24.01.2022 Great news! A national collaboration of infectious disease researchers, including our own Associate Professor Chris Blyth, Co-Director of the Wesfarmers Centre of Vaccines and Infectious Diseases, have been named as finalists for the country’s most prestigious science awards the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes. The collaboration, the Australian Paediatric Influenza Immunisation Research Group, has built upon a decade of scientific evidence to advocate for a nationwide childhood influenza immunisation policy for the first time in Australia’s history.

22.01.2022 Thanks to funding from The Pirate Ship Foundation, Telethon Kids brain cancer researchers have developed a new tool that could improve outcomes for children with radiation-induced glioma, an aggressive secondary cancer caused by radiation therapy. We have never been able to properly study this form of cancer in the lab before, and now we hope to be able to give more answers so no child or their family has to go through this again, said Dr Raelene Endersby, co-head of the Brain Tumour Research team.

21.01.2022 At just seven years old, Tenaya had to undergo life-saving emergency surgery to repair her damaged heart valve. The cause was rheumatic heart disease (RHD), a condition which disproportionately affects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Now, through the power of collaboration between researchers, the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector, clinicians and government, we’ve developed the RHD Endgame Strategy, a plan to eliminate rheumatic heart disease in Australia for good by 2031. 19.01.2022 Have your kids been glued to their screens this summer? Leading cyber safety researcher Professor Donna Cross says what kids use their devices for is just as important as how long they spend on them. So when you're setting limits for screen time, consider what they'll actually be getting up to online.

18.01.2022 Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is the leading cause of cardiovascular inequality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. And yet, it’s completely preventable. Today, the END RHD CRE (based at Telethon Kids) has launched the RHD Endgame Strategy, which outlines how to better support those living with RHD and prevent the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from bearing the scars of this deadly disease. Because no child born in Australia today should die from RHD.

17.01.2022 Thanks to all the schools who took part in our fantastic term three 'Meet a Researcher' pilot program! Our awesome researchers visited 15 primary schools to share what they do to help kids lead happy and healthy lives. Students got to make slime to learn about the biofilm that causes ear infections, create their own ‘blood’ sample using household materials, learn about the importance of sleep, play the role of a fighter cell and more! If you’d like to bring science to life at your school, we’re extending our free program for term four. Visit our website to learn more: https://discoverycentre.telethonkids.org.au//book-a-schoo/

17.01.2022 Next week, many of our school leavers will be heading down south or across to Rottnest to celebrate the end of their school days. This can be an anxious time for parents who may be concerned about their child being hurt due to alcohol. It's never too late (or too early) to talk about alcohol, so our researchers from the Supporting Family Conversations project have shared some tips on how to talk to your teen before they head off to Leavers.

16.01.2022 We might not want to think about our children dealing with creepy people online. For many parents, it's the scariest thing about our child's digital life: we're not always going to be there with them, and we can't control other people's interactions. Instead, we need to arm our kids with information. For help with tackling tough conversations like this, download the Beacon app a trusted source of personalised cyber-safety information by Telethon Kids and Bankwest: https://beacon.telethonkids.org.au/

14.01.2022 A huge thank you to Mrs Praveena Mittal, one of the teachers at Lathlain Primary School, for shaving her head to raise funds for Telethon Kids! Earlier this year, Praveena’s 2 year-old granddaughter became suddenly and critically unwell with a bacterial infection in her spine. After weeks of being in hospital, hooked up to bottles of antibiotics, and months of wearing a half body brace, she is now infection free and has made a full recovery. In Praveena’s words, ‘none of this would have been possible without amazing medical research that makes it easier to diagnose and treat patients’. Thank you Praveena and the Lathlain PS community!

13.01.2022 Charlotte is under the care of 18 specialist teams - but no one has any answers for what disease or condition she might have. No name, no prognosis, and no evidence-based therapies that could help her. Thousands of WA children like Charlotte are living with undiagnosed diseases, caused by tiny, unique variations in the DNA. At Telethon Kids, we're at the leading edge of genomics research, with the specialist teams and technology to detect these DNA variations and help solve some of these challenging medical mysteries. Researcher Daniel Christensen said the study had shown that other factors such as a child’s family, home environment and local community were just as important and should be part of the mix when working out how ready a child was for school and whether they needed extra support.
