25.01.2022 The Stationary nurse has finally arrived. The website is up and running (JETA Publishing) and the book has been placed at Matilda bookshop, Stirling STH Australia. Look out for more bookshops in the next few weeks, or buy online. Check out jetapublishing.net for other web locations for The stationary nurse...

24.01.2022 Two weeks in and I'm already saying goodbye to some crew. There are a few who come for two weeks , especially the American staff who average just two weeks vacation a year except for public holiday This sows the level of sacrifice some people are willing to make as working on the ship isn't exactly taking a vacation. My day starts at 0630hrs when I'm up and showering (Regulation two minutes because of water restrictions), not as hard for a South Aussie who lives in the driest state on the driest continent in the world. 20.01.2022 I had the privilege, the other day to assist with the second, not the first, cataract operation for this field service in Guinea with Mercy Ships 2018. During this time spent in Guinea, there are about 1000+ patients expected to recieve sight retoring procedures. It it a quick simple and cheap surgery called 'MSICS', ( Manual small incision cataract surgery) and probably costs less than $10 per patient. 19.01.2022 This week has been smooth sailing as a far as the surgeries are concerned. It is nice to not have any 'Take a deep breath' moments for once. This weeks team seemed to gel and everything was tickety boo. So much so I have been able to plan my next culinary adventure- ANZAC biscuits. I have sourced Golden syryp from the Supermarche Imperial, so I am good to go. 14.01.2022 Children. They have a way of bending nay completely destroying the rules. They completely ignore the no admittance signs and physically capture you by holding your hand when you are attempting to project calm and assurance to an adult patient going to surgery. This in itself seems to do more as far as reassuring my adult patients than my words being translated ino French, Susu or Fullah. 14.01.2022 No matter how much satisfaction and positivness I get helping to give people their lives back with the surgeries we perform, there is an equal and opposite set of negative events that can happen. Not that I am particularly worried but we have witneesed a series of demonstations and political unrest in Conakry over the last week. No one is particularly sure of the root cause; people with greavances, people who want justice, people who are mere opportunists in a whirlpool of unrest. 11.01.2022 Otherwise known as 'I'm singing in the rain'. Sunday has come for the third time if you count the one I don't remember due to jet lag. I am with a group attending a church called Des Assemblies de Dieu de Coneasseur. This is advertised as a French speaking church with English translation. I do concede that there appeared to be English words involved but there is a secret. [ 219 more words ] https://rossmcmercyship.blog/sunday-time-and-the-livings-e/

11.01.2022 There are many feel good stories that come out of the Mercy Ships free surgery program. Sometimes, no matter how much we would like a happy ending, there are occasions when things don't go to script. We have had a surgery that became more complex as the scheduled time went on. The surgical time ended up being eighteen or so hours. [ 236 more words ] https://rossmcmercyship.blog/batteries-not-always-included/

11.01.2022 This is the cover for book 2 "Adventures of a slightly warped man in Greece"

11.01.2022 Gumby, that flexable rubbery person from the the TV show of the same name has lessons for Mercy Ships., particularly the operating room. Flexability is the name of the game. Work loads and operations change at a moments notice due to human nature, technical problems and what is known as the Swiss cheese effect. Take the other day for instance. I was inhaling my usual bowl of porridge when the lights went out all over the world. [ 351 more words ] https://rossmcmercyship.blog/paint-me-green-and-call-me-gu/

08.01.2022 I spent last weekend on one of the Îles de Los, the one called Kasa. A 30-minute boat ride off Conakry, the Îles de Los are a small huddle of palm-fringed islands that tempt with tropical beach dreams. I had planned the week- end with the local travel guru, Vitally, a crew member with connections. You have to remember that planned and implementation are two vastly different animals. 07.01.2022 Well, today I finished the first draft of my second book 'The travelling nurse, - Greece' This one only took two years to write so I am getting quicker. Now all I have to do is edit it one or ten times and it will be ready for publishing. Hoping for a May/June date to launch. Watch this space...

07.01.2022 After some years of pulling hairs (or rabbits) out, the first book in the "slightly warped man" series has hit the market. The book, "The stationary nurse" is currently available online at Amazon. com as a downloadable book at the Kindle store or at this time, directly from the author for $19.95 (plus postage)

04.01.2022 After the challenges of last week, I have decided to bake a good old traditional Aussie bananna cake as a balm for the soul. This recipe has gone viral over the last thirty or fourty years, is known as 'Laureen's' cake. Laureen probably recieved it from her mother etc and I'm fairly certain was passed down from Captain Cook when he proclaimed Australia as a part of the British Empire.
