25.01.2022 Many of us are using the COVID-19 border restrictions as an opportunity to explore our own backyards! Did you know that between 1926 and 1949 Hans Heysen did exactly that with eleven adventures to the Flinders Ranges? For later trips he was driven by his son David in a 1928 A20 Model Ford towing this custom-built 1931 camper-trailer their shelter whilst he explored the remarkable valleys and peaks and filled his folio and sketchbooks with drawings and watercolours. Once bac...k home in his studio, he transposed this material into oil and watercolour paintings that have become treasures in numerous public and private collections. Make The Cedars a destination on one of your adventures and see the Model A Ford and remarkable poptop caravan on show in the garage, as well as some of Heysen's original Flinders Ranges pictures. Group bookings welcome. Hahndorf Visit Adelaide Hills Heritage South Australia History Trust of South Australia History Council of South Australia Model A Ford Club of Queensland Inc.

25.01.2022 This exceptional early Hans Heysen landscape was painted around 1897 - when Hans was only about twenty years old, and prior to his 4 years of study in Europe. Notice his signature - not yet the decisive and recognisable mark of his later works. Thank you to a special private collector for allowing us to enjoy this fine work. 23.01.2022 The new Heysen Gallery design process is underway with a wonderful, interactive workshop this week led by our architects, Snohetta. Emotional concepts, storylines, and personal connections to The Cedars were explored by representatives of The Cedars staff, volunteers, board members, Heysen descendants, donors, and contributing community members creating a rich foundation of understanding for Snohetta to draw from as they commence their design work. 23.01.2022 From time to time visitors bring their Heysen artworks to The Cedars sometimes to be assessed, occasionally as a bequest or donation, other times just so we can appreciate them! From a private collection, this 1936 Nora Heysen oil on canvas entitled "London Flowers" recently paid a visit to The Cedars. A superb still life, we remarked at how similar it was to "A Blue Hyacinth" from the estate of Richard Ward Law-Smith, an image of which we posted last week. Both would have been painted whilst Nora was living in London, and likely framed by the same framer. "London Flowers" was much admired as it rested briefly on the artist's easel in her studio. 20.01.2022 We're often asked how many roses there are at The Cedars and we honestly couldn't tell you! What we can share is that there are roses here that date from the 1920s - still flourishing. In fact Hans Heysen struck many himself from cuttings he took from the Hahndorf Cemetery. Come and visit whilst they are in bloom and help us count the number! 20.01.2022 Every Friday night during the mid to late 1950s Nora Heysen joined a private drawing group in Hunters Hill, Sydney to "draw from the model". This work on paper in red conte was bequested to her Foundation collection and is housed at The Cedars, Hahndorf. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of her work from that period. 15.01.2022 The seventh in our series of Thursday posts on Hans Heysen's winning entries to one of Australia's long-running art prizes, The Wynne Prize. Heysen won the Wynne Prize a remarkable 9 times in his lifetime. Heysen's seventh winning artwork was "The Farmyard, Frosty Morning in 1926, two years after his win in 1924 with "An Afternoon in Autumn". These followed his wins with "Mystic Morning" in 1904, "Summer" in 1909, "Hauling Timber" in 1911, "The Toilers" in 1920, and "The Quar...ry" in 1922. In September 2019, The Farmyard, Frosty Morning was auctioned by Bonhams as a part of "Fairwater: The Collection of Sir Warwick and Lady Fairfax AC OBE". It sold for a record AU$341,600 (US$ 235,505) inc. premium. As reviewed in The Argus in 1926, 'The Wynne Art Prize for this year has been awarded by the trustees of the National Gallery of New South Wales to Mr Hans Heysen for his oil painting "The Farmyard Frosty Morning". The Picture was shown at the exhibition of the Society of Artists in September, and was purchased by Sir James Fairfax. It attracted attention as one of the features of this exhibition because of the artist's masterly treatment of strong, clear, early sunshine and sharply contrasting shadows over a sloping foreground, where cattle are reposing almost beneath two trees to the left of the scene. The trees, cattle, and the farm buildings to the right are admirably balanced against the gently rising background, with its straggling bush and wisps of morning mist.'(1) It is hard to fault the judges. The Farmyard, Frosty Morning is an outstanding portrayal from an artist at the peak of his powers, Heysen himself declaring it his 'best picture to date'(2). Painted at Edwards Farm, an early settler's property just outside Hahndorf, Heysen uses sharp contrasting yet restrained tones to capture the early morning chill. In 1935, The Art Gallery of New South Wales staged a major loan exhibition allowing Heysen to reacquaint himself with numerous artworks including the present painting, a somewhat surprised Heysen noted in a letter to his daughter, Norah on the 13th June 1935, 'I promised to tell you more of my show in Sydney... Several pictures came as a pleasant surprise. The Farmyard, Frosty Morning looked crisp and cold and convincing. It's somewhat stiff forms suited the time of day and the cold air'(3) 1.'Wynne Art Prize', The Argus, Melbourne, 22 December 1926, p. 22 2. 13.01.2022 The eighth in our series of Thursday posts on Hans Heysen's winning entries to one of Australia's long-running art prizes, The Wynne Prize. Heysen won the Wynne Prize a remarkable 9 times in his lifetime. It was with a bequest of Richard Wynne that this prize was established in 1897 in honour of the official opening of the Art Gallery of NSW and is awarded annually to the 'the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or for the best example of fig...ure sculpture by Australian artists'. Heysen's eighth winning artwork was "Red Gums of the Far North" in 1931, five years after his win in 1926 with "The Farmyard, Frosty Morning". These followed his wins with "Mystic Morning" in 1904, "Summer" in 1909, "Hauling Timber" in 1911, "The Toilers" in 1920, "The Quarry" in 1922, and "An Afternoon in Autumn" in 1924. 10.01.2022 This is our ninth and final Thursday post in our series on Hans Heysen's winning entries to one of Australia's long-running art prizes, The Wynne Prize. Heysen won the Wynne Prize a remarkable 9 times in his lifetime. It was with a bequest of Richard Wynne that this prize was established in 1897 in honour of the official opening of the Art Gallery of NSW and is awarded annually to the 'the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or for the best e...xample of figure sculpture by Australian artists'. Heysen's final winning artwork in the Wynne Prize was "Brachina Gorge" in 1932, just a year after his win with "Red Gums of the Far North" in 1931. These followed his wins with "Mystic Morning" in 1904, "Summer" in 1909, "Hauling Timber" in 1911, "The Toilers" in 1920, "The Quarry" in 1922, and "An Afternoon in Autumn" in 1924, and "The Farmyard, Frosty Morning" in 1926. "Brachina Gorge" is currently held in a private collection, having been auctioned at Sotheby's European and Australian Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture sale in Sydney in April 1994 for a hammer price of AU$55,000. Heysen was capitivated by the Flinders Ranges: "It is a fascinating part of our country distinct from anything in Australia, and it is crying out to be painted. No one that I know of has attempted it" (Hans Heysen, 1927). He returned repeatedly to capture its unique landforms as seen in: "In the Brachina Gorge" 1928, "The Sentinel, Brachina Gorge" 1931, "Brachina Gorge" 1933 (in the collection of the Queen Mother), "The Guardian of Brachina Gorge, Heysen Range" 1935, "Guardian of the Brachina Gorge" 1937, "Brachina Gorge" 1944, "Sunrise on the Guardian of the Brachina Gorge, Aroona" 1944, "In the Brachina Country, Flinders Ranges" 1952, "The Brachina Gorge" 1955. Hans Heysen wrote in 1914: The beauty of the gum is a quiet beauty It is a poets tree, a painters tree But even in my short stay of five years in Hahndorf thousands of acres have been cut down for firewood and many of my old favourites have gone. In fact so often has this happened that I approach them with caution so as to make myself as little conspicuous as possible... when painting themit seems that the mere fact of my admiring a tree seems to draw the owners attention to its usefulness for firewood.
