22.01.2022 We’ve got lots of beautiful scarves up online, including this stunning blue design, featuring the artwork of Indigenous artist, Daphne Napurrula Marks. About the Artwork This painting shows the Yalka Dreaming (bush onion), which is situated in a place called Analy, close to Town Bore Outstation. Bush onions grow after the rain and are collected by all the women. The yalka are found underneath the surface and can be eaten raw or cooked in the hot sand next to the campfire. Paintings referring to this Dreaming show diverse motifs such as plants, leaves, seeds, layers or roots.

20.01.2022 A friend once shared what she called the Parable of the Choir: A choir can sing a beautiful note impossibly long because singers can individually drop out to breathe as necessary and the note goes on. Social justice activism should be like that, she said. That’s stuck with me.... - Paul Matisz Photo from Pinterest.

11.01.2022 Indigenous artists receive royalties for every sale from our Indigenous art range. But do you ever wonder how royalties actually work? Read on to learn more. . How do royalties work? Royalties are calculated as a percentage of the total sales for each artist's design. We cannot publish the actual figure paid to artists because they have confidential license contracts with the artists, as is the norm with all contracts between any two parties. However the royalties paid are ...above average for the industry. . Artists receive the royalty payments monthly. On the alternate fortnight of each month the artists receive payment for paintings. The alternation of royalty and painting payments gives the artists a fortnightly income. . OTHER THINGS TO NOTE It is common for artists to receive more income from their royalties than for the sale of their original artworks Artists are able to nominate family members to receive their royalties after they pass away, enabling their family to have an ongoing income Artists are able to receive an advance on royalties for travelling to visit family, buying a car, food and other necessities. The advance is repaid in small, steady amounts from incoming royalty payments Better World Arts are members of the Indigenous Art Code, which ensures fair & ethical trade in Artwork, transparency in the process of the sale & promotion of artwork, and that disputes under the Code are dealt with efficiently and fairly. . @samanthaelizabethphotography . . . #naidoc #naidocweek #indigenousart #firstnationsaustralia #fairtrade #smallbusinessmelbourne #smallbusinessaustralia #supportindigenousartists #ethicalbusiness #ethicalblogger #ecoblogger #ethicalhomewares See more

07.01.2022 The people behind the products meet Antonia and Tomás, who make beautiful wool tote bags in Mexico. Antonia and Tomás live and work in a family compound along with Tomas’ parents and the families of two of his brothers. Life here centers on the extended family, and they very much value the support that this offers. Antonia started out dyeing yarn for her other family members to weave and then more recently stepped up to design as well, with Tomás working by her side. Typica...lly Antonia initiates the design process, Tomás weaves the samples; they tag-team the entire process like that, until the product is tagged and shipped! When he completes a step, I take up the next one and so on. We share everything, including work, caring for the children and the house, said Antonia. The popularity of her bags and the money she earns from them directly correlates to the well being of her family, in particular the ability for her three children to further their education. Although Antonia only completed junior high, and Tomás high school, their eldest is now studying engineering at a university in Oaxaca City. Their younger daughter is attending high school with the help of a hearing aid, and her five-year-old boy goes to the local elementary school. I used to say, ‘Oh, I need a job, because my oldest daughter is going to go to the University. But I thought where am I going to get a job so that she can go to college? And this job with MZ is an opportunity to have more continuous work, she shared.
