Over 340 guests witnessed the "story so far' delivered professionally by Jemma Smith Rachelle King Brad Woodward and @nicolalmcdermott who all warmly added what it personally mean't to them to be a Scholarship holder of the Foundation and how the support has assisted them to chase their dreams. Special thanks to Jean Ferguson for setting up the room, Lucy Thackray for taking happy snaps on the night including those in this post and to Terry Chigwidden for preparing the athlete video presentation and to Rod Amos our longstanding and beloved auctioneer. Thanks Steve and Susannah Mirana and band Thanks to our board members Say a Few Words and Michael Buettner for keeping the guests entertained and informed. Finally, the Clarke family and all the Board members sincerely thank our guests and supporters who attended the night and put their well earned to good use. 17.01.2022 Congrats to scholarship holder #9 Rob McIntyre on an incredible career RETIREMENT POST Its been a while since I’ve raced competitively and it has been a good time to reflect on everything. I’ve realised that I don’t have the spark to get after it and race at a high level anymore. I first picked up a paddle as a toddler on family river camping trips and although I didn’t take to it instantly, I was always intrigued by it. ... In my early teenage years I started competing at schools events in slalom kayaks before going to a national championships and seeing people paddling Wildwater kayaks, which drew my attention in a big way! I remember being in New Zealand as a 14 year old, supporting Alex, who was in an Australian development team. I raced in one of the Aussie teams to fill in some numbers which was a nice experience, but I was way off the pace and restricted that particular team from getting a good result. I remember being a bit embarrassed. It fired me up for the next 18 months to improve and make the Junior Worlds team, which I was successful in doing. The rest was history. My family and friends have been the backbone and the reason I was able to do what I did. The sacrifice of their time and money, all in the belief that I could be a champion is something I will always be grateful for! I was national champion in three different paddle disciplines and represented Australia in two of them. I want to share some of my favourite sporting memories and will do so over the next couple of weeks. It’s not to boast, it’s just for reflection, to share stories and to thank people that made these moments happen. I will still be around every now and then for a paddle and will line up to go around the cans occasionally. I won’t be ‘all in’ like I once was. My focus has shifted. I have a beautiful daughter and fiancé that are my world! I’m a horticulturalist that’s eager to learn more. It’s no longer my priority to leave work at 3pm each day to train and spend months of the year away touring with sport. I’ve had a blast, I love paddling, but I’ve had my time and achieved some things I never thought I would when I first started. On to the next chapter, thanks for the memories! Yours in sport, Rob See more
