23.01.2022 Great things happen when siblings read together! For older children, it can help to build confidence and critical literacy skills, and for the younger siblings theres a huge benefit to having a reading role model at home. Could there be a cuter sight?

The theme this year is 'We are the Elders of tomorrow, hear our voice, which honours the movement of traditional knowledge from Elders to the next generation through stories and cultural practice. Indigenous knowledge has a transformative power, crucial to fostering human development and social justice and we must hear the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children today, empowering them to fulfil their role as the influential Elders and leaders of tomorrow. #ChildrensDay2020 #EldersOfTomorrow #StrongInCulture

14.01.2022 Community is the key to what we do and how we work. If we support one teacher, one teachers aide, one mum, there are many, many children, year after year, that are going to be the beneficiary of that learning, that support and that mentoring.
13.01.2022 We know that literacy helps to develop confident, autonomous, creative and engaged children. That is why we are so driven to raise the literacy levels in Australias most marginalised communities. Will you join us? #literacyisfreedom

09.01.2022 Today marks International Literacy Day, and the theme for this year is Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. It is an important opportunity to reflect on the existing inequity in our education system, with ever-widening learning gaps between students of different backgrounds. This is particularly true of our very remote Indigenous communities, where year nine Indigenous students can be 7 to 8 years behind in writing. All evidence tells us that literacy is one of the most important indicators of future health, wellbeing and prosperity. Literacy is the pathway to accessing education, employment and enjoying a healthy and happy life. Please stand with us and donate now to make literacy a reality for all Australians: alnf.org/donate/

08.01.2022 We love Aussie books for Aussie kids. This afternoon we are reading the much-loved classic "Diary of a Wombat" by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley. "Morning: Slept. Afternoon: Slept. Evening: Ate"... Who else wishes they could be in wombat mode today?
08.01.2022 Last week, the National Agreement on Closing the Gap was announced, recognising the importance of strong and flourishing First Languages as a powerful tool in Closing the Gap. We are thrilled to see this recognition, signalling another much needed step towards First Language revitalisation in Australia. The evidence is clear an increase in the number of people and communities speaking these languages leads to a reinvigorated sense of community and identity and increased levels of cultural pride, self-esteem and empowerment. This in turn means better educational, employment and health outcomes for Indigenous communities across the nation. #firstlanguage #mothertongue #closethegap #literacyisfreedom

03.01.2022 Reading stories isn't just something we should do at bed time. Stories encourage creative thinking, imagination and can open children's minds. Stories help children to make sense of their world and experiences, and from a developmental perspective, enhance listening skills, memory and so much more.
03.01.2022 We are inspired by passionate parents and carers who work hard every day to improve the literacy outcomes for their children.
03.01.2022 That look of genuine confusion when you realise it's December tomorrow.
02.01.2022 Finally, it's Friday. Big grins as we head into the weekend!
02.01.2022 Who's read Rhino's Great Big Itch by Natalie Chivers? Rhino had an itch, a great big terrible itch, right in his ear. 'All you need is a little help ', suggests Bird. If Frog is too slimy, Monkey too silly and Lizard too prickly to help, who could possibly be left to help Rhino with his very big itch?
