25.01.2022 Did you know that the Kiama area is home to nearly 400 heritage listed dry stone walls? First built by convicts in the 1830s, our region is one of the few in Au...stralia that used dry stone walls as rural fencing at this time. The majority of the walls were built over 60 years by a prolific stone wall builder named Thomas Newing, whose walls covered a lot of kilometres - from Shellharbour all the way to Berry! He used the local volcanic stone, with two wall faces leaning against each other and a continuous row of larger stones at the top. The wall types resemble stone walls prevalent across Ireland and Britain. You can find many around #saddlebackmountain where some have been repaired by volunteers using the traditional methods. . A quote from Thomas Newing: ‘Stones are like people. Some are good to work with, they fit in anywhere, but others are cranky, you’ve got to humour ‘em. Leave them to one side a bit, and you’ll get a place for them all right.' 24.01.2022 Since Halloween is almost here (on Saturday night), we thought we'd re-visit the story about the stretch of road between Dunmore and Minnamurra known as 'The Bl...oody Mile' . Warning, this post is graphic and not for the faint of heart! The stories are sourced from paranormal.com.au, and so may be taken with a pinch of salt. A creepy torch or campfire is also recommended. It is believed that in the early pioneering days, over thirteen gruesome murders took place along this strip. Today, the 'Bloody Mile' incorporates the cycle track through the Dunmore forest, north of the Minnamurra Bridge, where some people have reported strange noises, an eerie cold feeling in the air, and the sense of being watched !! The first ghastly event that occurred was the murder of Patrick Fox (the Convict Overseer on the Mark's Farm) by James Tobin. Tobin killed Fox with an axe, but claimed he was innocent and that Fox was killed by bushrangers. Unfortunately for Tobin, the murder weapon was found near his hut and he was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Tobin's remains were subsequently dissected by medical students and parts of his body can still be found preserved in glass jars in the Sydney Medical College. Another grisly murder was committed by a woman called Ellen Flynn in 1861, who lived with her sister Ann in a house in 'The Village' on the southern side of the Minnamurra Bridge. Ellen is said to have 'snapped' in the summer heat not long after she had a child. She murdered her poor baby and walked around screaming 'Look, I am a butcher now!'. In 1894, John McEncros was crossing the Minnamurra Bridge on his way home to Dunmore when his horse was spooked. John was thrown from his horse and died from a fractured skull when he hit the edge of the bridge. In 1909, a decapitated body was found between the railway and the road (the head was found further along). It was never discovered how the body got there, however, an abandoned swag was found near the Minnamurra Station at the same time. Did the man walk in his sleep onto the railway and then get hit by the 'cow catcher' on a train and thrown to the side of the railway ...? In 1916, a Mrs Lambert was riding in a horse and buggy when her buggy struck a rock or bump in the road outside the gates of Dunmore House. She was thrown from the buggy, but was unhurt. However, she was holding a baby at the time and it was thrown from her arms and was killed. In 1922, Eugene Shaw fell out of a train and was caught under the wheels. The body was then caught in the cow catcher of a second train coming the other way. The pilot (also known as a cow catcher) is the device mounted at the front of a locomotive to deflect obstacles on the track that might otherwise derail the train. Well, that's certainly an antidote to nostalgia, if ever there was one! Happy Halloween! #throwbackthursday #throwback #tbt #kiamaremembers #minnamurra #kiamalibrary Gerringong Historical Museum

23.01.2022 It's National Bird Week (19-25 October) Here is a beautiful photo of a Tawny Frogmouth, captured in the trees of the Illawarra Rainforest. Although these bir...ds are nocturnal, we often spot them hiding in the daytime! They love to camouflage and become part of the tree so you’ve got to look extra close when on our Treetop Walk to spot them. If you'd like to find out more about National Bird Week, visit https://www.birdlife.org.au/.

21.01.2022 Did you know the word ‘Kiama’ is derived from the Aboriginal word ‘Kiarama’ (Ky-a-ra-ma)? Literally meaning ‘where the sea makes a noise’, referencing one of tw...o spectacular blowholes. The biggest, the Kiama Blowhole, can be seen from viewing platforms near our Visitor Information Centre. Its famous ‘whoosh’ sound will give you an idea how Kiama got its name. It’s also famous because it’s the largest in the world! . . . @taylorshillam92 #kiama #kiamablowhole #blowhole #naturelove #visitkiama #southcoast #wanderlust #travel #geologyrocks #southcoastnsw #nsw #love #nature #holidayherethisyear #lovensw Visit NSW Australia.com See more

13.01.2022 Have you ever heard of the Allen Penny of Kiama? It's quite literally priceless ... In the early years of the colony there was very little small change about, s...o shopkeepers and traders often commissioned their own tokens to be made and used as currency in their businesses. John Craven (J.C.) Thornthwaite was the first person to manufacture tokens and medals in Australia. Born in London in 1820, John married in 1848 then migrated to Sydney the following year. His first known token is dated 1850. In 1855, Thornthwaite was commissioned to make some tokens for John Allen’s General Store of Kiama and also for his relative William Allen’s General Store in Jamberoo. The pennies were 34 mm in diameter and made of copper. One side featured the name of the issuer, John Allen (or William Allen) General Stores Kiama (or Jamberoo), surrounding a central image of a rose, shamrock and thistle bouquet. On the other side of the coin it features a rough version of the Coat of Arms of NSW, with ADVANCE AUSTRALIA 1855. Unfortunately, Thornthwaite didn’t have the necessary equipment or raw material to make the tokens with precision, and subsequently both sets of tokens were rejected because of their poor workmanship. After his tokens were rejected, they were 'disposed of by Thornthwaite at a penny each to the toll gatekeeper at Annandale [Sydney], who passed them on in change to the hapless wayfarers' (Andrews, 1921). Tokens were declared illegal in NSW in 1868. Today, the Kiama Allen penny is priceless as there are only four known coins still in existence, one of which resides in the British Museum and one in Museum Victoria. The Jamberoo Allen penny is also among the most desirable of early colonial tokens as there are 25 still in existence, and it has been known to have sold at auction for $6000. Might be a good time to check your change drawers! #throwbackthursday #tbt #throwback #colonialpennies #kiamaremembers #kiamansw #jamberoo #localhistory #kiamalibrary Gerringong Historical Museum
