14.01.2022 Congratulations to Geoff Monteith on getting this great recognition. We are very proud that he is one of our members. Many of us have benefitted from the knowledge Geoff has shared so willingly on excursions and camps. https://blog.qm.qld.gov.au//museum-honorary-in-top-10-com/

12.01.2022 Helen Schwencke and Dick Copeman, members of our club, will soon release their book "Inviting Nature to Dinner". With their combined knowledge of and interest in invertebrates and plants this should be a fascinating book. For more information refer to their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/invitingnaturetodinner/permalink/342338340154760/

05.01.2022 We are looking for photos for the 2021 QNC Calendar. Photos need to have been taken on QNC outings - because we have had very few outings this year, we encourage you to look through photos from previous years. Submit up to 4 of your best photos to [email protected] before 5pm on Friday 18 September 2020. So far only two (2) photos have been received, and we need many more than this for consideration for the 2021 Calendar. The September General Meeting is Members Night. During this meeting photos will be selected by members for the 2021 QNC Calendar. Requirements for the photos can be found on the QNC webpage https://www.qnc.org.au/photo_comp.html

04.01.2022 On 19 August we will visit Cotterill Avenue and Protea Drive, Bongarre. Allan will lead the outing to a part of Bribie Island National Park which is a mosaic of eucalypt, tea-tree and banksia forest, paperbark wetland and wallum heath once classified as Lot 402 Back in September 1998 Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association won a court case to save this 37.31 ha block from development. The achievement resulted from a mammoth volunteer effort involving about a dozen ...people supported by another 90 or so. Lot 402 was saved from urbanisation, and a few years later it was transferred into Bribie Island National Park. It contains four Regional Ecosystems * Regional Ecosystem 12.2.5 Open-forest to low closed forest on coastal dunes, beaches and old beach ridges * Regional Ecosystem 12.2.7 Melaleuca quinquenervia open-forest on sand plains * Regional Ecosystem 12.2.9 (Wallum) Banksia aemula low open-woodland on dunes and sand plains. Usually deeply leached soils * Regional Ecosystem 12.2.12 Closed-heath on seasonally waterlogged sand plains Registration details are in QNC News 351a Some of the flowers seen on a previous outing are shown here https://www.qnc.org.au/Bribie_Is_NP(Lot_402).pdf See more

01.01.2022 The June 2020 issue of The Queensland Naturalist has been published and sent to all current members. It contains some very interesting articles: the Queensland Natural History Award to Dr Andrew Baker of QUT, Presidential Address on the natural history of East Diamond Island in the Coral Sea; a description of drinking in Coastal Taipan; and the Richmond Birdwing butterfly successfully breeding on North Stradbroke Island, well out of its normal range.

01.01.2022 David and Ann Hanger were presented with Life Membership of the QNC at the September 2020 general meeting. Both David and Ann have made a very significant contribution to the club. They have both served on the council for many years, being both Vice-President and President. Between them, they have served as Excursion Secretary in 2000, 2005 and 2006; organising the many outings of the club. In addition to these formal roles, they have made great contributions to the club's activities and have always been willing to share their knowledge and friendship with other members.
