21.01.2022 Today, Minister for Environment, Eva Lawler announced the commitment of $500,000 to roll-out the Gamba Army initiative, a collaborative effort between TNRM and NT Weed Management Branch. We have already been working with many Ranger groups and landholders across parts of the Top End, including West Arnhem Land and Kakadu National Park, to help prevent spread into areas currently free from gamba grass, and controlling it in areas where it has taken a hold. The Gamba Army will ...provide additional resources and an opportunity for jobs for Territorians, to complement existing weed management conducted by private and government land managers. We are proud to be coordinating the Gamba Army, with collaborative management efforts to target areas valued by the community. We look forward to engaging with a range of land managers and users, and commencing work as we head into the wet season, in priority areas such as Litchfield National Park, Casuarina Coastal Reserve and Charles Darwin National Park. Minister Eva Lawler and TNRM's CEO Karen May talked to Matt Brann on the NT Country Hour about the Gamba Army today, Thursday 17 September. 16.01.2022 Today is #threatenedspeciesday As part of the #TSBakeOff, TNRMs Erin Westerhuis made the fabulous central rock rat cake, pictured. "This lovely native rodent is critically endangered and has the dubious honour of being one of the Australian mammal species most likely to go extinct in the near future. It used to be widespread across arid parts of the NT and WA but has been lost from more than 95% of its range. Now the central rock rat is found only in a few sites in the West M...acDonnell Ranges. The key threats to its survival are predation from feral cats and increased frequency and intensity of wildfires" (Erin Westerhuis) With funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, we are working to improve the survival of the central rock-rat through planning, monitoring and active management conducted by scientists, Indigenous rangers, and national park staff. 11.01.2022 Today is national bilby day! Did you know, that our beloved bilby is the only Australian animal with an official gazetted day of celebration. Bilbies are not only culturally important but they also play a vital ecological role as ecosystem engineers. They are a flagship species, which means if we protect them and their habitat, many other animal and plant species will also be protected. ... The greater bilby is an iconic Australian species, but has sadly disappeared from more than 70% of its former range since European settlement. The only other bilby species, the lesser bilby, became extinct around the 1960’s. Through funding from the National Landcare Program, we are working with Indigenous rangers, Traditional Owners and other land managers to help protect the bilby and its habitat in the Northern Territory. Since July 1310km of aerial surveys have been conducted by Indigenous rangers and TNRM ecologists looking for bilby burrows and diggings across the Tanami Desert. Helicopters are used to fly low and slow along pre-planned 35km long transects to search for bilby sign in areas that have not been surveyed in decades and are not readily accessible by vehicle. We have found active bilby burrows and diggings at 13 out of 38 transects and old burrows on nine transects, meaning bilbies might still be in the area. Some of the burrows have been found in areas where no previous records existed. During these surveys we also collect information on the presence of feral animals and details of habitat and fire history to help inform management. Over the next three years, ranger groups and Traditional Owners from across the arid lands of the NT will continue to undertake surveys and implement feral animal and fire management to help protect the bilby. We are fortunate to have a multi talented ecologist / photographer, Kelly Dixon, on our team! We hope you enjoy her photos of the stunning Central Desert! #nationalbilbyday2020 #savethebilby #threatenedspecies #nationallandcareprogram National Landcare Program Central Land Council Threatened Species Commissioner
