21.01.2022 EIGHTY TWO JOHN To celebrate his 80th birthday this octogenarian adventurer jumped out of an airplane! ... John grew up in Kalgoorlie and has lived and worked in many places across Australia. At twenty-eight he left his job in Darwin and headed to the Antarctic where he spent a year working as a weather watcher checking the large weather balloons and recording his findings. He had many adventures in the Antarctic - enough for a book on its own - including brewing beer, whiteouts, broken bones and working with the Huskies. The son of a Croatian immigrant, John is (or has been) a sailor, actor, cameraman, environmental activist, draftsman (who insisted that a no tie clause was added to his contract), husband and father, blogger and so much more. What a full and inspiring life he has led! No wonder so many people recommended John for inclusion in this project! https://www.instagram.com/the0to100project/

10.01.2022 EIGHTEEN SAMANTHA Humble, mature beyond her years, and really very funny, Samantha was honoured at the 2018 Australia Day Celebrations where she was announced as the winner of Young Citizen of the Year Award. Dressed in her band uniform she stood up and proudly received the recognition she deserves. ... Growing up in a family where active participation in the community is the norm, Samantha learned early that full participation (without seeking recognition) was the way to go. Despite this, Samantha has found herself honoured for her community work countless times. In July 2015, two weeks after receiving her bronze medallion, Samantha was at the beach collecting sand samples for her year 10 Science project when she heard cries for help. There was no one else on the beach and, almost without thinking, she went into action and rescued a mother and her son. Not long afterward, the very grateful woman phoned Samantha’s mum, Sue, and told her what had happened. Needless to say, Sue was startled, proud and quick to leave the office to get to home to her daughter and hear the whole story. Samantha’s dad passed away when she was very young. I think it is safe to say that he too would have been very proud of his youngest child not because of her public accolades but because of her kind and giving nature. Samantha has embraced the Parkinsong Choir and coaches and referees in both hockey and basketball. She loves to travel, is actively involved in sport, music and loves just hanging out with friends. Even before she has settled into her first year at university in Perth, Sam has found a way to connect and reach out to her new community by tutoring a student at a near-campus high school. This soon to be commerce student’s eyes sparkled with delight as she talked about driving up to meet him so that they could get to know each other and start working together as soon as school started.

04.01.2022 SIXTY SIX GUS So many words could be said about this quick-witted, kind, deep-thinking and remarkable man. Gus arrived in the South West 1983 and immediately began working towards making life better for those less fortunate than himself. It is here that he and his wife Jeni raised their family and gave their hearts and souls to the local community. ... In 2014, Gus became the first person in his family to attend university and complete a PhD. Gus is also the first ECU South West recipient of a PhD in Writing. He is interested in people and they are interested in him; Gus has friends of all ages and has been a vibrant part of the university community. His first novel, The Wounded Sinner, is due to be released by Magabala Books in the new year. What an achievement for the young lad who, all those years ago, refused to go to school! Despite all these wonderful things, life is very challenging and tenuous for Gus. Diagnosed six months ago with Cerebellar Degeneration the decline in Gus’s health has been remarkable. Sadly he has lost the ability to walk and to sit up unaided. He has lost his independence. Recently Gus became a resident of a local nursing home. He is being well cared for but is very aware of how short life is. Gus is not afraid to die, but he is also not keen to say goodbye to Jeni, his six children, or his seventeen grandchildren. So, for now, Gus is doing his darnedest to hang on to his dignity, maintain his fighting spirit and continue to write his poetry.

01.01.2022 NINTEY-SEVEN MARJ Sometimes we get lucky enough to meet someone really special: Marj is unassuming, gentle, strong, loving, kind, interested and interesting. At 97, her quick mind is still taking in everything that is happening around her and her big heart is still reaching out to all.... Marj spent the first three years of her life in Claremont before the family relocated to Manjimup and then settled in Boyanup. Life on a dairy farm was busy, hard and wonderful. She remembers the horse and carts, the Boyanup of old and the freedom of a childhood growing up with her best friend and sister, Dot. Chalk and cheese the sisters were life-long friends until sadly, Dot passed away a few years ago. Today Marj is the proud Mum of five, grandmother of 12 and great grandmother of 22 with a new one on the way. Her home is open to the children of all ages and she continues to host a weekly family lunch where multi-generations join her at her home. Lunch is followed by a lively quiz where the stakes are high the winner takes home a $5 scratchy. Marj has been creating beautiful pieces of art for a very long time and, although she has recently packed away her paintbrushes, one cannot help but wonder if the might come back out again soon #nintey-seven #thebookincubator #the0to100project #goldenoldies #kateheaslip_photography #Bunbury #southwestwa_allofme #seniors #aging #over90 #fabulousfamilies #Igrewupinboyanup

01.01.2022 THREE TRIPLETS ELLA, JACK and ARI Three sets of giggles, three sets of vaccinations, a three seater stroller, three sets of gumboots (Heaven forbid that someone put on the gumboots with the firetruck sticker on them when they actually belong to the other child), one, two or three crying babies at once, the struggle of one mum fitting a pram through a checkout aisle or finding a park that is fenced and gated - always need a spare pair of hands at public events. ... The joys (not) of buying three of everything just to keep the peace imagine what happened when the boys got lawnmowers and Ella got a wheelbarrow.. and imagine at the end of the day the calm when three sets of eyes close for the night. Life is certainly an adventure for these little ones, their younger sister (#zero) and their parents! https://www.instagram.com/the0to100project/
