25.01.2022 My daughter Keelin grew up working @thechildrensbookshop . She understands the magic of books and the joy of reading. Keelin now manages a Child Friendly Space in a Refugee Camp in Greece. I love this small library that Keelin and her team are building. It’s a tough time in our world-I hope that these books may in some way help to change lives. Proud of you @keelinstaygold @lighthouserelief @bethanymacdonaldartist @thefictive #paulsbooktrail2020 #thechildrensbookshopspeakersagency

22.01.2022 Paul’s Book Trail 2020 No. 197 I’m a big fan of much acclaimed Aussie author Richard Flanagan. He is a passionate writer whose work can be raw and difficult and ugly and poetic and beautiful- all on a single page. I finished this last night and started rereading again this morning. Flanagan’s latest novel is a confronting snapshot of Australia (and the world) today, a call for stillness and reflection- and a call for action. I think I love this book. ‘In a world of perennial... fire and growing extinctions, Anna’s aged mother is dyingif her three children would just allow it. Condemned by their pity to living she increasingly escapes through her hospital window into visions of horror and delight. When Anna’s finger vanishes and a few months later her knee disappears, Anna too feels the pull of the window. She begins to see that all around her others are similarly vanishing, but no one else notices. All Anna can do is keep her mother alive. But the window keeps opening wider, taking Anna and the reader ever deeper into a strangely beautiful story about hope and love and orange-bellied parrots.’ #paulsbooktrail2020 @penguinbooksaus #richardflanagan @thefictive @bethanymacdonaldartist @paulmacsculpture See more

07.01.2022 Paul’s Book Trail220 No. 204 I love biographies and Searching for Charlotte is one to watch. This is the story of Charlotte Atkinson, Australia’s first children’s author and also the great great great great grandmother of acclaimed contemporary authors Kate Forsyth and Belinda Murrell. Written with passion and a sense of wonder, Forsyth and Murrell share the narrative - and ultimately offer an intimate tale of family, history, gender and the writing process. And the book desi...gn is beautiful! If secondary schools are looking for writers to discuss life-writing, contact Beth at [email protected] Kate and Belinda are talented writers. ‘For almost 140 years, the author of Australia's first book for children was a mystery. Known only by the descriptor 'a Lady Long Resident in New South Wales', she was the subject of much speculation. It was not until 1980, after a decade of sleuthing, that legendary bibliographer Marcie Muir gave her a name: Charlotte Waring Atkinson. And not only a name, but an extensive creative family history, connecting her to two of the nation's celebrated contemporary children's writers, Kate Forsyth and Belinda Murrell. To Forsyth and Murrell, Atkinson (also known as Barton) is great-great-great-great grandmother and the subject of the stories they grew up on-part of a thread of creative women that runs through the history of their family. Hers is one of the great lost stories of Australian history: a tale of love, grief, violence and triumph in the face of overwhelming odds.’ #paulsbooktrail2020 @thefictive @nationallibraryaus @belinda_murrell @paulmacsculpture #kateforsyth See more

03.01.2022 Paul’s Book Trail 2020 No. 202 The Odds by Aussie writer/ illustrator Matt Stanton is a top read. This is a graphic novel for kids aged 7 plus - and is a great read along for parents because of its humour and because of its heart. I loved it and look forward to the second book in the trilogy! ‘Kip is a quiet kid in a loud city. She's easy to miss and that's the way she likes it. Then, one day, Kip's quiet life is suddenly interrupted. Ten of her favourite characters have ste...pped out of their worlds and into hers. But what happens when a dragon-hunting rabbit leaves his comic strip? When an old man leaves his picture book? When a ninja leaves her TV show, a race-car driver leaves their video game, and a dinosaur turns up from Kip's nightmares?’ #paulsbooktrail2020 @thefictive @itsmattstantonhere @bethanymacdonaldartist @paulmacsculpture See more

03.01.2022 At Book Trail Press, we are very excited to be publishing the latest picturebook by the dazzling team of Ursula Dubosarsky and Tohby Riddle. That book, titled The March of the Ants, is a story about ants and books and the power of reading. This morning, Beth and I met illustrator Tohby Riddle to check the final colour proofs of the picturebook before sending it off to the printers. The good news is that the book is absolutely gorgeous- texts and illustrations are paired so beautifully. We are looking forward to introducing this picturebook (and others) into the world in 2021. 01.01.2022 Reflecting on the Year...There is no doubt that Middle Grade fiction rules, books that bridge Upper Primary and Junior Secondary readers (aged 10-14). And these are my top 6 for the year (too hard to reduce to my top 5!). Top of the pile has to be We are Wolves by @katrina_nannestad - this is historical fiction at its best! Social realism rules with The Year the Maps Changed by @dbinks and The Book of Chance @suewhiting4 - I loved these titles. @macdibble continues to dazzle... with Across the Risen Sea- Bren owns the junior cli-fi genre. The Fire Star is the beginning of a top medieval-adventure-mystery series @allisontaitwriter . Finally @affirmpress continues to publish top notch books with The Grandest Bookshop in the World by Amelia Mellor, a magical tale spun around a dazzling bookshop.
