08.01.2022 William Street Fence Statement The process for the fencing being erected was initially carried out from a request received from one person. A consultation sign was displayed onsite for public feedback. Responses were received from 4 residents, 3 for & 1 against. I voiced my concerns from day one that we have not engaged properly and need more consultation before a decision was made. Shelly Beach has a long history of conflict between certain stakeholder groups with the co...astal foreshore issues ( this has had legal ramifications in the past). I have contacted QLD Wildlife Sunshine Coast & Shelly Beach Turtle Care reps personally to discuss this fencing issue. Previously at this location there was only a low timber fence. Now we have a new fence, signage and vegetation planted. My intention was to see this vegetation match the height of the already in place spinifex grass to alleviate the sand blowing onto the pathway and not affect the visual amenity. The ocean offers a sense of mental stimulation for enjoyment that should not be overlooked. Opportunities to watch waves breaking over the reef is an attraction that never grows old. Many fisherman, surfers and recreational beach users visit this locality for that experience which should never be taken for granted. A positive outcome can only be achieved with a more proactive form of engagement. Council will be undertaking a program of extensive consultation with groups associated with Shelly Beach early January to understand local needs for an improved foreshore ecology strategy. I am disappointed that this process has created a negative view of Council, it is my intention to work collaboratively with all affected groups, residents and beach users to achieve the best outcome for all involved. I will continue to work with council officers for a suitable outcome. Please regard this as a statement for information purposes only. 08.01.2022 - , Council recently undertook a range of works associated with the renewal of fencing infrastructure at the end of William Street, Shelly Beach. The works were primarily undertaken with a focus on the protection of turtle nesting habitat, but also to help manage the sand blow on to the adjacent pathway. On completion of the fencing renewal works, Council received community requests to consider alternate options to deliver the desir...ed level of protection for nesting turtles at Shelly Beach, while maintaining the visual amenity of the area from public vantage points. Council has given consideration to the feedback received, and as an interim measure has undertaken modification works to remove the shade cloth from the fence. Educational signage has now been placed on the fence immediately adjacent to the four car parking bays at the end of William Street, asking drivers to turn off their lights to help reduce the impacts of light spill onto the beach from public spaces during the turtle nesting season. In early 2021, Sunshine Coast Council will undertake a more detailed investigation of the coastal strip from the southern end of Shelly Beach northward to Tooway Lake. This stretch of coast includes Shelly Beach, Moffatt Headland, and Moffatt Beach itself. The investigation seeks to better understand the values, community perspectives, challenges and opportunities associated with the management of this stretch of coastline, and will help to inform Council management of the area.
