25.01.2022 Little dragons hard at work on a chilly Saturday morning.

25.01.2022 Tristan demonstrating the front kick on the bag. Note the shift of the body weight forward whilst still maintaining structure and the right arm coming along with the kick. The power generation from the floor, through the legs, and ensuring the foot is tucked in both at the start and the end of the kick by driving back the heel, are critical success factors to a solid front kick. The impact to the bag is not a push, but rather, a break. Oh, and dont forget to keep the t...oes out of the way To get to this, Sensei broke the training down into 8 sections. Yes 8. And that included walking around the dojo on our imaginary silettos - gosh was that a sight to behold.

24.01.2022 Some great form from the karate kids last night.

24.01.2022 Congratulations Nika!

24.01.2022 An action packed karate kids session on Saturday, focusing on kata refinement ahead of the upcoming grading - our first since shutdown

24.01.2022 Congratulations Archie, and the Johnson brothers, Harley and Cooper, keeping up with Dad Roy. Check out that grin

24.01.2022 Getting strangled is a scary experience indeed. But a necessary part of learning self defense. When you are attacked, you automatically default to using your upper body strength to stifle the attack and try to loosen the stranglehold on your neck as your brain shifts to protecting your airways. However by using the foundations of karate training, by dropping your body weight and using the power from the ground up along with your structure to throw your attack off their centre, allowing you a chance to escape and retaliate.

24.01.2022 Congratulations to Sensei Shane Ker on his promotion to 4th Degree Black Belt (Yondan) and to Senpai Christine Garberg on her promotion to 1st Degree (Shodan). Yondan is a very significant rank and Shane’s promotion reflects a life long dedication to Karate Do, and is an indication of the depth at the Tasseikan Dojo. He has also attained to his father’s rank Sensei William (Bill) Ker, who was my first teacher in Chito-Ryu in the 1980s. For all who know Sensei Bill, he is wel...l into his 80s and still training, a fine example of the art he loves. Well done Shane and Christine, I know you both put in a tremendous effort especially in the lead up to the grading. Dojo members and I are very proud of you both. Michael J Noonan Kiyoshi

23.01.2022 The first grading post lockdown after 4 months away held last week

23.01.2022 Waking up Saturday mornings with a 300 punch warm up and kiai with Senpai Stephen Grubmier

23.01.2022 With hard work comes the rewards. Some of these karate kids have unsuccessfully graded previously and have come back to try again. This time with success. Congratulations on your successful grading - Aaden, Oisin, Anson, Maddie, Emily, Melanie and Kate. Great to see the progression of the kk’s and a shout out to Kate who has attained 5th kyu (purple WS), joining her brother Jack. Watch out world! Karate kids coming through!!

23.01.2022 After a couple of years and a whole foot taller, welcome back Jonah!

22.01.2022 Senior training Sat 10/10/20

22.01.2022 Tactical strikes week. This was the easier part of the training . A belt wrapped around a bo to practice your uraken strikes, with your knuckles being the point of impact. All other strikes done sans belt. Oh this was after a good old fashion set of knuckle - fingertips-back of hand transition pushups. Followed by mitt work. The best part of the lesson? Applying the techniques to the kata.

21.01.2022 Great to see the dads stepping up and training, inspired by seeing their kids train and thrive at the dojo. All from different training backgrounds and finding a common ground here at Tasseikan. What started as spending some time with their kids at the weekly family class has formed great friendships amongst them. Here are some of the dads - Justin, Vincent, Kon, Tony, Kiko and Mark here waiting for class to start - the next generation of kumite fighters perhaps?

21.01.2022 How the world has changed. A year ago today. The last official NSW tournament hosted by Chito Ryu Karate Blue Mountains. Who else misses the competition?

20.01.2022 Nothing like a good stretch on a chilly Saturday morning after a cruisy set of 40 burpees.

20.01.2022 Wednesday evenings session was an intense HIIT session led by Sensei Shane Ker. Pushups, sprints, katas, sit-ups, kumite drills, planks and commandos amongst others. This footage was only the last 10 mins of the class after 45mins at the same intensity. The kids were spent but pushed through with their huge grins on their faces. Well done to the adults Justin, Harrison and Roy for keeping up And a great throwback with the Sensei says game too!

20.01.2022 A rare treat. Instead of a water break between drills, tales from Sensei about Soke and Osensei. Story telling that is not documented which otherwise would be lost.

19.01.2022 Knowledge base: Kyoshi Noonan explaining the various tactical strikes and their application.

19.01.2022 The girls Frankie, Gia, Julia and Mya leading the way tonight with learning how to land a Jodan mawashi-geri kick. Great work for Week 1, learning about feet and hip placement and learning how to pull back effectively. And no, no photoshopping here (though it looks like some legs have been cut and pasted haha)

18.01.2022 More gyakuzuki work tonight at kumite. This week the drills taught distance. How to gauge distance. When to strike. Getting better each week.

17.01.2022 School holiday training schedule Monday 6 Jul to Saturday 18 Jul. For those of us still in town over the break and are keen to continue training. Next grading in a month!

16.01.2022 Jodan mawashu geri training week 1. Looking forward to seeing their progression!

15.01.2022 Roundhouse kicks

15.01.2022 More photos to come later. But an impressive one for now. The Ryland brothers, Alexander and Benjamin, were the last men standing , going nose to nose for a (low) plank off.

14.01.2022 This time last year... it was day one of the 2019 Soke Cup. A shoutout to the junior squad which ranged from a freshly minted 10yo to 17. They wont appreciate it now but the months of hard work and training that went into tournament prep to even get to this point including a 6 day training schedule and 6am Sunday starts (in winter) squeezed in with school commitments ... . Then literally flying halfway across the world to complete. Looking back now makes it even more mind blowing. This priceless experience is certainly one for the books. They sure didnt mind - they did this with their mates! And on a side note, happy birthday Frankie!

14.01.2022 Karate Kids cardio fun. The last week before school holidays meant some cardio fun for the karate kids. Pushups (knuckle of course!), sit-ups, plank offs, squat kicks and not to forget burpees. Each set consisted of a pyramid style workout: each team ran to the centre of the floor, goes down for one push-up/situp/burpee etc, run to the starting point, and back to the Centre, 2 push-up/situp/burpees, then this continues to 10. Here is a snippet of the session.

14.01.2022 The top 4 of the burpee challenge were all girls who then took it to a whole new level in the final round. Look at that lightning fast speed! Well done to Kate, Maddy and the Coric sisters, Emily & Melanie. Go girls!

13.01.2022 Learning how to do a proper back will yield tremendous power when done with the correct technique. So many little tweaks to perfect it. Balancing your centre, aiming your glutes towards your target and a small glance before launching the power kick before resuming launch position. The moment? When you realize the power, as with all others, drives from the ground up. Karate kids giving it a good go, with Kate leading the pack on Saturday.

13.01.2022 On behalf of the 2019 Soke Cup squad, the senior training class presented Kyoshi Michael Noonan with a curated photo book of the memorable Penticton event on the one year anniversary. Priceless memories with beautiful people.

12.01.2022 A massive turnout for grading today. Tremendous spirit shown by the challengers. Like Sensei says, you need to train hard and prepare for your grading. And sometimes that isn’t enough. For today. You may not be there yet but an unsuccessful grading will push you to do better and equipped with tips and pointers, you will come back and try again at the next one. As some of the graders today have shown, they have gone away and thought about what they had needed to work on. They have put effort in which is clear from their technique improvement and have come back today to challenge for the new belt. Successfully. As Sensei always say, you may not be able to do this. Yet. But if you persevere and work hard, you will.

12.01.2022 First bogu wear after 6 long months. Thanks Mark for the photos!

12.01.2022 Karate kids learning how to do a knuckle push up. Refining this seemingly impossible task at the start for the white belts is a bit of a how-on-earth-and-ouch! But looking at the more senior belts gave them some hope and encouragement (Ps it doesn’t really stop hurting but you learn to work with that and push through). That it is achievable if you work hard and just push through that mental barrier. Good stead for living life! Kids that were challenging for grading later that same day were led through an intensive grading prep by Senpais Steve, Ray and Mya.

11.01.2022 Congrats to more successful graders - Dom, Anthony and Sammi!!

11.01.2022 Amazing tenacity and spirit from the Saturday Karate Kids Sensei finished the class with squat kicks and at the 30 and 40 mark, there were opt out options for the second and third rows if they were feeling fatigued. Not one person stopped. Everyone pushed way past their comfort zone and kept going. 63 squat kicks accomplished after a grueling leg session. A great example of mind over matter. Well done kids!

11.01.2022 Well done Jordan, Luca and Charlie!

10.01.2022 Just a reminder that we are back to the regular term timetable tomorrow. Note that Wed evenings remain Teens & Adults, not kumite, at this stage.

08.01.2022 Grading - September 2020

07.01.2022 Soke Cup squad after the medal ceremony

07.01.2022 Marcus was the standout today with the box jumps. Fancy jumping up to 2/3 of your height!

07.01.2022 Full house tonight with Senpai Ray

06.01.2022 Congratulations to the successful graders Mark & Kico, Joshua, Alexander & Zachary. One more step in your karate journey.

05.01.2022 The brown belts demonstrated the ukes (blocks) that was the focus of the Saturday class

05.01.2022 Senior training October 2020. Also bon voyage to Will and best wishes for his move to Japan. Dojo reopens for term 4 on Monday 12/10/20. See you then!

05.01.2022 The family that trains together, grades together! A belated Congratulations to the Verlinde family for their achievement!

04.01.2022 SCHOOL HOLIDAY DOJO CLOSURE The Dojo will be closed for Term 3 break from Monday 28th September to Saturday 10th October. First classes back on Monday 12th October. ... Enjoy the break and stay safe.

04.01.2022 Karate kids learning the front kick, step by step.

04.01.2022 This time last year... feels like a different world. The Australian team gathered for a training session in beautiful Penticton, Canada in final preparations for Soke Cup. Such a priceless moment and very grateful to have been a part of it. ... If you are keen for Soke Cup 2022 in Kumamoto, Japan, step up your training now Standby for more throwback photos over the coming days.

04.01.2022 Karate kids worked on strengthening their legs today to better their kumite skills. Part of the training was box jumps. Shoutout to the top 4 - Marcus, Luciano, Jack and Jasper!

01.01.2022 Another senior belt awarded! Matthias has been training at the dojo since his Little Dragon days. A quiet achiever with his new purple belt. Congratulations!

01.01.2022 This best sums up the spirit and the discipline of the karate kids at the dojo. Knuckle planks are hard at the best of times, and more so after a hard day at school. The kids that were lined up on the mat went automatically to the wooden floor when it’s time for knuckle plank holds today without being asked by Sensei to do so. Years of training at Tasseikan means that they know what is expected of them during training and opting the easy way out is not an option. Well done Emily, Melanie, Frankie, Connor, Harley, & Louis
