25.01.2022 The Importance of Winter Grooming The winter chill has set in and our fur friends are feeling the cold with us!! Over the winter months there is a temptation to put grooming on hold until the weather warms up again - but a longer coat is far more susceptible to matting. Grooming your dog through the winter months doesnt mean the coat needs to be clipped short. We can give your pooch a lovely fluffy teddy bear style that will have them looking adorable and provide extra war...mth. You can also opt to bring your dog in for a regular bath and brush out or mini-groom (bath and brush out with an eye area, feet and sanitary trim). The most important thing to remember is that you want to keep your pets coat free from matting. What is matting? Matting refers to densely tangled clumps of fur in a pets coat. If a coat is not properly and/or frequently brushed, loose and live hair become embedded in large masses. A matted coat can be painful and uncomfortable for your pet- the skin is pulled tight - and a matted coat can cut off blood circulation to extremities. A matted coat stops air circulation to the skin, and the skin underneath can become unhealthy. A matted coat that gets wet does not dry - and the wet fur sitting against the animals skin will cause irritation and weaken the skin. Sores and rashes can form which will not be visible with out removing the coat. A wet matted coat will keep your dog constantly cold in the winter. Minor matting can sometimes be brushed out after the coat has had a deep conditioning treatment, and with the aid of de-matting serums and specialised tools. Even brushing out minor matting is time-consuming. We will only de-matt your dogs coat if it will not cause pain or stress to your pet. It is far kinder to shave a matted coat, and then get your pet a jumper to keep them warm. Removing a matted coat requires expertise and patience. The skin underneath a tightly matted coat will be delicate, and removing the coat is time consuming and can be quite painful. This can all be avoided with regular brushing and grooming.
