21.01.2022 RUGBY LEAGUE FANS: Former Cooktown boy Darryn Schonig has reported to the Indy that he is OK, fit and rearing to go for the Melbourne Storm against the Manly Sea Eagles this afternoon. He will be wearing jersey #17 and will be coming off the bench in the game, which starts at 4.05pm.

Anyone with an interest or concerns about this project is welcome to attend.

20.01.2022 Cooktown's annual race meeting will go ahead this year. A majority vote of members who attended yesterday's meeting held at the race course ensured the town's premier social event will go ahead. Traditionally, the meeting is usually held on the second Saturday meeting in November, which, this year will be November 7. However, this is yet to be confirmed. More in next Wednesday's, July 15 edition.

16.01.2022 BREASTING THE BAR is no longer an option for Queensland’s licensed venue patrons, with the State Government introducing a new rule in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Patrons will still be able to consume food and drinks provided they remain seated. According to a social media post by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, it’s an important step in helping people maintain appropriate social distancing. The same number of people are allowed into venues, and you can still order food and drinks from the bar.

13.01.2022 RUGBY LEAGUE FANS: Former Cooktown lad Darryn Schonig will be playing off the bench again today for the Melbourne Storm in their match against the Cowboys. Darryn will be wearing #15 in the game to be played at Sunshine Coast Stadium and will televised live on FoxSports from 4.05pm.

12.01.2022 ATTENTION RUGBY LEAGUE FANS: Former Cooktown lad, Darryn Schonig, will have one last chance to impress Melbourne Storm coach, Craig Bellamy, when he plays off the bench today against the Dragons at Central Coast Stadium. Bellamy is resting 11 of his regulars in this, the last match of the regular season, which will give Schonig and other fringe players their oppostunities. Schonig recently signed a one-year extension with the Melbourne-based club on the back of earlier appearances. That alone is testimony to the faith Bellamy already has in the big front rower, which gives considerable weight to Schonig's ability give the master coach's eye for recognising and developing the potential of players. The game will be shown on FoxSports from 4.05pm this afternoon.

The ECQ is expanding the number and hours of operation of early voting centres across Queensland for the 2020 State general election. In Cooktown, voters can cast their votes at the PCYC Cooktown Events Centre. There will be approximately 200 early voting centres at locations across Queensland. Locals wanting to attend this year’s race meeting and who haven’t already registered their details, must do so before the day. ... COVID-19 restrictions demand the Cooktown Amateur Turf Club has a record of everyone in attendance in the event contact tracing is required. It’s as simple as that! Last week’s Indy reported that with restrictions on the number of people attending outdoor functions being relaxed, The CATC can now have 700 patrons in attendance (up from the original 300) and 100 trainers, jockeys, police, paramedics and various workers at the November 7 event. But as at noon yesterday, less than 400 had registered - bugger all locals. The process is simple - request a membership application from the club’s Facebook page. 06.01.2022 The Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Craig Crawford confirmed he had written to the Federal Government requesting the removal of all Queensland designated areas from the Biosecurity determination from 12 June 2020. Minister Crawford said the Biosecurity Determination will be replaced with a state-based Chief Health Officer direction, to ensure communities are not at risk. "This will provide a more flexible way to manage restrictions," he said. "...Each community will have an independent plan prepared but will take in to account what is required for that community. "The Chief Health Officer will make this direction based on health advice and following consultation with remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities." 03.01.2022 BREAKING: Police have advised that a 38-year-old Cooktown man has died following a single vehicle crash yesterday evening (September 2). Early investigations suggest the man was travelling in his vehicle when he lost control of the car while travelling south on Endeavour Valley Road. The car rolled and the man, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene. Investigations by the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing.

02.01.2022 Readers are reminded that tomorrow, Wednesday, November 11 is Remembrance Day. Once referred to as Armistice Day, it is another solemn occasion in Australia’s ANZAC history. The Cooktown RSL Sub-Branch will hold its commemoration service in ANZAC Park, Charlotte Street. Those wanting to attend are advised the service will start at 10.45am in order for the Last Post to played on the 11th hour of the 11th month.
