25.01.2022 "... human beings were never born to read." Dr Maryanne Wolfe Reader Come Home (2018)

24.01.2022 There is 'lots of evidence of positive effects from a code approach' (p.9). The evidence concludes that early, systematic phonics is essential! (Beck & Beck, 2013). If you have a child who is struggling with reading and you think your child's classroom may be using a balanced literacy approach... or you're not sure how your child is being taught to read... I'm always happy to have a chat about how you may be able to support your child.

22.01.2022 I've been a little quiet of late. Husband finished an astronomy degree, a new puppy joined our family and I managed to keep my head above water as I finished off the school year as a teacher, mum and student. Thinking of you all as we begin 2020. I look forward to hearing and sharing stories with you

21.01.2022 "If children know 8 nursery rhymes by heart by the time they are 4 years old, theyre usually among the best readers and spellers by the time they are 8. (Mem Fox, Reading Magic). Mmm, I'm not sure my 5 year old son knows 8 nursery rhymes. Guess what we are going to do this week? 14.01.2022 There are generally two approaches to teaching reading: 1. Meaning-emphasis approach 2. Code-emphasis approach. "The meaning-emphasis programs stress the use of context and picture cues. The code-based programs stress the letter-sound correspondences of major phonic elements' (Beck & Beck, 2013, p.3).... Which approach do you see being used?

My first subject is complete and this feedback is more than I could have hoped for Well done, Kristy This is an excellent assignment that demonstrates a sound knowledge of the course materials and a comprehensive understanding of dyslexia and conditions that co-occur with it. You write very well and reflect thoughtfully on the course materials, which evidences your knowledge and wider reading in this area.
