25.01.2022 Miss last month's TERN webinar on 'standardising environmental information collection: harmonising Australia’s approaches‘? Don't worry, you can watch it (and all previous TERN Ecosystem Observation webinars) via our website: https://www.tern.org.au/events/#archive

25.01.2022 Exciting new MER network pilot announced! During last week's TERN Ecosystem Observations webinar the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment made the exciting announcement of a 3yr project trialling Australia’s first monitoring, evaluation and research (MER) network! We're proud to be a partner in this new initiative that will promote national-scale learning of bushfire recovery and the ecological effectiveness of post-fire interventions. Check out the... project flyer here: https://slideshare.net/TERNCOM/mer-pilot-network-flyer-2020 CSIRO See more

23.01.2022 From modelling weather and predicting fires to understanding human health impacts and monitoring ecosystem recovery, Australia's national research infrastructure (NCRIS) supports bushfire research, recovery and resilience in so many wonderful ways! 23.01.2022 ICYMI, last year we released a new version of the TERN ausplotsR package. It provides free and instant access to a decade of soil and vegetation data collected at >780 environmental monitoring sites across Australia. Find out more: https://www.tern.org.au/news-new-ausplotsr/

22.01.2022 Exciting PhD opportunity on biodiversity and ecosystem service markets within a larger project funded by Queensland Agriculture and Meat & Livestock Australia. If you're interested in biodiversity, restoration and grazing land management contact The University of Queensland's Dr Bradd Witt ASAP: https://researchers.uq.edu.au/researcher/172

21.01.2022 Increasing temperatures and drought frequency may diminish the benefits of fertilisation in managed grasslands. That's the main finding of a recently completed study conducted at 21 research sites around the world, including four of TERN’s, that analysed how nutrient addition affects the ability of soil organisms to process organic matter and how climate modulates this response. The results have significant implications for global land management and carbon budgeting. Read more: https://www.tern.org.au/news-nutnet-grasslandscience/

17.01.2022 Exciting progress by CSIRO and the Smart Sat CRC in the AquaWatch mission. A 12-month scoping study will investigate how satellites in space and a network of ground-based sensors could be used to monitor the quality of Australia’s inland waterways, reservoirs and coastal environments. The AquaWatch Australia mission, being developed by CSIRO, Australia's national science agency and the SmartSat Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) is one of a number of missions - large research... initiatives - aimed at solving Australia's greatest challenges. They are focused on outcomes that lead to positive impact, new jobs and economic growth. In this case, ensuring we can maintain and manage water quality - our most important and vital resource.

16.01.2022 Exciting UQ Science webinar later this month from Dr Helene Muller-Landau of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Panama on the productivity of tropical forests. 25 September 11am AEST Title: Patterns and mechanisms of spatial variation in tropical forest productivity, woody residence time, and biomass. 16.01.2022 More great research using TERN just published! Check out this paper on the vegetation around Adelaide and South Australia. Indicates we are likely to see a gradual change in vegetation due to climate change rather than any big thresholds. https://bit.ly/2VZ34jz

15.01.2022 Digital soil assessment: an essential component of a national ecosystem observatory. National scale soils information is critical for informing decisions across domains in environment, agriculture, engineering, and climate response, and enables researchers to measure changes in Australia’s ecosystems over time from local to continental scales. We talk to outgoing TERN platform co-lead, Mike Grundy, about the immense value digital soil mapping and assessment adds to a national... ecosystem observatory. 12.01.2022 Site of the Month: Alice Mulga SuperSite More than a decade of ecosystem measurements in Australia’s Red Centre are providing an unprecedented understanding of the health and function of Australia’s vast arid ecosystems. The data tell a tale of a tough life in the desert, with highly variable rainfall patterns and carbon dynamics, but of which, thanks to research infrastructure investments, Australia’s scientists are developing an intimate understanding.
