25.01.2022 Bloody Covid is driving us mad! alas no joy for the bush dance just yet, but we won't give up, here is a little something to lift your spirits! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blkCq0i83cU

24.01.2022 Its been 8 long months, and still no chance for us to re-instate the Downside dance- yet remaining positive is all we have. I found this really great song I wanted to share with you all - not quite our usual style, but appropriate all the same.....no matter what happens...keep on dancing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmBSGlXqC4Q

24.01.2022 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h984QFBaB6I Don't forget This Saturday Night is our FREE night of bush dance and entertainment at the Downside Hall. Though the weather may be hot, we will have plenty of cool water and cordial, tea and coffee and maybe even some icy poles in the freezer! If you prefer any other beverage well bring that along! This is to support anyone affected by fire, drought, or anyone suffering hardship, their friends and families, including those in the RF...S, medics, charitable organisations and well basically everyone! Our sincere thanks to the Downside Hall Committee for waiver of fees for the dance. Spread the word. Its our way to give back to the community and area as a whole. bring a smile and cool comfortable clothing, (yes your favourite jackie howe or beach wear will be appropriate) and the ceiling fans will be working overtime! 8pm start! Bring it on! See more

20.01.2022 To all those who have supported the Downside Bushdance and the Tin Shed Rattlers in 2019- A huge thank you! We will be back in 2020 on the 1st February with more fun. We wish everyone a truly wonderful Christmas and New Year. Please stay safe, and keep on smiling! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dtaDJWSCxc&t=25s

19.01.2022 Friends, it is with great sadness and disappointment that we must POSTPONE the Downside Bushdance until further notice. This is in response to the Corona virus outbreak and the Government requirement to enforce social distancing and the ban on indoor crowds over 100 people. Your health and safety is far more important to us. We will be back when safe to do so. Please watch this space for updates. Stay safe!

19.01.2022 This is too good not to share! thank you Susan for sharing. A legacy left for her father...and for all fathers ODE TO THE HAT A hat is a must, when you're trudgin' through dust, With the summer sun blazing on high, And, fany or plain, its a shelter from rain,... When storm clouds erupt from the sky. It will fan your face cool, and a bull you might fool, If you toss it away as you go, It will too, of course, hold a drink for your horse, Or whake your old dog, when his slow. As a fan for the fire, it sends the flames higher, Keeps smoke from your eyes and your nose. If you throw it, ' tis said, to conceal a snake's head, He'll stay where he is, comatosed. Also on reflecting, I've been egg collecting, and used that old Hartford a dish, picking mushrooms and fruit, well, it really is beaut, Why, its even been known to hold fish! Its a shade for the eyes and a swat for the flies, I've had one through good times and bad, And cold, wet or hot, thirsty, smoky or not, you can jump on it when you are Mad! Quite oft, in the past, when life wasn't so fast, It was raised when a lady was nigh, And, I still recollect, as a sign of respect, It was doffed when a funeral went by. When I am all done with my place in the sun, And its some other bloke's turn to bat, There's one thing I ask of whoever has the task; Make sure that I don't leave my hat! See more

02.01.2022 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knTYjI66Yzw A really good watch, and in reflection just one of the ways our heritage and folk law began

01.01.2022 On the 50th Anniversary of the Quinty folk festival it is fitting to recall its start- the following is an unaltered account by Noel Raynes as supplied to me by... Noel. I know he would have wanted this posted for the record... WAGGA FOLK FESTIVAL ORIGINS. IT WAS EARLY IN 1969 THAT I ARRIVED IN WAGGA AFTER HAVING A BIT TO DO WITH THE TRADITIONAL FOLK MUSIC SCENE IN SYDNEY. SOMEHOW OR RATHER, A GROUP OF PEOPLE ATTRACTED EACH OTHER (POSSIBLY AS PART OF THE FOLK PROCESS) AND SESSIONS SEEMED TO JUST HAPPEN. SOME NAMES THAT SPRING TO MIND ARE MARY GOW, MARGARET GISSING, LEITH RYAN, DENIS O’CONNOR,PETER CAMPBELL, NOEL ELLIOT, WILL O’NEIL,JEFF BROWN AND I’M FAIRLY SURE DAN MORGAN USED TO SING THE ODD SONG . AT THAT TIME, WE MOVED FROM VARIOUS VENUES IN WAGGA, INCLUDING A COFFEE BAR IN THE AUSTRALIAN ARCADE; A SMALL CELLAR IN THE TOURIST HOTEL AND A GRAND OLD RAMBLING SORT OF A HOTELWHERE THE A.B.C. NOW STANDS, CALLED THE PASTORAL HOTEL. DURING THIS TIME WE SCRAPED TOGETHER A FEW QUID AND ACTUALLY FLEW SINGERS DOWN FROM SYDNEY TO PERFORM WITH THE LOCALS AT A CONCERT IN THE CIVIC THEATRE. MIKE EVES, DECLAN AFFLEY, MARIAN HENDERSON COLIN DRYDEN AND JOHN FRANCIS THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS A BIT ALLRIGHT ALTHOUGH WHEN WE PICKED THEM UP AT THE AIRPORT AND THEN SORT OF CONNED THEM INTO SITTING AND SINGING ON THE BACK OF A MODEL T FORD TRUCK AS PART OF A LOCAL STREET PARADE TO PROMOTE THE CONCERT, I’M NOT SURE THAT THEY WERE SUPER IMPRESSED. THE CONCERTS THAT WE PUT ON WERE ALL FAIRLY SUCCESSFUL AND SO A FOLK FESTIVAL SEEMED TO BE A NATURAL PROGRESSION. THE EARLY FESTIVALS, IN MY MIND, ARE ACTUALLY A LITTLE BLURRED SEQUENCIALLY AND SO PLEASE FORGIVE ANY NARRATIVE OVERLAP CONCERNING THE FIRST COUPLE OF FESTIVALS. WORKSHOPS FOR THE FIRST FESTIVAL WERE HELD AT THE AFOREMENTIONED PASTORAL HOTEL WHERE THE PUBLICANSPHIL AND RUTH JACKSON WERE EXPATRIOT POMS WHO LOVED THE ATMOSPHERE THAT WAS CREATED AND WAS HIGHLY REMINISCENT OF THE OLD STYLE FOLK-PUBS IN ENGLAND. INCIDENTALLY, FOR THOSE RUGBY LEAGUE BUFFS WHO MIGHT READ THIS, PHIL JACKSON WAS A GENIAL GIANT WHO CAPTAINED THE TOURING BRITISH LIONS RUGBY LEAGUE TEAM PRIOR TO HIS SETTLING IN WAGGA WAGGA. THE LOCAL CONTRIBUTION FOR THIS PART OF THE FESTIVAL COMPRISED ONE OF OUR NUMBER CALLED JOHN REID, WHO SET UP A SINGLE STAND SHEARING RIG IN THE BACK SALOON BAR OF THE PUB AND TO THE STRAINS OF THE RYBUCK SHEARER AND CLICK GO THE SHEARS RENDERED BY THE LOCALS,SHORE A HALF A DOZEN FULL WOOL MARINOS MUCH TO THE DELIGHT OF THE VISITING FOLKIES FROM SYDNEY, MELBOURNE, CANBERRA AND WHEREVER, WHO WERE PACKED INTO THE PLACE. DURING ONE OF THESE SESSIONS IN THE BACK BAR,IT WAS PROBABLY A LITTLE BIT MISCHIEVOUS OF ME TO YELL OUT TO MICK FLANAGAN AND HIS IRISH MATES..HERE, GRAB A HOLD OF THIS MICK!!! AND CHUCKED A (DEAD) BROWN SNAKE ACROSS THE ROOM IN THEIR GENERAL DIRECTION. IN THE TERRIFIED PANIC THAT FOLLOWED, BIG DAVE ALEXANDER WENT DOWN WITH A WRENCHED ANKLE AND WAS LITERALLY TRAMPLED IN THE RUSH TO GET OUT. BUT HE DID SURVIVE AND THANKS TO A LOT OF SUPPORT AND HIS BOTTLE OF DRAMBUIE, WENT ON TO ENJOY THE REST OF THE FESTIVAL. ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE SNAPSHOTS FOR ME, WAS THE SIGHT OF DAVE De HUGARD AND MIKE O’ROURKE COMFORTABLY ENSCONCED IN A STABLE OUT THE BACK OF THE PUB, WITH A LARGE FLAGOON OF BOMBO TO SHARE, DISCUSSING THE MERITS AND DE-MERITS OF A PARTICULAR OLD SONG THAT DAVE HAD RECENTLY COME ACROSS. THE DANCE FOR THIS FESTIVAL WAS HELD AT THE NOW DEFUNCT GREGADOO HALL, WHICH WAS EAST OF WAGGA AND WAS SIMPLY A GRAND OLD BUSH HALL. THE MUSICIANS DON’T READILY COME TO MIND BUT I’M FAIRLY SURE JACKO KEVINS WAS IN THE THICK OF THINGS ALONG WITH CANBERRANSCOLIN McJANNITT, PETER HOBBO HOBSON AND MARK TANDY. IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT ONE OF THE FUNNIEST MEN I’VE EVER MET.MICK FOGARTYALSO FROM CANBERRA, WOULD HAVE BEEN THE MASTER OF CEREMONIES AND DANCE CALLER. THE FESTIVAL CONCERT WAS A FORMAL AFFAIR HELD IN THE CIVIC THEATRE ON THE SUNDAY NIGHT AND IT PRESENTED AROUND NINE PERFORMANCESFOUR IN THE FIRST HALF AND FIVE IN THE SECOND. EACH PERFORMANCE WAS RESTRICTED TO NO MORE THAN FOUR PIECES AND ALL WERE OF A VERY HIGH STANDARD. THE CONCERTS WERE USUALLY VERY WELL ATTENDED. ACCOMMADATION FOR VISITORS WAS VARIED E.G. STAYING WITH FRIENDS; THERE WERE ALSO SOME BEDS ORGANISED OUT AT THE NORTH CAMPUS OF THE TEACHERS COLLEGE..(NOW THE C.S.U.); AND A POPULAR VENUE WAS THE SCOUT HALL OUT AT OURA. AT THIS LAST NAMED A GREAT EFFORT ON THE PART OF THE LOCALS TO ENSURE COMFORT AND HOSPITALITY WAS MADE, TO THE EXTENT OF HUGE AMOUNTS OF MEAT BEING SUPPLIED TO A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO WERE TO SOME EXTENTVEGETARIAN. THERE IS ONE ACCOUNT OF A CAR CARRYING THE SAID MEAT BEING STRANDED DUE TO SEVERE FLOODS OCCURING AT THAT TIME AND SO A MEAT BURIAL DETAIL HAD TO BE ORGANISED..? AS IT IS TODAY, WAGGA WAS A GREAT CENTRAL LOCATION FOR PEOPLE TO GET TOGETHER .TO EXCHANGE MUSIC, SONGS, JOKES, SONGS, DANCES, LAUGHS..THE WHOLE BOX AND DICE. SORT OF WHERE SYDNEY MET MELBOURNE MET CANBERRA MUCH TO THE ENJOYMENT AND EDIFICATION OF THE LOCALS. FUNDING FOR THE WAGGA FESTIVAL WAS SUPPLIED IN THE FORM OF A THREE THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT FROM THE N.S.W. FOLK FEDERATION. THIS MONEY WAS RETURNED AFTER ALL INCOME AND EXPENDITURE WAS FINALISED. IF A SLIGHT LOSS WAS MADE THEN THE N.S.W. FEDERATION WAIVED THE DEBT. TO MY WAY OF THINKING, THAT’S THE WAY IT OUGHT TO BE. BUT THEN AGAIN, THAT WAS IN THE DAYS WHEN THE PERFORMERS SANG AND PLAYED FOR THE SHEER ENJOYMENT AND CAMARADERIE. ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES PERFORMERS WERE ASSISTED WITH TRAVELLING EXPENSES. AHHHH! THE GOOD OLD DAYS. WOULDN’T IT BE GREAT IF THE PORT JACKSON FOLK FESTIVAL WAS RE-INVENTED, FUNDED BY BOTH THE STATE AND NATIONAL BODIES AND HELD ANNUALLY IN TOWNS AROUND N.S.W. FROM WAGGA TO SYDNEY TO NEWCASTLE , DUBBO, LISMORE AND SO ON. IN THE SHORT TIME I’VE GOT TO THINK ABOUT THIS, THAT’S ABOUT ALL I CAN RECOLLECT OF THE FIRST FESTIVAL. THERE’S PROBABLY A HEAP OF PEOPLE FROM CANBERRA , WAGGA , GRIFFITH, SYDNEY AND MELBOURNE WHO MAY HAVE A MORE ACCURATE OR DETAILED MEMORY THAN ME.PLEASE..FEEL FREE TO ADD ON OR CORRECT. THE ONE THING THAT I’M CERTAIN OF IS THAT, THOSE EARLY FESTIVALS WERE AWESOMELY ENJOYABLE AT A TIME WHEN ENJOYMENT CAME NATURALLY AND WAS’NT TEMPERED WITH STRANGE NEW-MILLENIA VALUES. Noel Raynes (esq.)
