23.01.2022 The Old Vaqueros Used To Say: The closer you became to God, the better Horseman you would become... And the better Horseman you became, the closer you would get to God.
23.01.2022 WHEN DOES THE EDUCATION START: My horse was started, then turned out for the last 4 months and is now ready to start his education I find there is a common misconception in the horse world that somehow starting and educating are two different things.... And yes, education is continued throughout the horses’ life, but what is starting? and when does the educating start? Each year I receive horses for starting and educating that come through our gates, I often get asked what I enjoy most. Every time it’s always the ones I have had the opportunity to start, that In turn I have the opportunity to educate. I believe starting is done within the first ride, this is the start and every ride after that, I’m educating. I receive horses each year that have been started elsewhere and come here to be educated, that are behind in areas horses that are correctly started have a confident understanding of. Sometimes there is such a rush to begin the education that things that should be solid are completely missed. Take the time to start their education - it is for life.
22.01.2022 "Once I get the horse where he’s responding and working for ya and has a good frame of mind and a good attitude, it’s not just the horse that needs fixing. It’s the human that needs fixing and it’s the human that created that in the first place." - Buck Brannaman
21.01.2022 "We don't expect the child to write his name the first day or two in school. As soon as he learns to sit down in class and listen to the teacher, he is not imme...diately expected to write his name.....but we expect immediate learning from a horse. We expect the horse to go from kindergarten to the eighth grade, to high school, to college without enough time, preparation, or consideration for his thoughts and feelings. We often don't even get him into a learning frame-of-mind before we begin to train him. We don't even have him relaxed and confident, where he can sit down in class and just listen. We skip all that preparation because we are so superior, or neglectful, or lazy. Because we haven't prepared ourselves to recognize the horse's feelings." - Ray Hunt Photo of Ray by Eclectic Horseman Magazine.
19.01.2022 WE WILL NEVER KNOW WHY THEY LET US RIDE THEM: Such a privilege the human takes for granted, asking another being to go against their natural instinct and way of life. Could you do so? To allow with grace, the use of raw hides, to be strapped on their back and then carry it with confidence into a area of unknown. Could you do so? ... Allowing another to guide your feet and in return, completely submitting to their ideas. Could you do so? To ride is a privilege not a right, we will never know why they let us ride them. We can only be grateful they do...

08.01.2022 JUST A COLT STARTER? Arguably, it’s the most important period of a horses’ educational life... Where fear is installed, or a partnership is formed. Where resistance is set in or an understanding of a soft feel is established. ... Where holes are left gaping or a foundation is built sound. Where the foundation is either going to leave you with a wealth of complications, or one that has thorough consideration for the best outcome for the horse and its owner. Where time, understanding, patience and a lot of commitment is put into the horse to produce one that would be welcome in any household. This takes time, and if you take that time, you will set them up for a lifetime. Don’t underestimate the value of a good start, you only get the opportunity once.
