23.01.2022 Today the Youth Coalition of the ACT joined a collective of service delivery, human rights, legal and representative organisations in the ACT to seek urgent action from the ACT Government to raise the minimum age of criminal responsibility in the ACT. These organisations strongly support raising the age from 10 to 14 years old, and keeping children out of prisons. As the peak body for young people in the ACT, the Youth Coalition is concerned about the damaging effects of incarceration on children and young people, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, and the potentially lifelong ramifications of early contact with the criminal legal system. http://youthcoalition.net/raise-the-age-open-letter.pdf

23.01.2022 Local Elections are often a confusing time. We’ve compiled a list of resources to help you out. Check it out here: https://www.youthcoalition.net/act-election-2020/

22.01.2022 More than 90% of Year 10 teachers don’t know the age of criminal responsibility in Australia

22.01.2022 "Young people and their parents may be experiencing conflict that is magnified by COVID-19 lockdown conditions, but a collaborative program run by Conflict Resolution Service (CRS), Youth Coalition of the ACT, Woden Community Service (WCS), Northside Community Service (NCS) and Marymead is reuniting parents and young people at risk of homelessness."

21.01.2022 ACT Minister for Children, Youth and Families Rachel Stephen-Smith has allocated $470,000 this financial year to the Safe and Connected Youth Program, on top of a $1 million commitment to build fit-for-purpose respite accommodation for young people under the age of 16. The Youth Coalition welcomes continued funding for the program. This early intervention program works with young people under the age of 16 and their families to improve parent-child relationships and family fu...nctioning, to reduce the risk of young people becoming homeless. working with these young people and their families has been incredibly rewarding watching them reconnect and strengthen their relationships with their family It’s the best feeling in the world. Knowing that a facility is being built for the program is such a relief. It will allow us to provide better support and know that we can continue to work with these families. https://www.youthcoalition.net/new-funding-to-reduce-homel/

21.01.2022 "We're disappointed by the lack of action ... but that shouldn't stop the ACT Government from leading on this issue. Every child deserves to be healthy and to reach their potential," she said.

19.01.2022 Today, we joined the ACT Greens and ACT Labor in their commitment to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14 years. #RaiseTheAge As the peak body for young people in the ACT, the Youth Coalition is concerned about the damaging effects of incarceration on children and young people, and the potentially lifelong ramifications of early contact with the criminal legal system. It is in everyone's best interests that we address the needs of these children, young peopl...e and families early through community-based supports and services. The Canberra community has a responsibility to help these young people thrive and grow, not add further disadvantage and struggle. See more

19.01.2022 ACT Community Sector congratulate Labor-Greens Government on their nation-leading commitment to #RaiseTheAge The Youth Coalition welcomes the ACT Government’s commitment to change the laws and raise the age of criminal responsibility. Supporting children and young people with crucial health, family and social services is essential to building healthy and strong communities. We congratulate the ACT Government on this historic step, and look forward to working with the ACT Government to ensure that no child under 14 finds themselves behind police or prison bars in our jurisdiction again.

19.01.2022 Youth mental health service Headspace says demand is causing waiting times to grow from one week to three in the ACT. Since the beginning of this year, demand h...as more than tripled roughly 1,000 sessions were held with clients between April and June. And it was driven by new young people seeking out Headspace, with a 318% lift in new clients. In a submission to an ACT parliamentary inquiry, Headspace suggests client numbers may quadruple by the end of the year.

18.01.2022 Today, the ACT’s youth, health, legal and community sector have re-issued the call for the ACT Government to #RaiseTheAge. The Youth Coalition strongly supports raising the Minimum Age of Criminal Responsibility (MACR) to at least 14 years in all circumstances. We believe that young people who enter the criminal justice system experience compounded forms of disavadvantage and should be supported, not criminalised. The ACT is ideally placed to enact this much needed change and lead the way.
