24.01.2022 Friday reflection! The below chapter is taken from my e book Emancipating the Leader Within- Fearless Leadership in Early Childhood' This is a book for every single educator! ... Reflecting on leadership There will always be challenges in a leadership role. Its par for the course! / Its part of the deal! Different leaders navigate those challenges differently, but they tend to have one thing in common... A strong leader is authentic A powerful leader is authentic A true leader is authentic Think of a leader that inspires you. I bet your bottom dollar you can think of many people who call themselves leaders but are not authentic. They are just saying things to woo their audiences, or win votes etc. If you want to be a successful leader and build a community of leaders, you need to be authentic. So, what does authenticity look like in everyday practice? It has a lot to do with intention. If your intention as a leader is to dictate to people - this is where you need to stop reading. This book is not for you. If your intention is to create more leaders then please read on. It takes time (and courage!) to become a great leader A competent leader does not evolve overnight. It takes time to develop the strong leadership skills that will make you competent and confident enough to execute your role well. Courage leads to practice, which leads to competence, which leads to confidence and willingness to try - its a virtuous cycle! Leadership skills are not something that you can just pick up on the fly. They need to be practiced and actively cultivated. As someone who trains leaders, I often notice there is one big thing that stands in the way of this process. Fear! If you cant get past the fear or doubt you may feel about stepping into the role of being a good leader, you will not be a good leader. Try not to worry about the possible feedback you might receive if you take on new challenges as a leader. January 2021 is almost booked out- contact me today to secure your visit Over the last few months, I have been visiting centres all over NSW, to assist them with preparing for their upcoming Assessment & Rating visits. If you are looking for extra support and guidance, this visit can assist your centre. The visit entails * A six hour visit . During these six hours, I will observe the educators in their roles and make recommendations. There is an opportunity to sit down with the NS, EL & Approved provider, to look through documents, and reflect on current practices and ensure they are embedded practices. * I will give reccomendations if I feel that a practice could be achieved with a different perspective. 16.01.2022 A couple on months ago, Jill Heaton called me to say that she had nominated me for Rotary Inspirational Women’s Awards (RIWA) for inspirational women in the community. They had a record number of nominations this year and were in awe of how many amazing women there are making an impact on others. I didn't become a finalist as they focused on Health workers this year (and so they should! ). ... I was so surprised and humbled. I didn't know this award existed, and secondly, that someone took the time to nominate me, made me teary even more. The older I get, the more I know the positive impact I am making in people a lives, an amazing lady called me a "positive contagion" last week and I beamed from ear to ear. I know I have one shot at this life to make the best difference peoples lives, and I get to do that in my business and personal life. I will continue to be the best version of myself, as I have big plans to keep impacting people's lives in 2021 and beyond. 12.01.2022 Thursday reflection.... As a leader, there are times you feel compelled to do everything right? Remember that guilty feeling that you have when you would think of asking another staff member to do something, you might be thinking Oh no I couldnt ask them to do that, that is actually just causing more detriment to yourself.... Reasons that you want to do things yourself can be; You are quicker at completing the task You get frustrated if it is not done a certain way You feel guilty asking people for help You like to control everything You dont know how to ask for help You feel obligated You know that it wont be done properly, so you may as well do it yourself in the first place. Do any of this points strike a chord with you? Have you been guilty of thinking one or all of them at some point? Dont worry, I sure have. When I started as a Nominated Supervisor, I FELT that is was my responsibility to do all the tasks, and guess what started to happen.. I started to burn out. How did I know well I experienced the symptoms; Tired Short tempered No ability to be mindful Losing my temper Not using my active listening skills Pretending I was busy so I wouldnt have to talk to people UH-OH! What was happening! I was becoming the person I didnt want to be so I engaged in some serious reflecting, and I decided to delegate. That was such a great decision, in my frenzy to do everything, I had noticed that I had started to make my team feel incompetent at their jobs! Wow, that was never my intention, but looked what happened when I got caught up in doing it all. I implemented changes immediately. I had a conversation with my team about what they wanted to do. Here I was thinking I had to do it all, when in hindsight I was the one who was not making any progress happen. Do it, delegate! Have a conversation with your team, and take the burden off yourself.

05.01.2022 We read all the time about acts of kindness costing nothing. Sometimes kindness does cost a few dollars ! #kindness can be in the form of buying a colleague cup of coffee on the way to work and leaving it in the staff room for them.... Another act of kindness could be picking up some supplies on the way to work or from work because the Nominated supervisor or the director doesn't have any time to go to the shop and you bring the receipt and getting reimbursed the next day. Kindness can also be covering people's shift at last minute. An act of unpaid act of kindness could be helping out a colleague when you see them struggling with a child that's been crying for a while and you take over that's also a really good sign of team connection. Another act of kindness could be if you see something in the sink that needs to be washed up and you just do it and you don't say anything ! because you know that the person was really busy and was required to go back on the floor straight away or in the case of an emergency. Sometimes we get so tied up on the little things that we forget to see the bigger picture, which is when we work in early childhood education it is really important that we work within a team. As cliche as it sounds there is no I in team and we need to be able to rely on each other . So today; think of an act of kindness that you can do for a team member- just because you can. We all the ability to make conscious choices- although we act out of habit, or in line with the views of the crowd. 02.01.2022 Monday motivation! What happens when we are disconnected from our values? During my mentoring sessions I discuss with educators about values- but more importantly, their own values.... What are your core values in life? Honesty? Integrity? Reliability? Compassion? Forgiveness? We all have vales that pertain our existence. We build our relationships, especially our adulthood encompassing these values. They drive our decisions and most of the times, find yourself working in a place where these values are also encompassed. However, there are times we are tested, circumstances change, people change, challenges arise, and at times you distance yourself from your core values- even if it is involuntarily. An example is honesty. Imagine this, your core value is honesty. You are honest in your work ethic, honest with your colleagues, honest with the information that you communicate with your staff members. Then a new staff member joins the team. You soon realise they don't have the values you do, they start their shift late, dodge families, not be part of the team, make excuses if there is an incident, and you find yourself covering their mistskes. Does this sound familiar? But what is happening on a deeper level? You are causing yourself distrust! because you are now not working within your core values. This will cause a lot of hurt to yourself. The one thing you truly value your are not upholding. Your first opportunity to rectify this is to identify that you have slipped through the cracks. You are now feeling raw, and not sure what to do. This is a perfect opportunity for you to critically reflect. The opportunity to look at this from a different perspective and figure out how to make changes. Questions to guide you are; *do you feel conflicted? *did you stop working honestly because you felt bullied? *did you stop working honestly because you were covering a mistake for your colleague? *did you want to 'fit in'? Make a decision to go back to your values! Make a stand, and have a conversation with your colleagues. It's about open communication and part of continuous improvement. I encourage you all to take this article to your team and make it a discussion point at your next staff meeting or in a memo. Use the Code of Ethics to guide this discussion. Emotional intelligence is required for a successful team. When this is present between staff members it will create a strong team as people respect each other's diverse perspective rather than judge and criticise. So, this week, encourage your team to be the best they can be and see the good in everything! If someone starts complaining, change their course of thinking to "but how lucky are we to have ....."
