22.01.2022 Official statement: We are really surprised to be in the news right now regarding the name change of The Captain Cook Hotel. The hotel remains The Captain Cook Hotel, with all original signage as well as the statue atop the roof which is currently being restored to its former glory. ... We took over the business in January 2020, and the decision to rebrand the food and beverage operation as The Captain was a collaborative one with absolutely no motivation drawn from the political discussion surrounding the subject. We assumed that people would still associate The Captain with Captain Cook. We were simply keen to refresh this space with a new catch phrase as the new owners.
