19.01.2022 Here in Canada - on November 11th at 11am - we honour those who have fought for our freedom and those that are serving. Remembrance Day is a national holiday. ...The symbol of Remembrance Day is the poppy. The poem "In Flanders Fields" was written during the First World War by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. He was inspired to write it on May 3, 1915, after presiding over the funeral of friend and fellow soldier Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second Battle of Ypres. We're starting a new series looking at the representation of the poppy in needlework. This piece features poppies and is the work of noted embroiderer, teacher, author and art historian. You can see more of Richard's work on his website at http://www.richardbox.co.uk/ #poppies #RemembranceDay #embroidery

17.01.2022 This piece of bridal embroidery is worked with a tambour hook. It's also known as Point de Beauvais embroidery. Tambour bead embroidery is a technique with a l...ong history - going back to the 1500s in Europe. Tambour work arrived in Europe from Asia with the finest examples being imported from India, Persia (now Iran) and China. 14.01.2022 This photo shows Venetian needle lace being made on the island of Burano (located in the Venice lagoon). In the 16th century, Venetian needle lace making was pr...oduced by noblewomen in the privacy of their own homes. By the 17th century, other European nations struggled to emulate the women of Burano’s intricate designs. The lace was highly sought after. The court of King Louis XIV of France employed several Venetian lace makers to teach their skill and facilitate home manufacturing. The photo was taken at the Burano Lace Museum (Museo del Merletto) by Avital Pinnick at https://www.flickr.com//spindexr/7419158170/in/photostream/ #needlelace #InProgress

11.01.2022 When we first featured this post - many people thought these were embroidered masks. And, it's easy to see why. These sweet, hand embroidered baby bonnets are ...the work of a Latvian embroidery artist who sells her work on Etsy. The fabric is linen and the bonnet is embroidered with wool thread. Just perfect for cool days to keep babies warm and then in Summer, to keep them cool. Image courtesy of https://www.etsy.com//linen-baby-bonnet-with-embroidered-f #embroidery #babybonnets

06.01.2022 This child's embroidered organdy coat dates to ca.1910. Organdy is a plain-weave, very light, semi-transparent textile woven from cotton. It is then treated up... to three different ways for either a permanent or semi-permanent finish. This finish is what gives it its stiffness - a similar treatment to starching. Despite it's delicate look, because of its high thread count and fabric finish, it's actually a dream to embroider on. This item was for sale (now sold) at https://www.vintagetextile.co #embroidery #whitework
