18.01.2022 Junior drops the C-bomb and F-bomb

17.01.2022 *************UPDATED************* The Briars wrapped up a 7th consecutive Club Championship on the weekend as the regular season drew to a close. This has been ...one of our finest achievements, at the end last season we lost 6 players from our 1st grade grand final team and a host of players across the grades so to back it up again this year has been remarkable! The final Club Championship table for the top 6 clubs looks like this; 1. Burwood Briars 1172 2. Auburn 1109 3. Warringah 1088 4. Georges River 1082 5. Epping 948 6. Mounties 936 We are also the only club to get all top 4 grades into the semi finals, something we have achieved every year for about the past 10 years. On top of that three of our four 5th grade teams also made the semis and of course our Under 24s were Grand Finalists last month. Congratulations to our Chairman Gerard Price, the committee, the captains and every player on another incredible season...so far...now for some Premierships! This weekend we have 7 teams playing Qualifying Semi Finals. 1st-4th grade play across Saturday and Sunday commencing at 1030am; *1st grade-Briars(4th) v Warringah(3rd) at Weldon Oval, Curl Curl *2nd grade-Briars(2nd) v Roseville(5th) at Rothwell Park, Concord *3rd grade-Briars(1st) v Strathfield(6th) at Ron Routley Oval, Concord *4th grade-Briars(2nd) v Epping(5th) at Grahame Thomas Oval, Bankstown(next to Bankstown Oval number 1) In 5th grade it’s the usual one day format (40 overs a side)commencing at 1215pm on either Saturday or Sunday; Tim Creer Cup A *Briars Brothers(3rd) v Mounties Black(4th) at St Lukes Oval, Concord on Sunday Tim Creer Cup B *Briars Gold(6th) v Balmain/Souths Eagles(1st) at Birchgrove Oval, Birchgrove on Sunday *Briars Rivals(3rd) v Macquarie Uni(4th) at St Lukes Oval, Concord on Saturday Well done again guys and we will see you at training at the Briars Nets on Wednesday.

14.01.2022 On Saturday at Moore Park 5 the 3rd Grade Sydney Winter Cricket Final will be played between Macquarie University Cricket Club and Brothers CC. Under the capta...incy of Prahlad Iyer Mac Uni have dominated the competition and will go into the final as firm favourites to win their first ever winter cricket competition. MUCC's bowling trio of Himanshu Warde (15 wickets at 9), Matthew Roper (13 wickets at 9) and Robin Atwal (12 wickets at 12) are guaranteed to provide 18 overs of aggressive and economical bowling. In their sights will be the competition's leading batter, Brothers' Shreyas Patel (387 runs at 97). Shrey has been super consistent and continues to post superbly crafted hundreds season after season. Although the stats suggest MUCC will have too much fire-power, Brothers' record in finals is formidable. Years of playing together mean that their trust in each other and ability to focus in pressure situations is second to none. Skipper Asita Galappatti will have his strategies worked out on how to unsettle a MUCC side going into unfamiliar territory. Asita will know that Brothers' best chance of posting a competitive total will be for the top order batting of himself, big game match winner Toby Warnes and Shrey to neutralise the effectiveness of Warde, Roper and Atwal. If this is managed Brothers' band of lower order hitters may be able to cash in on the small Moore Park oval. The dynamic Oshada Wijesinghe has been in fine form this year and presents as a key player for the late overs. On the bowling side Brothers have been led by the incisive Jay Patel (8 wickets at 11) and Vidyuth Bararwaj (8 wickets at 20). Asita will also be looking for impact from his other medium pacers including Toby and VP, while looking for the right opportunity to deploy his quality spinners Jeet Parikh & Shrey. For MUCC the goal will be to apply what looks to be a superior skill set in a pressure situation against experienced and well prepared opponents. MUCC's batting has been a powerhouse in the round games and semi final, with Himanshu's 105 in round 7 at Moore Park being a highlight. Keeping wickets in hand is always important at Moore Park and getting a few retired not outs allows a late over launch. The support bowlers Karan Tiwari and Prahlad will need to maintain the pressure that Warde, Roper & Atwal are sure to apply. Expect big things if Ashwin Premkumar gets on a roll. For supporters of both clubs the game starts at 10.30. I'm sure both skippers will ensure that the match is hard fought and played in good spirit. Aalok Galappatti may well be on hand to take excellent photos and Andy Coey may well reminisce about his Brothers' century a couple seasons ago. Having played a combined 50 seasons of summer and winter cricket with these two clubs I'll wish both teams well and take a keen interest from afar. http://www.smca.nsw.cricket.com.au///public/rv/match.aspx

04.01.2022 If/when Smith loses the captaincy, it does set up a hell of a redemption story in the long run. Fast forward to 2028. Smith, nearing 40, has been facing rumours... about retirement. He's the elder statesman of the batting unit. He can't take part in leadership roles, but can still score truckloads of runs. He's closing in on 20k Test runs. Australia are on tour. Their captain Alex Carey has just emotionally quit after an embarrassing defeat in the 1st Test of an overseas tour, after a string of bad losses and mounting pressure. He was the 7th captain to be tried after infamous 2018 series in South Africa. Some ask for their most successful captain, Adam Zampa, to be reinstated, given his undefeated record in his solitary two Tests ever played (both as captain), two rain affected draws vs Sri Lanka. However, public opinion has finally shifted. Smith is talked about as taking up the role after years staying out of the limelight. He's a born again Christian, a tutor of underprivileged kids at the Cameron Burge School of Kids Who Can't Cricket Good and Want To Do Good At Other Sports, Redfern. He's teetotal and writes a weekly column about gardening and DIY. In Australia's hour of need, in a foreign land, he's the man they need, though not the one they deserve. He reluctantly takes up the captaincy, much to the disappointment of spinner-turned-opener, Ashton Turner, the other elder statesman in the side. With 100 runs to reach 20,000 runs, Smith gets a disappointing duck in his first dig as Australia end up 100 runs behind. After an inspirational talk from Shane Warne's digital avatar, Smith bowls himself and picks up 8fer, then plays an inspirational rearguard with Australia's number 11, Brad Hogg Jnr in just his 3rd game (and Australia's first spinner to play more than 2 Tests since Lyon's retirement). As Smith hits the winnings runs, and coincidentally, brings up his 100 and 20k runs, tears run down his cheeks as he waves his 25kg Burger McKentucky Fried King bat to the crowd, as the disgrace and shame of the South Africa series is forgiven by the Australian public at large.Tears roll down Davey Warner's cheeks, too, as he watches at home on his 300" B-LED TV (made from the eyes of bees for highest resolution possible). Warner looks over at a faded photo of Darren Lehmann stuck to his wall with yellow tape and mutters "we did it, Boof, we did it. Rest in peace." Australia celebrate their first away win in 5 years, drawing the series, and their first ever win over Afghanistan, which brings them to #17 in the ICC Test Rankings. credits: NZTailender on cricketweb.net
