10.01.2022 Life Interrupted Child Cancer Awareness 2020 Leukaemia Leukaemia is cancer of the bone marrow, which produces three types of blood cells. Blood is made up of 3 cells, white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. White blood cells (leukocytes) serve as the body's defense system against infection. In leukaemia, the marrow produces an overabundance of cancerous white cells. Eventually they crowd out the healthy, infection-fighting mature leukocytes in the marrow and the b...loodstream, opening the door to viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms. At the same time, the impaired marrow grinds out fewer oxygen-toting red blood cells and fewer platelets, the clotting cells responsible for stopping bleeding. Types of leukaemia include: * Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) - Affects white blood cells called lymphocytes. * Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) - Affects other white blood cells called granulocytes and monocytes. * There are many other types and subtypes of leukaemia. Because it floods the blood with malignant white cells, the disease is by nature systemic, or system-wide. When the cancer spreads outside the bone marrow, the blood vessels may whisk it to the brain and spinal cord, the testicles, the ovaries, the kidneys and other organs. Leukaemia (ALL) is the most prevalent cancer in children (0-14y), although for some the survival rate has improved greatly, these survivors are left with many adverse affects from treatments and there are still many children who die from Leukaemia. Being mindful that often treatments for various other cancers can cause secondary Leukaemia (AML). Common symptoms of childhood leukemia - Anemia - Frequent infections - Bruising and bleeding - Bone or joint pain - Swelling - Lack of appetite, stomachache, and weight loss - Coughing or breathing difficulties - Headaches, vomiting, and seizures - Skin rashes - Extreme fatigue - Feeling generally unwell Image credit: Stephen Kelly, 2019 https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/322389 #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #BeTheChange #GoGold #Child&AYACancerAwareness #CCAM Awareness=Funding=Research=Treatments that HEAL and do no harm
