25.01.2022 Are the worlds agriculture and food systems capable of sustainable meeting the needs of a growing global population?

24.01.2022 We collect data on the physical, chemical and biological condition of soil, implement precise management plans and follow the long term improvements to the soil condition and its ability to provide sustainable plant growth.

22.01.2022 ENDANGERED EARTH: THE SECRET BATTLE TO SAVE OUR SOILS We cant bury our heads in the sand any longer. More than a third of Earths top layer is at risk. Is there hope for our planets most precious endangered species? FIND the places where farms give way to the California wilderness and youre sure to encounter an endangered species. It is not aggressive, but it is omnivorous, devouring anything that happens to fall dead within its reach. And like most rare beasts, the extinc...tion of Abruptic durixeralfs would have cascading impacts on the ecosystem around it. Dont be misled by the name. This is neither animal nor plant nor microbe, but a subgroup of soils. Its members nonetheless slot into a classification system every bit as elaborate as that we use to categorise life forms. In the US alone, more than 20,000 soils have been catalogued. Many are facing extinction. It may seem like madness to speak of soils going extinct, but more than a third of the worlds top layer is endangered, according to the UN, which declared 2015 the International Year of Soils. This December, it will release a much-anticipated report on the state of the worlds dirt. The news wont be good: we are losing soil at a rate of 30 soccer fields a minute. If we dont slow the decline, all farmable soil could be gone in 60 years. Given soil grows 95 per cent of our food, and sustains human life in other more surprising ways, that is a huge problem. Many would argue soil degradation is the most critical environmental threat to humans, says Peter Groffman, who studies soil microbes at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York. Yet all is not quite lost. The degradation of the worlds dirt has been a disaster in slow motion. https://www.newscientist.com//mg22830423-300-endangered-e/

19.01.2022 Soils are as essential to human society as air and water.

19.01.2022 THANK YOU to all that attended the Switch Your Thinking, Soil Secrets series of talks for Science Week. I hope you picked up some helpful tips. If youd like further information or a review of the Soil Science presentation please go to http://atomearth.com.au/resources.html

18.01.2022 Heres a good read and very much in the spirit of MicroBlitzs new collaboration with Professor Barry Marshall looking at soil microbes in remote Western Austra...lia and their effects on human health. And if you didnt already know the Barry Marshall Centre also has started its own citizen science project, The Noisy Gut Project, and is recruiting volunteers to record their gut noises in the interests of understanding and improving gut health: http://crowdresearch.uwa.edu.au/project/noisy-guts-project/ See more

17.01.2022 We aim to raise awareness about the importance of soil, soil science and how we should treat and protect our soil as a precious and finite resource. We are working with other companies worldwide and the data we collect will aid in improving best practice techniques for gardeners, horticulturalists, agriculturalists, governments, urban planners, and agronomists.

15.01.2022 "When you exceed the [plant] systems capacity to use that nitrogen fertiliser, the efficiency goes out the window, and the nitrogen can leak out of the cycle," Professor Eckard said.

14.01.2022 Interested in testing your soil? We recently attended the launch of Soil Doctors - a Perth service that can provide you with a comprehensive list of availabl...e nutrients & indicators of what your soil may be lacking. Usually $189, as an introductory special until the end of November its only $126. Contact them directly via www.soildoctors.com.au or samples can be dropped off @ GLSC. See more

10.01.2022 EFFECTIVE IS DOING THE RIGHT THINGS, WHILST EFFICIENT IS DOING THINGS RIGHT. Efficiency is the ability to avoid wasting materials, energy, efforts, money, and t...ime in doing something or in producing a desired result. Farmers go to great lengths to ensure they grow efficiently and achieve the maximum output (yields) with the minimum inputs. As gardeners we tend to do the opposite. Pouring on copious amounts of fertilsers (organic and inorganic), soil amendments, compost etc..We may find it effective but was it all necessary and have we considered the effect excesses may have on sustaining the health of our soils and groundwater? 09.01.2022 S.AVE O.UR S.OILS On the attest and driest inhabited continent on earth; one which is drought prone, subject to extremely variable weather patterns, and which has the worlds oldest and least fertile soilswe need to be scientic in our approach to soil management. We all need to get involved to change the way we manage and protect our precious resources - SOIL & WATER.

08.01.2022 Autumn is a great time to test your #soil. The soil is still relatively dry, there is a minimal build-up of organic material and it gives you time to adjust nutrient levels before the new growing season. image: Hyde Park by Adam Monk

01.01.2022 ....thinking of soil organic matter as having two major components. The first is called "particulate organic matter," made up of lightweight, partly decomposed plants and fungi residues that are short-lived and not well protected. The second is "mineral-associated organic matter," largely made of byproducts of the decomposition of microbes that chemically bind to minerals in the soil. This type of matter is more resilient and able to persist in the ground for centuries.
