25.01.2022 https://youtu.be/ZCAh4WbK20E Press Release 22 September 2020 Collaborative artwork on Peregian Beach calls on government to Fund Our Future Not Gas Last Thursday, 17 September, a group of Sunshine Coast-based artists created an artwork on North Peregian Beach. The message is for the federal government: Fund our future, not gas, and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to protect our lands and waters to thrive in the face of the changing climate.... The 20 meter-wide artwork, called The Eye of the Future, was created by Gabrielle Quakawoot, founder of The Art Of String Theory (based in Marcus Beach), Rose Feely of Eucalypt Roses (based in Wurtulla), and Karina Seljak (based in Coolum) and Sam Seljak of Seljak Brand and friends. The artwork was created with ancient sacred geometrical techniques, the mathematics of elemental and natural design. It was decorated with grounded banksia pods and pandanus seeds from the dunes of the beach. Alongside School Strike For Climate, AYCC, Seed Mob, and many other organisations and communities, the group of artists calls for no public funds for gas and other damaging fossil fuel projects. Instead, recovery funds should be spent on: 1. Resourcing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led solutions that guarantee land rights and care for country 2. Funding the creation of jobs that fast track solutions to the climate crisis and help communities recover 3. Projects that transition our economy and communities to 100% renewable energy by 2030, through expanded public ownership. The government is pushing for a gas-fired recovery even when energy businesses know it’s time to switch to renewables. Between increasing bushfires and heatwaves and the decimation of sacred sites, more people recognise we must switch to clean energy quickly and that our First Nations Peoples should be funded and supported to lead the solutions we need. This time last year millions of people across the globe and an estimated 300,000 in Australia rallied against our leaders' approach to the climate crisis. This year, COVID-safe actions will be shared on social media on the morning of Friday, 25 September to raise awareness about the opportunity for a fair transition to an abundant future. Australia has the wisdom, knowledge, creativity and technology. With caring, active people and a shared vision, we can make the change we need to see.
