25.01.2022 Prime Ministerial visit to THOR HQ: Part 1 It was an honour to host the Prime Minister and his wife Lady Rachael at THOR HQ this week. The Prime Minister officially launched our television program ‘It Takes A Village’, and we discussed the catalyst for the program and the community impact. Through television, we have been able to promote community discussion about maternal health and the importance of women in the community in a format that is entertaining and engaging. #ittakesavillage #maternalhealth #thor #drbarrykirby #flyingdoctor

25.01.2022 This is what loading 50 mother incentive gifts looks like! We moved the production inside the hanger as there was a torrential rain storm outside. These gifts are bound for Dogura health centre. #thor #flyingdoctor

23.01.2022 Prime Ministerial visit to THOR HQ: Part 2 Reliable communication is one of the greatest challenges we face in servicing the most remote parts of the Milne Bay Province. We recently upgraded our comms at THOR HQ to the Codan Xmatch HF-VHF radio and can now receive calls from all over PNG at the hangar. We are now truly a 24/7 alarm centre flying doctor. Sr Kila is our radio tech expert and even coordinated the Prime Minister to speak (during his visit to THOR HQ this week) with all the remote Milne Bay health centres on the radio at once, from Alotau to Jingo Health Centre 220 miles away. (Apologies for the video quality!) #thor #flyingdoctor #srkila #drbarrykirby

17.01.2022 Taxiing in to Esa’ala earlier in the week. Luckily the weather was kind to us! #flyingdoctor #seaplane #floatplane #drbarrykirby

13.01.2022 Last chance to donate before EOFY. Every dollar donated goes such a long way and will provide life-saving support to people in need. Support our cause today, and deduct it at EOFY on 30 June. Any amount helps - use this link to donate: https://www.thehandsofrescue.org.au/donation/

12.01.2022 This week we received a call from Sehulea to say they had two mothers needing urgent transfer to hospital. One mother had been attacked by a crocodile and had a penetrating wound to the abdomen, the other mother had a episode of bleeding at 35 weeks (placenta previa). We landed in Sehulea Bay which was calm luckily as the weather leaving Alotau was strong winds, showers and low cloud - we nearly turned back. Both mothers were airlifted and are recovering well. #thor #flyingdoctor #drbarrykirby #sisterkila

12.01.2022 We flew over the mountains and into Aguan this week to deliver a bed and some medicines. A nice Independence Day gift to people in Agaun. #thor #flyingdoctor #drbarrykirby

09.01.2022 We flew into Walagi on Wednesday. It was blowing 25-30 knots outside the bay and seas were mountainous with white spray. We were called to medevac two mothers trapped by the bad weather. After a fairly treacherous trip home we landed safely back at base. The ambulance driver from the hospital met us on the airstrip (pictured with Kila and the mamas). It truly does take a village to get the job done! Kila gave the mamas our signature Baby Bundle gift for coming to the health centre for a supervised delivery. If the mothers had decided to stay in the village to have their babies, their lives and their babies lives were at stake. The THOR team are so happy they made a wise decision. #babybundlegift #thor #supervisedbirths

08.01.2022 We have the most incredible, thoughtful and loyal community. Our sincere thanks to Lou, Patrick and Mama Eileen for these beautiful handmade baby blankets. I know how challenging times are for everyone around the world at the moment, and for you to still support our work to help reduce materials deaths in PNG means the world to us. Forever grateful.

07.01.2022 More from Walagi: Kila with Walagi health staff while waiting for mothers to arrive from across the bay. A small gathering came to see what's happening. You can see "sunshine house" mothers waiting house under mango tree in the background. #flyingdoctor #thor #walagi

05.01.2022 Please donate blood! We had an emergency call this morning at 7am for an Esa'ala mother with severe anaemia from retained placenta. The hospital had no blood in the bank so we had to donate(lucky I'm group O). I would encourage all Alotau people to donate blood today. Your donation could help save a life! #thor #flyingdoctor #donateblood #savealife

04.01.2022 Medevac to Budoya: There is always a big crowd of helpers ready to assist on our arrival. We managed to berth at the jetty this time as it was high tide. We were attending a mother who had an obstructed labour with cord prolapse. Quite often the baby dies as the cord constricts when exposed to outside air. The sisters at Budoya covered it with warm gauze and Sr Kila further applied a warm pad in transit on the flight. On arrival at Alotau hospital, Dr. Grace Kariwiga and HEO Alice Siwawata performed emergency caesar and mother and baby survived. #flyingdoctor #maternalhealth #ittakesavillage

01.01.2022 Last week at Walagi....School children come out and watch from their playground when the Beaver flies over head. I think the teacher dismisses the class because the whole school turns out to watch the Beaver land! #thor #flyingdoctor #walagi #png
