19.01.2022 Recognising the signs of a mental health issue All of us will experience sadness, anxiety or worry at times. However, if these unhelpful thoughts are happening regularly and affecting how you feel it could be a warning sign that you may be developing a mental health condition. Do you:... * Feel worried or anxious? * Feel unhappy or depressed for long periods of time? * Have trouble sleeping? * Have difficulty controlling emotions or have emotional outbursts? * Stopped doing things you used to like, or withdraw family and friends? * Use substances like alcohol or drugs to cope? Research tells us that mental illness affects one in five Australians and up to 45 per cent of us will experience some form of mental illness during our lives. The important message here is you are not alone. If you think you, or someone you love, may have a mental health difficulty here's what you can do. Help and Support If you, a friend or a family member is showing signs of the above symptoms then you, or they, need to consult a professional. Start with your local GP they can refer you on to a range of health professionals to get the right support, such as psychiatrist, psychologist, counsellor or community health worker. Lifeline 13 11 14. Better Access. Under this initiative, Medicare rebates are available to patients for selected mental health services provided by general practitioners (GPs), psychiatrists, psychologists (clinical and registered) and eligible social workers and occupational therapists. ReachOut (mental health support for young people) - online help at reachout.com SANE Australia - call 1800 18 7263.

17.01.2022 This years Psychology Week theme explores the role of psychology in helping those who suffer from pain, both acute and chronic. ‘More than a third (35%) of Australians experience chronic pain and for adults 65 years and older that goes up to almost 1 in 2 (49%). Psychological treatments have been found to be effective in improving function and reducing distress associated with pain.’ In a year where we have all faced a number of challenges, mental health support has become a...n even more essential resource for our community. From everyone at TBHG we want to thank all our psychologists for the tremendous amount of resilience and care they have shown throughout 2020 and beyond! For further resources on how psychologists can help with pain and tips for coping with pain go to: https://psychweek.org.au/2020-resources/

15.01.2022 At the Better Health Generation, we firmly believe participating in advocacy is a key driver in changing societal beliefs about mental health. A part of Psychology Week 2019, TBHG applied for and won an Australian Psychological Society (APS) grant to promote what psychology tells us about young peoples feelings, attitudes and beliefs about social justice. The grant allowed us to host an informal morning tea and information session at Hillbrook, a high school in Brisbane, tha...t saw students discuss their perspectives and experiences of mental health and the social issues that are impacting them. It was an incredibly positive experience and one that we were proud to have the opportunity to deliver as members of the APS. Thank you Hillbrook for having us! #mentalhealth #psychweek2019 #hillbrook
