDA Foundation and The David Roche Foundation Curatorial Research Fellowship in Interior Design and Decoration, valued at $15,000, offers a unique opportunity for a practitioner or academic to exp...lore new fields of knowledge across the allied professions of interior design, architecture and furniture and product design. Applications for the Fellowship were extremely competitive, with a diverse range of imaginative and original projects presented for consideration by a panel of judges comprising Professor Joanne Cys and Peter Walker from UniSA, Robert Reason, Museum Director, The David Roche Foundation and David Burton, Director, Williams Burton Leopardi. Dr Hinkel’s project, The Doppelgänger Explorations on the Original and the Copy in the Post-Digital Age, will explore opportunities digital technologies offer today in augmenting our relationship to art and design in general and how digital technologies trouble distinctions between the original and the copy in particular. Dr Hinkel is Associate Professor for Architecture and Design at the University of Melbourne and has taught across the fields of architecture, interior design and industrial design at institutions in Australia, Germany and Sweden. His research focuses on experimental explorations of interactive human environments. 10.01.2022 Made by French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars, one can only imagine the fascinating stories these pieces of ‘trench art’ could tell! For soldiers being held as prisoners during wartime, it is said that one of the most difficult aspects of their incarceration is the boredom with long days and few amenities; consequently in centuries past, many soldiers took up a craft in order to pass the time and supplement their incomes, and thereby make their period of incarc...eration more endurable. David Roche put together a small, but important collection of works made by French prisoners of war from the Napoleonic Wars. This collection demonstrates the variety of materials that the prisoners used for their objects, with pieces made of straw, bovine bone, even human hair! All of these can currently be seen in our War and Pieced exhibition alongside Annette Gero’s 25 exquisite military quilts. As part of the season of War and Pieced, this Thursday 22 October at 6PM, The David Roche Foundation is hosting John McPhee, inaugural curator of the Decorative Arts at the National Gallery of Australia, who will be talking about the health benefits for soldiers of taking up a craft during (as a prisoner of war) and after (in recovery) wartime. All seats for John's talk are now sold out! However, we have more events coming up over the next couple of months, which can be viewed at: rochefoundation.com.au/events/calendar #TDRF #davidrochecollection #warandpieced #militaria #napoleonic #trenchart #arttalk #artlecture #northadelaide #adelaideart

10.01.2022 Among Annette Gero’s incredible quilts currently on display in the War and Pieced exhibition is this 1892 example from Britain or Canada, which consists of 46 squares, mostly red, but also with a few white interspersed, made from military fabric; each of which are embroidered in gold thread with flowers and a series of names. Only the central square differs, with a raised crown in black fabric with beading, around which is embroidered with ‘May God’s Richest Blessing Rest upo...n this Effort 1892’ in gold thread. This piece is an example of a ‘signature quilt’, a type of quilt first made in the mid-1800s. The earliest examples of these had inked signatures, the embroidered signature being a development of the later 19th century. What is noticeable about this quilt is the variation in the embroidery, lettering and style of name used (full name, initial, or first name), all of which indicates that the quilt was not done by one person, but the squares were made by a number of different individuals, before they were sewn together at the end. One can see some squares that were bought by one family: one such square is embroidered with Mr. Evison, Mrs. Evison, Charlie, Ernest, Grace, Baby, Faith and Hope. On the other hand, an individual named J.A. Austin seems to have bought two squares for him or herself alone! Signature quilts are known to have been made for a number of purposes. In this instance, the use of military uniform fabric and the sheer number of names on this quilt suggest that it is a ‘fundraising’ quilt, though unfortunately the beneficiary of the funds is no longer known one might wonder if it was to raise money for retired or convalescing soldiers? Be sure to visit the exhibition before it closes 19 December. #TDRF #davidrochefoundation #warandpieced #quiltexhibition #quilting #quilts #annettegero #northadelaide #adelaide

09.01.2022 Part of the Martyn Cook Bequest 2020, this haunting dry point engraving depicts the young Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich in outline with shading of hair and face, as well as outline of neck and collar. In the lower left is the subject's Russian signature. It is the gaze of the subject that truly captures the attention of the viewer. Strangely, the reason for the portrait is unknown as is the artist. Grand Duke Dmitri was the only son of Grand Duke Paul, youngest legitimate son o...f Alexander II, and Princess Alexandra of Greece. Dmitri and his sister, Marie, were brought up by Paul’s brother, Sergei, and his wife Elizabeth Feodorovna. In the years leading up to World War One, Dmitri became close to the Emperor Nicholas II and his family, and there were even rumours that Dmitri would marry Nicholas’ eldest daughter, Olga. However, Dmitri Pavlovich is primarily known to history as one of the murderers of the ‘mad monk’ Rasputin. Dmitri believed that he was acting for the good of the Emperor and the state in killing Rasputin. The deed was carried out on 30 December 1916, also involved were Prince Felix Yusupov, Felix Purishkevich and Sergei Sukhotin. For his involvement, Dmitri was banished by the Emperor to the Persian front, an act that would ultimately save his life as he gained asylum in Britain after the Russian Revolution. He would go on to live in both Europe and America, have an amorous relationship with the famous Coco Chanel (who he introduced to the master Russian-French parfumeur Ernest Beaux who offered her a number of his essence creations she picked number 5, the sales of which made her a multi-millionaire), and had a son, Paul, by the American heiress, Audrey Emery. Dmitri died of tuberculosis in Switzerland aged 50 in 1942. The portrait of Dmitri Pavlovich is currently on display in the Russian room of Fermoy House. #TDRF #davidrochefoundation #davidrochecollection #martyncook #martyncookbequest #art #artgallery #dmitripavlovich #romanov #engraving #northadelaide #southaustralia #hiddengem

07.01.2022 Another fascinating piece to enter The David Roche Collection through the Martyn Cook Bequest 2020 is this late 19th century set of fire tools that once belonged to members of the Angas family of Adelaide. The set consists of a three-arm circular stand that holds a pair of tongs, a shovel and a stoker. Each aspect is made from discarded blued steel French bayonets with mahogany and brass rifle butt handles, inscribed to the blade with information on their place and date of ma...nufacture; the bayonets used for the tongs and stoker date to 1879, the shovel to 1881. These discarded bayonets would have been brought to Australia sometime after 1881, and likely repurposed by the Angas family farrier into their current state. They represent a type art form known as trench art and are a fine example of how objects of war were repurposed into functional items. They were sold from the Angas family by local antique business, Quigley Antiques and acquired by Martyn Cook in 2017. The fire tools are currently on display in the gallery as part of War and Pieced exhibition and are joined by prisoner-of-war items and of course, superb quilts made from discarded military uniforms. #TDRF #davidrochecollection #martyncookbequest #warandpieced #quiltexhibition #militaria #northadelaide #southaustralia #hiddengem
