25.01.2022 CHAMOMILE I used to drink this tea all the time as a kid and not realise how many medicinal benefits it has Double whammy for settling upset tummys but also calming to the nervous system, a common thing in IBS.... Another key ingredient in my herbal eczema cream as it assists with wound healing topically Image via @loveteaofficial

24.01.2022 Drooling over this homemade slaw by @therusticfoodie If you're struggling to get your coloured veg in this is a great choice for the warmer weather! My go to for this is using half half red and savoy cabbage, sliced green apple, spring onions, grated carrot. ... Dressing: mostly apple cider vinegar, mayo (or without), Dijon mustard, olive oil, salt and pepper.

24.01.2022 CLIENT RESULTS Joint effort with @theaestheticskinclinic_ for this lovely clients skin. "Thank you so much for making the hugest difference so far- the after photos are my skin on a bad day and theyre still soooo much better! Thanks again."... Pathology investigations, dietary changes and personalised medicine

22.01.2022 Youre in control of it all Image via @about.the.good.life

21.01.2022 ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS Lets debunk some myths. Artificial sweeteners are kind of like a short cut to bypassing sugar or calories without being completely tastless, which seems harmless... Ingredients like sucralose, maltodextrin, saccharin and aspartame are the most common, quite often found in zero sugar drinks or coffee sweeteners. ... These ingredients are not harmless Artificial sweeteners like these have been clinically shown to disturb digestive bacteria and lead to inflammation. Some of these ingredients are only 15% digestible by our gut and so instead just attract water and cause diarrhoea. This is particularly important if you have IBS or other digestive issues and you cant work out why your symptoms keep coming back. *Side note: Stevia and xylitol are safe, natural sweeteners so opt for these if any at all.

21.01.2022 ANXIETY & ALLERGIES The two dont sound related do they? Well I can tell you theres a definate link here. 1 of 2 ways. One is allergies are often stemming from a compromised immune system via the gut. Our gut produces serotonin which is one of our neurotransmitters that regulates happiness and mood, including anxiety.... Secondly, vitamin B6 is one that acts as a precursor to create these neurotransmitters, but it is also vital to regulate our histamine metabolism. In ongoing allergies, this histamine process is out of whack and needs to be balanced out. Viola!

21.01.2022 TAMARI ALMONDS Snack attack recipe alert and super easy! Cover raw almonds in tamari and bake in the oven at 180 for 15 minutes or until tamari has evaporated, turning every 5 minutes.... Great addition if youre struggling for ideas on how to include more nuts

21.01.2022 ROSACEA Rosacea is a type of acne, however has some slightly different causes and appearance to it. Typically, rosacea is more red, inflammed and angry looking. Skin is usually a little more sensitive to topical products you put on it. Location wise is typical to appear across the nose and cheeks, quite often with small acne-like lesions.... Rosacea most often occurs with other digestive complaints like reflux, bloating, inconsistent bowel movements or abdominal pain. Tips to combat: Check your vitamin D levels, if they're below 80 then it needs to be higher! Make sure you're using gentle, natural products on the face - skincare or makeup. Try taking 1-2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar/day on an empty stomach to help with your stomach acid. Avoid over consuming high refined carbohydrates like white pastas, breads, sugars etc.

20.01.2022 Current bread obsession at the moment @zeallybaysourdough stoneground sourdough. Sourdough has less gluten and being fermented means its easier on your digestive system

20.01.2022 Oh the love hate relationship with caffeine This doesnt necessarily mean you have to give it up, it might just be a reminder to work on managing your stress levels so your body can handle it better.

20.01.2022 FENNEL Yep, that weird looking thing you see in the fridge section of supermarkets. I used to eat this all the time when I was younger... my grandmother would prepare it cut up and washed, with olive oil, salt and pepper ... Now medicinally we use fennel for upset tums both in adults and children/babies. So useful in colic, indigestion, inflammatory bowel diseases and randomly, lactation! Adding this guy to your meals or as a snack may save you from potentially needing to eliminate certain foods from your diet.

19.01.2022 GUT LOVING PORRIDGE Cooking time was probably less than 10 minutes for this one Cook 1/2 cup rolled oats, a big sprinkle of cinnamon, 1 tbsp flaxseed meal and 3/4 cup dairy free milk over a medium-high heat until liquid has cooked through. ... I added half a banana, squeeze of honey, 1 tbsp tahini and some hemp seeds but you can add your own twist! Cooked oats + seeds = one happy tum

18.01.2022 CHIA SEEDS The highest food source of omega 3s second to seafood. High in fibre and protein, this simple superfood provides so many benefits, particularly for digestion.

18.01.2022 WAITING GAME When I was at UNI I remember trialling various herbs and nutrients and then stopping after a few weeks if I didn't see much difference. As I learnt more I realised some herbs and nutrients can take longer to work than others, and I probably stopped just as they were about to really kick off! For example, fish oil (a good quality one) takes up to 12 weeks, some herbs also this time, others 3 weeks, others within 30 minutes!... Some of the lovely cognitive herbs like ginkgo and brahmi take 12 weeks, so if you're expecting to ace your exam period by taking these the week or 2 before, chances are it ain't gonna do much. Lots of these are readily available in chemists and supermarkets etc but you're not getting the personalised care like you would working with a health practitioner

16.01.2022 These essential nutrients have been found to be lower amounts in the blood of women on the oral contraceptive pill, particularly over a long period of time. vitamin B6 vitamin B12 vitamin B2 vitamin E... zinc magnesium selenium folic acid (vitamin B9) Many of these are key for mental health and energy, plus also consider these are the ones that the body uses up when were stressed! Genetically, if you already have DNA SNPs among any of these (very common) then its even more important to keep on top of either through food sources or supplements

15.01.2022 BEANS Do you avoid beans at all cost because they give you awful digestive symptoms? Beans are such a good source of nutrients, particularly for vegetarian and vegan diets. The reason many people experience these tummy symptoms is because beans are high in a type of carbohydrate called oligosaccharides, which in some people can cause massive issues.... Generally, we want more oligosacchardies in our diet because it helps good digestive bacteria to grow. However in others, they dont have the digestive capacity and balance of bacteria to break these beans down. Main tip to help for this is to opt for dried instead of canned legumes, and slow cook/soak the dried legumes in water. This helps to reduce those oligosaccharides and make it easy for the gut to digest! Dried legumes are: - cheaper to buy - dont have the added sodium that canned ones do - easy to buy in bulk - contain less exposure to things like BPA and mercury - less wastage with packaging

15.01.2022 MYRRH Another beautiful hippie herbal monograph Myrrh we use for overgrowths of bacteria in any mucous membranes (not just intestinal) by stimulating the bodys immune response.... Its also been studied to be just as effective as doxycycline for managing acne without the side effects. Once again further reinforcing that connection between digestive health and skin

15.01.2022 NUTRITION LABELS Save this inforgraphic from @ausgov! When comparing any packaged foods the information at the back can be overwhelming. But I love how this image simplifies things.... There's two columns, per serve and per 100g. ALWAYS compare per 100g as the serving size could be different. In things like yoghurts and cereals where sugars are quite often hidden, you can see here how you want to aim for less than 15g sugar per 100g. Sugars and fibre content are the two main things I look at, however your concerns might be different depending on what you're wanting to focus on.

14.01.2022 Protein egg muffins recipe up on the @thesanaco website!

14.01.2022 LEEKS The humble leek, belonging to the genus Allium family with garlic and onions. Make the most of our seasonal winter veg supply with this tasty prebiotic guy. ... Leeks are one of the most common prebiotic food I advise people to include more of because they are high in inulin which help our gut bacteria to thrive. Soups, roasted, cooked in your scrambled eggs or a garnish to salads babe_farms

13.01.2022 MAGNESIUM A simple mineral many of us are deficient in these days as our body churns through it when were under stress. One of our favourite stress-specific magnesium supplements at clinic is even out of stock Australia wide at the moment (I wonder why) ... Signs your body is low: Eyelid twitches, teeth grinding/clenching, sleep disturbances, muscle cramps or restless legs, sugar cravings, hand tremors, low calcium or vitamin D. Bath in it, apply it topically or supplement with a powder or tablet. Any way you do it your body will thank you Image via: @salt_lab

11.01.2022 FOLIC ACID Weve all heard about how important folate is for pregnancy and preconception care. But as a naturopath we look so much deeper into this. Folate is the umbrella term for different types like folic acid, folinic acid etc. And it is vital for mental health, B12 status, energy, preventing neutral tube defects and miscarriages.... So vital that as of 2009 it became mandatory in Australia to add into flours and cereals to reduce the incidences of these. However genetically some people cant metabolise folate in its folic acid form. For these people, supplements containing folic acid will accumulate and actually put a burden on the body causing cardiovascular issues or worsen symptoms of other nutritional deficiencies. Unless youve done a genetic test, theres no real way of accurately knowing this answer. If theres a family history of miscarriages, high blood pressure or lots of mental health conditions then its a high possibility. So for these people, their body needs folate in an already active form to bypass these issues - folinic acid or 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, and may help prevent their future health risks. If youre looking at conceiving in the near future or are already taking a natal multi, look into what form your folate is. Or if youre wanting to know more about your genetic makeup in general, book in a consult for your personalised plan

10.01.2022 LEGUME PASTAS Im loving the legume pastas from @barilla and @sanremo Twice the amount of protein and fibre as regular pasta, doesnt leave you feeling bloated or over-full if you usually have gut issues. Simple, clean ingredients!

09.01.2022 POMEGRANATE Bet you didnt think this beautiful looking fruit was medicinal. Commonly known for its use in intestinal upsets like worms, overgrowth of bad bacteria and parasites, this middle-eastern fruit also has shown benefits for lowering prostate cancer risk in men.... And of course, anything that is this brightly coloured also means its super high in antioxidants Image via @erikaleesears

09.01.2022 CANDIDA Candida is what we call an opportunistic bacteria in our gut. Which means it only causes issues when its overgrown at certain opportunistic like lowered immune system, use of antibiotics, high intake of refined carbohydrates and sugars. Youll find if you search symptoms of candida overgrowth theyre quite generalised and probably tick alot of boxes for people. This doesnt necessarily mean you have an issue with candida that you have to tackle with a crazy st...rict diet. Because sometimes its gone beyond improving through food choices. Candida overgrowth I find is very common in chronic eczema, big histories of antibiotics, any type of thrush and long term use of ventolin inhalers (even a few times a week). Ideally, our immune system and good gut bacteria should be able to fight this overgrowth off. So make sure youre always supporting your bacteria with a high quality probiotic whenever you take antibiotics and be cautious of over consuming those sugary white carbohydrates that it will feed off

08.01.2022 No, we dont do massages or cover you in crystals and perform a sance heres what it involves: Initial consults are generally 45-60 mins. The first 10-15 mins Ill spend asking questions related to what youre wanting help with, including when it first started, what makes it better, worse, what youve tried to help it etc. Then the majority of the consult I run through each body system like immunity, digestion and ask more specific questions about how theyre all functioni...ng for you. This includes family history, childhood/teenage years and medical history. The last 5 mins I then do some physical examinations like checking irises, tongues, nails and perhaps other in-clinic tests suitable. By now I know just about every detail of your health and how your body functions. Between this first consult and the next return consult I spend anywhere between 1-2 hrs on putting your case together and writing a report and treatment plan for you to work out a long term plan of attack, also researching anything Im not sure of and looking at any blood tests youve had done recently. This time inbetween means Ive fully comprehended whats going on and how were going to tackle it together. Prescriptions may include herbal or nutritional supplements in the form of tablets, liquids or powders, or as an individually made up mix. Return consults: 20-30 mins which Im assessing how everythings going, if we need to change anything, making sure the treatment is effective but also manageable. As time goes on and improvements are made generally these consults get more and more spaced out. Thats the idea, for people to be well enough again that they can manage their health on their own long term. Hopefully this clears up any misconceptions on what we witch doctors do in appointments! The takeaway is that its very personalised to you as an individual

08.01.2022 WITHANIA A classic favourite among herbalists due to its many many benefits Withania is typically used for periods of high stress and anxiety, busy lifestyles where we are just running on empty. Its what we call an adaptogen - helps our body naturally adapt to stress.... Clinically shown to reduce blood levels of cortisol, often described as a big warm hug We also love this one for lowering cholesterol, boosting immunity and general PMS complaints.

08.01.2022 OVULATION Why is it important? How do we know its happening? Ovulation is so much more important than just for fertility. Every month, women are given somewhat of a report card through our cycle, and ovulation is a big indicator of good health. ... Women NEED to ovulate to be able to make oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones help build bone, regulate metabolism and protect against cardiovascular conditions. A study by professor Jerilynn Prior: "Women benefit from 35-40 years of ovulatory cycles to prevent osteoporosis, stroke, dementia, breast cancer and heart disease." Tips: If you're not on any hormonal contraceptive measures, track your cycle and symptoms on an app... stat! Measuring your temperature daily and putting that into your app will give you the most accurate result, or those urine ovulation tests (this needs to be done for 3 months for it to get an accurate reading). Your temperature should peak in the luteal phase (second half) of your cycle. Presence of cervical mucous is also another great indicator of ovulation. Not ovulating could be an indicator for PCOS, undereating (specifically carbs) and any hormonal birth control use. Always seek professional advice to get to your root cause

07.01.2022 MCT OIL Commonly known for its use in keto diets due to its fatty acid content. However quite the new kid on the block in my repertory for also treating digestive complaints.... We love using things that have multiple benefits

07.01.2022 GRASS FED MEATS Youve probably noticed this label on meats and thought whats the difference? The biggest difference with grass fed meats compared to grain fed is better fats. 03.01.2022 CINNAMON Chai enthusiasts... listen up We love cinnamon to help regulate blood sugar levels, warm the body, calm tummy aches and balancing testosterone levels.

02.01.2022 APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Your number 1 digestive pantry staple! Apple cider vinegar mimics the action of stomach acid, which many of us dont have enough of. Some signs of this would be a low appetite in the morning, bloating, stools less than once a day, heartburn, trouble digesting meat and food allergies.... Stomach acid is so important for good bacteria in our gut to grow and thrive but also breaking down nutrients so we can absorb them. 1-2 tablespoons straight or in some warm water should keep your tum happy.

01.01.2022 THE FEMALE CYCLE My goodness, 4 years of studying a health science degree barely scratches the surface of understanding womens hormones and why things happen at certain times. Everyone is very different hence there is no one fit product/diet for generalised hormone balancing. First of all, begin being aware of what happens and when. Track any symptoms you might have and how youre feeling. Secondly, if you do suspect something is not right I urge you to steer clear of ...buying over the counter/online products designed for balancing hormones. Some of the herbs in these include ones we generally dont touch unless we have blood test results, or theyre in such a low dose that theyre not reaching a therapeutic action. Getting blood tests done at certain points of your cycle is also important depending on what youre wanting help with e.g. fertility or acne. As naturopaths, we interpret these results a little differently to the reference ranges given. And on that note, regular menstrual cycles and no symptoms etc isnt always indicative of something not being out of whack. Everyone has different genetics, exposed to different environments, have different nutritional needs and have different medical histories. We take all of this into account when trying to understand whats happening for YOU.
