25.01.2022 An update on the sleeping beauty garden. We are just a little bit excited to see this transformation coming to life. A gorgeous, original rock wall (carried by horse and cart at the turn of the century from a property halfway between Orange and Molong) was hidden by mountains of sprawling ivy. We have been steadily working away on this project weekly and have just commenced planting. What a privilege to be helping our wonderful clients restore their garden back to its former glory. #theavidgardenerorange #sleepingbeautygarden #beautifulclients #beautifulgarden #weloveourjob #coolclimategarden #rockwall

25.01.2022 Cue music...working hard to make a living Digging a hole to plant a mature potted bay tree (laurus nobilis) from our friends Stratford Trees. Bays make an excellent screen or feature tree when planted out in the garden. Choose a full sun position in rich well drained soil. The beautiful aromatic leaves can be used for adding depth of flavour to stews, casseroles, soups and stocks. A must have in any cooks garden ... #theavidgardenerorange #screentrees #kitchengarden #larusnobilis #stratfordtrees #jimmybarnes

23.01.2022 Favourite Plants of the Avid Gardeners...Seaside Daisy (erigeron glaucus) One of Pete’s all time favourites (attached pic is from her garden), this gorgeous perennial makes an ideal border, filler for those hard to fill nooks and crannies, an accompaniment to roses and cottage gardens or simply en masse in pots and containers. It’s frost and drought hardy once established, suitable for full sun or part shade and grows well in virtually all climates. Cut back hard in win...ter to maintain shape and encourage flowering. 17.01.2022 We take mental health very seriously at The Avid Gardener. Today is R U OK Day and a great prompter to start a serious conversation with someone that you may be worried about or think might be struggling. Keep the conversation going and remember to check in. There’s loads of information on the R U OK Day page on how to support someone that needs help. 17.01.2022 Spring is the time to feed your garden. I think you all know by now what a huge fan I am of dynamic lifter and Sudden Impact Well, here’s another fantastic product, this time for your natives, Neutrog Bush Tucker. Australian natives are notoriously sensitive to phosphorus and whilst super hardy, will also benefit enormously (giving back with growth, vigour and blooms) to a good dose of fertiliser. This is a complete, organic based, slow release fertiliser. Definitely give it a go. Here is a gorgeous, young Kings Park Callistemon, planted yesterday with a delicious feed of Bush Tucker. Watch this baby grow! #theavidgardenerorange #neutrogbushtucker #springfeed #loveyourgarden #callistemon #australiannatives

16.01.2022 Tulip lovers, eat your heart out Planted en masse in autumn, this spectacular display has about 50 bulbs spaced evenly around the pot in a tight circular pattern. Tulips prefer cool soil over winter so are ideally suited to the Central West, NSW and can be left over summer in the ground. If you live in a warmer climate, it’s important to lift the bulbs once the foliage has browned. They will then need to be left out to dry until the leaves are brittle and can be easily removed. Store the bulbs in an open paper bag in a dark, cool space and plant the following year around Mother’s Day. #theavidgardenerorange #centralwestnsw #tulips #enmasse #spectaculardisplay #bulbs #mothersday #coolclimategardening

15.01.2022 We always get such a buzz watching our clients gardens develop and mature. One of the best things about living in a cool climate is that we experience the full four seasons. This gorgeous rose garden was pruned hard at the end of August. Look at the transformation! Everything is looking spectacular The lovely couple who own this garden have put a lot of love and time into nurturing all their beautiful plants. It’s very much a joint effort here. #theavidgardenerorange #coolclimategardening #beautifulclients #fourseasons #roses #seasidedaisies #lavender #escalonia #centralwestnsw

14.01.2022 Friends that aerate lawn together...with spikey, Cyclone Tools sandals...create lush, beautiful lawns together Aeration (particularly in spring and autumn in cool climates) will encourage oxygen, water and nutrients to reach the roots of your lawn. Follow this up with a good weed and feed and the results will be exponential! #theavidgardenerorange #lawncare #cyclone #aeration #summerready

10.01.2022 Now is the perfect time to apply weed and feed to your lawn. Choose a quality product from a reputable source. We like Yates Australia granular weed ‘n’ feed. Ideally apply it two days before rain is due (apparently this weekend ) and allow it to work it’s magic. Always read the instructions prior to application. #theavidgardenerorange #yates #weednfeed #beautifullawns

09.01.2022 Another lovely progress shot of one of the gardens we have the privilege of working in. This is the beautiful Sleeping Beauty Garden. Standard iceberg roses that have been pruned hard in September, restaked for added strength whilst they continue to establish, and fed with Sudden Impact. Seaside daisies have been planted continuously as a border, and French lavender in between the roses as a visual feature and companion plant to the roses to encourage beneficial insects suc...h as lady birds (a natural predator of aphids) and bees for maximum blooms. The lawn has been aerated, fed and weeded. Escalonia and cherry laurel hedges trimmed and fed in early spring after years of being left, are springing to life. What a pleasure to see the progress and to imagine the sea of purple (lavender) amongst the dainty pink and white daisies, and the elegant pure white roses #theavidgardenerorange #sleepingbeautygarden #coolclimategardening #springhassprung #loveourjob #beautifulclients #centralwestnsw #progress #lavender #frenchlavender #icebergroses #escalonia #seasidedaisy

09.01.2022 On Saturday morning a gorgeous friend and I met at the Orange Farmers Market for coffee, endless chatter and of course beautiful local produce. It’s always exciting to see what’s on offer and to get inspired for the week ahead. I love food! This is what we call a Sunday Night Platter in my home. Essentially an array of food that we all get to choose for dinner. Usually raw veggies, cut up into various shapes, grated, and spiralised, hard boiled eggs, seeds, nuts, herbs, avoca...do, lots of pepper and usually a dollop of plain unsweetened yoghurt and a squeeze of lemon. I get the kids to pick the lettuce from the garden and I’m truly always amazed at how much of the green stuff they actually eat! Mind you, my eldest used to tell me he was allergic to it #theavidgardenerorange #orangefarmersmarkets #localproduce #sundaynight #familyfriendlydinners #anythinggoes #easydinners #fromthegarden

07.01.2022 Two raised garden beds for a very lovely family. One filled with herbs. The other awaiting tomatoes and basil (the perfect companions both in and out of the garden). Pete says after Melbourne Cup. I say a week before. We have discussed robustly at length, put forth our reasonings for each suggestion and come to the conclusion that, like our individual ideas on mint (Pete says in a pot, I say wild and uncontained in the garden!) we will agree to disagree I will say that Pe...te is technically more correct than me (in both instances!!). After Melbourne Cup in cool climate gardening is definitely the rule of thumb for tomato seedlings as the likelihood of a frost has generally passed. I prefer to plant mine a week (sometimes two ) earlier, with a little cover for protection from frosts, as I think the extra time in the ground gives a longer ripening period before the cooler weather hits, which also means more tomatoes . Yes! Either way, our lovely client loves her new raised garden beds!! Something we can all agree on #theavidgardenerorange #birdiesgardenproducts #raisedveggiebeds #coolclimategardening #centralwestnsw #tomatoes #whentoplant? #agreetodisagree #wearestillgreatmates!!!
