20.01.2022 Marea Gazzard, NSW . Whoa, thanks to all who participated in yesterdays #askacuratorday event! We were blown away by the questions, and the answers! If you missed the chat, were going to post them to our feed over the next few days as they all provided a great insight into the role of curators in a museum. ... The most popular question was around the career path to become a curator, so lets start with that... Our Senior Curator Shelley McSpedden said: Get involved! Volunteer at a local gallery, put on a show at a community space, Artist Run Initiative (ARI) or festival, apply for an internship at a museum, set up your own art space with some friends, write a review of a local exhibition that has rocked your world. The artworld is not one single entity, it has lots of different parts. Getting hands-on experience will help you understand the diverse types of art spaces and communities around, and the different roles you can play within them. Its also a great way to build up your skills, meet artists and other creatives you might want to work with in the future, make friends and have some fun. Immerse yourself in art and ideas. Visit lots of exhibitions (once you can, post-lockdown), read up on the artists that you love, take advantage of the plethora of podcasts and online interviews by artists, curators and art educators now available. Get to know artists in your local community. There are now a number of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Curatorial Studies at universities across Australia. These are worth considering if you know that you want to be a Curator as they offer the theorical grounding and industry knowledge youll need for the job. Most also facilitate an internship of some sort, which will help you gain that hands-on experience I keep harping on about. #askacurator #curator #museumjob #museumsandgalleries @pgav_victoria #artmuseum #careersinarts #australianart Image: Marea Gazzard, Torso 14, 1970.
