20.01.2022 Caterpillars are rife at this time of year especially on grapevines. Spray with Bacillus thuringiensis (sold as Dipel) or you could make your own soap spray. There are many variations of homemade soap sprays suitable for treating caterpillars so experiment in your own garden by adding vinegar, some hot chilli (like Carolina Reaper) and even garlic! #diggersclub... #caterpillars #gardencare #pestcontrol See more

16.01.2022 The weird and wonderful new plants documented by Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and collaborators in 2020... ‘It is a race against time to find, identify, name and conserve plants before they disappear’.

14.01.2022 Popular as an addition to sparkling wine and cocktails, Rosella, also known as Native Hibiscus Flowers, are so much more than a novelty decoration they can also be made into jam, are high in vitamin C and antioxidants and are a useful tall garden shrub suitable for hedging in areas of full sun. Originally introduced to Australia from West Africa, most consider Rosella a Native Food nowadays due to its presence on this continent for hundreds of years, and natural distributio...n across the northern climates. Growing up to 2m, plants can be kept smaller with pruning, although this will reduce flower production. Flowering throughout autumn, flowers should be harvested when petals have fallen away and the red calyx reach around 3cm. Harvest individual flowers and preserve by poaching in a sugary syrup. These can then be used straight away or stored in an airtight container as you would preserved peaches or apricots. 10.01.2022 Meet a beautiful bulb from Southern Africa’s Amaryllidaceae family Nerines. Genus ‘Nerine’, first published in 1820 by botanist William Herbert, is a reference from Greek mythology to the sea nymphs ‘Nereids’. These beauties produce six wavy petals that feature recurved tips and pronounced stigma that push upwards similar to that of many lilies. The petals have an iridescent shine that give the flowers a jewel-like quality and provide a perfect burst of colour that makes ...them a great addition to any garden. Nerines are autumn flowering bulbs, so they put on a show when little else is in full bloom and most flowers have retreated. They can be planted in pots, where they can be moved and positioned around the garden as a feature, or alternatively can be planted within a well-draining dry garden. Follow this link to check out our range of Nerines and more: https://www.diggers.com.au/shop/autumn-flowering-bulbs/ #diggersclub #flowergarden #growflowers #growyourown #sharegardenjoy

04.01.2022 Variegated Applemint is a highly decorative ornamental edible plant. Unlike a lot of other variegations producing yellow foliage, it has a beautiful white variegation on its rounded leaves. This herb has a much milder flavour than most mints, making it the perfect subtle addition to your fruit salads and summer drinks. Giving reference to its name, the Variegated Applemint has a beautiful soft and fruity fragrance. It is easy to grow and quite hardy. Whilst it can grow in sha...dy conditions, we recommend growing in full sun, as this is where the best variegation occurs.
