19.01.2022 When everything seems a bit overwhelming, stop... take a breath... focus on what is... What can you control right now? it might be as simple as "Will sitting or standing make me feel more comfortable? or watching a funny cat video and really focusing on being in the moment. Kids are no different to us. When they feel scared or overwhelmed, having something that they feel in control of can switch on the critical thinking part of their brain and take away the power of that fi...ght or flight reaction. What if thoughts and conversations have their place. Sometimes talking through different scenarios, and then discussing what could be done in each, can help children feel prepared and calm them. As they are about to go into a medical treatment though it is usually better to redirect to What is - the situation right now and what you do have the power to control. Offer choices where both options are doable like Do you want to read this book or sing a song? or Would you like to sit on my lap or on the chair by yourself?"

Were very excited to be part of Childrens Book Council of Australia - NSW Branchs daily storytime with facebook live. Well be doing a reading of Ted goes to hospital as well as sharing how we go about writing books and sharing some we wrote when we were at school. ... Ted goes to hospital is a great for kids aged 2-10 to help prepare them for visits to hospital either as a patient or visitor. Kids share Teds journey through surgery, learning who they might meet and what might happen. Make sure you let your daycare, preschool or school to tune in and comment with your childs first name and where youre from during the event and well give you a call-out!

16.01.2022 This Ted is very excited to be off on his first big adventure! Hes heading to his forever home with a gorgeous little girl whos adopting him. Hope shes ready for lots of giggles and cuddles because Ted sure is Together with his accompanying storybook, Ted goes to hospital, Ted is helping his friend prepare for her own operation and just like Lambie does in the story, Ted will stay with her the whole time.

Use it as a way to learn about that animal and thats some school work ticked off for the day. 1. Do a Google search for bear... 2. Scroll down to the box with a picture of a bear titled Meet a life-sized bear close up. 3. Click on View in 3D 4. On the next screen clock on View in your space 5. Follow instructions on screen to move your camera around to orient the image. 6. Turn up the volume and enjoy! Youll need to give permission to access camera and photos the first time. 06.01.2022 Love this medical play idea from @happy_explorers #Repost This one is for all the parents and educators that have the @from_chewing_to_pooing STEM book. If you have another book on the human body one of the pictures from that would work too.... For this game I photocopied page 18 in the book and built a digestive tract using large straws, sticky tape, a balloon, glue and wool. We rolled foil for our food pieces strengthening our #finemotor ability and to feed into our digestive system. The thing I like best about this activity was that you had to work the ball through the stomach and intestines to get it out. Just like real life , it wasnt the plan but a nice surprise during play. The science: The stomach and intestine muscles contract to push food along its digestive path. Food is continuously broken down the GI tract and is pushed one way through the system. Little doors called sphincters close behind food as it travels so the food doesnt goes back the other way. 03.01.2022 Who else is struggling with all of this smoke? Feeling very grateful that our #tedhead is old enough now to recognise for himself the early sign off breathing problems. Weve had to do a refresher on good puffer techniques because hes been asthma symptom free for years. ... Weve downloaded the Kiss My Asthma app which was created by Uni of Sydney and Asthma Australia specifically for young people with asthma. Even for older kids, the worry that their asthma might escalate to a full blown attack can create anxiety (which in turn doesnt help their breathing). Feeling like they have control over something, even if its just recording their symptoms can help reduce anxiety. Hopefully this app helps him feel more in control of his own treatment and keeps the anxiety at bay. Any other suggestions? #growingup #selfcare #kissmyasthma
