24.01.2022 The very first settlers in the Ferry Hills was William John Chapman in 1882 on Portion 1120 followed closely by Frances Lavering on Portion 1110. The Ferry Hills school was gazetted by the government in 1903 on Portion 1268 which was owned by Frederick and Suzanna Aulfry. The Ferry Hills school was named after the property that they had at the time. This has been identified with a newspaper clipping about the auction of that property in 1916. All of the second round of the properties had been settled by the time the school was gazetted and there were some 250 students went to the school from 1903 - 1956 when it closed.
24.01.2022 Hi All, It has been awhile since my last post. Like everyone else I am in mostly lock down. My book has slowed down alittle due to government departments shut downs. I am waiting for them to reopen so I can visit them for information that I can get from them for the book. On the positive side of things I have had extra time going backwards to re-read my information and I have found some holes that I hope to fill in. So my deadline has been thrown out just a little and will now be later in the year. So if I have informed you about reading some proofing, it will be later this year depending on the virus. So keep watching this space and if you want to contact me please do so either mobile or PM.
23.01.2022 It's ANZAC day one day we should all be proud of and remember all who gave their time and lives. Lest we forget
21.01.2022 The original house on Portion 1156 originally owned by Charles Frederick Thiele who came out from Germany in 1863 and his family settled at Moolboolman. This house was built by my Great Grandfather and his two sons, Alex Jnr and William which was the original wooden house. There was a tin or corrigated iron house which I believe that Charles Thiele Snr built when he was working the quarry. When Charles William Jnr took this property over in 1910 that was when ' Westella' was built and he lives there until in 1923 when Alex Snr, Alex Jnr and William bought the whole property from Charles Thiele Jnr.

08.01.2022 Please pass on my page to all the people you know who may have knowledge of Ferry Hills
07.01.2022 My time since returning home from my archives trip has been hectic cataloguing all that information and documents. When I recorded it down there I only browsed through them all but now reading every page of the documents and the information is staggering. Not all will make the book but the history of it will. I have outsourced a printer here in Townsville and next step is proof reading. So Dec deadline is out of the question now but family drafts started to be given to family representatives. So look in your email if you are one of those. Thanking you all in advance for your patience and understanding.
07.01.2022 Ferry Hills school played a very important part of the community. Gazetted by the government in 1903 as a Provisional School and changed later to a State School it became a social point of that area. The first school closed around 1934 and sold, when the second school was built down the hill from the first school. There was around 250 students went to school at Ferry Hills from 1903 - 1956 when the second school closed. All the students went by bus to school the next year only to see their school had been rebuilt as the Headmaster office and living area. If you recognise yourself or any of the students in these photos please contact me by message or mobile 0432329902.
06.01.2022 Well it has been many, many months thanks to COVID -19 but I have now just spent two weeks at the Archives in Brisbane and believe me it was well worth the time and energy to visit and see for myself the information that I could access. I now can finish the sections of my book with more detail and information. I hope to have the draft copy of their family ready in the next few months then off to the printers. I am now getting very excited about what has been a long journey.
06.01.2022 Well I have just about researched the hell out of Ferry Hills and all the properties involved. Now to start putting all this into the many many stories that will be the history of Ferry Hills. So far on time. I need a new publisher in Townsville as I will not be able to travel down south until they open the travel lockdown bans. So next post will be around end of May and see how I am going by then. Happy writing
05.01.2022 I am trying to name these students and test my memory. I think I remember most of them but not sure. Back Row: Tony Savic, Neal Read, Russell Braund, Peter Farrell, Kathy McDonald, Janice Blyton, Glynis Kenzler, Elizabeth Hotz, Danny McNaught, Robert McIntyre, Gavin Flanders Second Row: ?????,??????, Virginia Wakelin, Bruce Sellers, David Sharpe,?????, Keith Lavaring, ??????, Kelvin Jensen, ?????, Dell Jones, Cathy Morrison Third Row: Heather Scholar, Ann Welle...r, Karen Wall, Dianne McCarthy, Helen Saunders, Rosanne Neller, Michelle Bettiens, Valda Barrett, ??????, Jennifer Stronach, Jennifer Schafer, Lynne Powell, Heather Bust So how did I go?????? Hmmmm probably not so good hey. I am enjoying all these school photos as there are those who did not change from year to year and then there were a few new starters and some left the district from year to year especially when some schools closed down. This was the year we were still being taught pounds, shillings and pence but that was about to change. Yes no shoes, except Karen and Valda in the first row. We all had pretty dresses on and combed hair with pretty ribbons. How cute are we.
04.01.2022 So one of the first settlers to my Ferry Hills in 1882 was William John Chapman. His father was John Chapman and his mother was Fanny Hall and they arrived from London when John was aged 20yrs and Fanny was aged 22yrs. According to the records they married on 21st May 1855 at St Phillips church in Sydney. Their first born was at Bathurst in 1856: following : 1. Joshua James Chapman 1856 - Bathurst 2. Emily Mary Chapman 1858 - Gayndah 3. Alfred Chapman 1860 - Gayndah 4.... Maria Louisa Chapman 1862 - Gayndah died the same year 5. William John Chapman 1863 - Gayndah 6. Jane Elizabeth Chapman 1865 - Reeds Ck or Reids Ck Gayndah 7. Mercy Fanny Chapman 1867 - Reeds Ck or Reids Ck Gayndah 8. Albert Edward Chapman 1870 - Ravenswoid 9. Cecilia (or Celia) Alice Chapman 1872 - Gayndah . It was No 5 William John Chapman who settled at Ferry Hills in 1882 and he married Amelia Thiele, Charles Frederick Thiele's sister on 18 Dec 1886. They had the following : 1 William Charles Chapman 1886 - Currajong Ck Dalysford Kolan 2 Charlotte Fanny Chapman 1888 - 3 Amelia Jane Chapman 1891 - Currajong Ck Wallaville 4 Albert (John) Arthur Chapman 1893 - Currajong Ck Wallaville - killed WW1 in France 5 Jessie Chapman 1896 - 6 James George Chapman 1899 - 7 Minnie Violet Chapman 1902 - 1921 died aged 19 yrs
03.01.2022 Welcome to Ferry Hills my home community where I grew up. This book came about out of an interest of my family history and when did they settle at Ferry Hills. Where is this place? Who named it and why Ferry Hills? So I have researched this topic and I have found my ' Ferry Hills'. Please post to relatives who can add their stories to this book.
02.01.2022 There are two families that were original settlers of My Ferry Hills which are eluding me at the moment dispite hours and hours of research and discussions. So it is perfectly understandable that complete strangers would settle there as well as people who may already know some of those early residents. So both my residents came early in 1883 - one in January and one in June. They could have come earlier but that was when they signed up for the blocks. 1. Michael Honan - Jan...uary 1883 - Nothing much on him at all really. I have a Michael and Patrick (his brother) on 29 July 1869 - sign up for Conditional Lease Land in NSW. In 1883 - Michael signed up for Deed of Grant for Conditional purchase at Portion 1147 - 205acs, which in that same year he signed over to Patrick Fleming and eventually would be split up into property for Ray Tobin and Henry Gayton. I have a census result from Brisbane 1896 where Michael and maybe his brother John are living and John is a selector. So maybe some early insider trading happening early settler style 2. Daniel Quigley - Jun 1883 - he selected Portion 1190 as lease Land with a Deed of Grant for Conditional Purchase. He stayed and obviously worked the land for 12yrs before John Tobin took over in 1895 then when he passed away Martin Tobin (Mick) took ownership. So Daniel is a mystery also. I have found some mixed information about what could be him but some dates are not lining up. So I cannot find him with any certainty except for a death notice from Brisbane 6 Aug 1911. It mentions that he is the second son of Peter and Mary Anne Quigley nee Donovan of Westbury Tasmania. So I found a Peter and Mary Anne at Westbury Tasmania with several children. There is a second son named Daniel Albert Quigley however he was born in 1870 which makes him 13 yrs old in 1883 when this portion was settled be Daniel Quigley. So if I keep going: by the time John Tobin took over in1895 our Daniel would have been 25 yrs old if born in 1870. So after he sold the property I can find him back in Tasmania and he marries Mary Ann Sullivan in 1904 aged 27yrs in Launceston Tasmania and moved sometime back to Brisbane where he passes away. There are no children. Lots of death of brothers and sisters and his father Peter passes in1900 and his mother in 1901. So a good story but full of holes. Can you help me with either of my mystery men. Contact me by message or mobile 0432329902
