24.01.2022 WHAT TO DO IF YOU MISS OUT ON A GRADUATE POSITION Many of the larger corporates, banks and professional service firms offer vacation clerkships and graduate programs. If you are successful in entering these programs, they are a great stepping stone into an organisation and industry. However, the global financial crisis has affected many organisations, particularly their head count. The number of graduate positions offered per year has been reduced meaning there are a large ...number of students competing for fewer positions. Inevitably, many talented students will miss out. But it’s not the end of the world. It’s time to look at your options and turn this into a great opportunity! 1.Consider smaller organisations Smaller accounting/law firms and corporates often don’t have structured graduate programs. They will hire a graduate when their business needs require it. Start researching these smaller companies and be proactive in calling/sending a letter/email asking for opportunities. 2. Consider opportunities in your current job Are you working in a call centre of a bank? Check-out at Safeway? Kitchen work at Nandos? Start using your existing relationships to see if there are any opportunities in head office or the larger group. It may not be your ideal start, but any professional/managerial experience is valuable and you never know where it might lead. 3. Step away from where you started You’re studying accounting/ finance and always dreamed of working in investment banking or corporate finance for example. If you didn’t get into a bank graduate program, start looking at corporates that have large internal finance groups, subsectors such as financial planning/financial advisory/superannuation or the funding arms of government organisations. Finally, consider your CV. Can it be improved? Think about your interview experiences and what could have been done better. Make sure that your application arsenal is in top form for the next opportunity. If you’re not sure, please come and see us we've been there and we can help.

21.01.2022 What do I have to do to be eligible for a 457 visa? The 457 visa is one of the most popular and talked about visas in the media. A 457 visa is a temporary visa that requires employer sponsorship. The threshold for entry is lower than most other work visas as there is no age limit and only vocational English is required (ie. score 5 in each band of the IELTS test). Your occupation must be on the Skilled Occupation List. The minimum salary that can be paid to a 457 visa ho...lder is $53,500 (being the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold) and the terms and conditions of employment must be no different to that of an Australian citizen/PR performing the same work. If you work for the same employer for more than 2 years, you may be eligible for permanent residency. 19.01.2022 TOP TEN INTERVIEW TIPS We are often asked for our top tips on succeeding at interviews. Every industry is different and obviously every interviewer is unique. An approach that may be appropriate when applying for a quantitative analyst role in a bank may not be appropriate for a client-facing advisory role. There are however some common dos and don’ts that are applicable to all interviews. Here are our top ten: 1. Be on time. Try to arrive 10 minutes earlier if possible ...to gather your thoughts before the interview starts. 2. Pay attention to your appearance and ensure it is appropriate for the organisation. 3. Research the role and the organisation thoroughly. 4. Prepare questions you will ask during the interview and mentally check whether they are still relevant or have been answered during the interview. 5. Anticipate any technical questions specific to that industry. 6. Maintain eye contact while you are speaking to the interviewer. 7. Listen carefully to the interviewer’s questions and ensure you understand what they are asking. 8. Be familiar with your CV. Be ready to describe or elaborate on responsibilities, skills or particular projects. 9. Try to establish a genuine rapport with the interviewer remember that you want them to feel that you will be a good fit with the team and will get along with others easily. 10. Look relaxed, confident and remember to smile (even if you don’t feel this way!).

13.01.2022 SPONSORING PARENTS TO AUSTRALIA Question: I am a permanent resident living and working in Australia but my parents are still living in overseas. I would like them to come to Australia but they are old, have poor English, limited skills and limited financial resources. What are their options?... Answer: The only option if they are not eligible for any investment or retirement visa is for you to sponsor them under a parent visa. In the past, overseas parents of permanent residents or Australian citizens could apply for a parent visa, pay a visa fee of approximately $4,500 and wait to come to Australia (waiting time was 13 years). The Department of Immigration is no longer accepting these visa applications. From 1 July 2014, the only visa available for offshore parents is a Contributory Parent visa which generally involves a two-step process (wait time is up to 24 months). Firstly, a temporary visa is granted incurring a visa fee, of approximately $30,000. After 2 years, a permanent visa is granted incurring a visa fee of approximately $20,000. All parents must also be of good character and good health to be accepted. If you require further information about family sponsorship, please email [email protected] or see www.elmtreemigration.com.au Disclaimer: Do not rely on this article as legal advice. The migration law has been summarised for this media article. Each person’s circumstances are different and you should seek legal advice for your specific situation.

08.01.2022 Happy Chinese New Year from The Cover Letter! Wishing you all a prosperous, healthly and successful year ahead.

07.01.2022 Question: I am a postgraduate student studying at Monash University in Victoria and I will finish my studies soon. My student visa will also expire soon. I would like to stay in Australia to work as a permanent resident. What are my options? Answer: Firstly, you must apply for a new visa before your student visa expires otherwise you risk being in Australia unlawfully which may have consequences for future visa applications.... There are many options available for you but it will depend on how old you are, your English abilities, your occupation and whether you have any experience in your field of work. If your occupation is on the Skilled Occupation List and you have competent English (must score minimum 6 on the IELTS) and a few years work experience, you may be able to work here under one of the visas in the General Skilled Migration program (eg. 189 or 190 visas). You may also be able to work here permanently if an Australian employer will sponsor you (eg. 186 or 187 visa). There are certain requirements for the employer but it does not have to be a large corporate - even a sole trader can sponsor you. At a minimum, you must have competent English and at least 3 years full time work experience (which can include overseas experience). If you have limited work experience, you may be eligible for certain graduate visas which will allow you to stay for another 2-4 years. If you happen to have met a boyfriend/girlfriend who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you could also consider a partner visa! For advice on your specific circumstances, contact [email protected] or go to www.elmtreemigration.com.au for more details.
